“This hotel was the best and Cilla was fantastic.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2009

The Sugarapple on Bequai at Friendship Beach is a fantastic place to stay. My wife and I arrived at the hotel via taxi from Port Elizabeth and we knew right from the start that this would be a great place. We were greeted by Cilla, the manger, and she made us feel right at home. The hotel has 8 suites, a pool, wonderful gardens and grounds, a large deck with swing chairs, b-b-que, table and chairs. Our suite was #6 and we had a clear view of Friendship Bay and the off-shore islands. The suite itself has a larger bedroom with ample space, a large bathroom and shower and a dining/kitchen area with table, chairs and love seat. The rising sun would flood our breakfast nook and we never got use to the vistas. The staff at Sugarapple was always pleasant and always had a nice greeting greeting for you. The other important feature of Sugarapple was the other guests who were pleasant and often shared information on their excursions and experiences.

We had an easy 5 minute walk to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. There are two bars/resturants on the beach so there was always something to enjoy. Port Elizabeth is about a 30 minute walk or take the local mini-buses (1 EC/person), or a taxi for 20 EC. We usually walked to Port Elizabeth each morning to take in the harbour activities and to pick up fresh produce at the local markets. After two weeks we started to feel like locals and would be able to recognize the vendors and mini-bus drivers.

We will return to Bequai and most importantly to Sugarapple.

In view of the superlative reviews on TripAdvisor, mine is probably redundant, but my friend and I had such a perfect 4 night stay on Bequia (after touring St. Lucia, Grenada and Carriacou) that I had to add my voice to the chorus. It is rare to find such a perfect combination of place and accommodation. I have nothing negative to say about anything, other than a regret that we did not have longer. Cilla told my friend on our last day that she would be back. I know I will be back to both the Sugarapple and to Bequia. My friend is already planning her next trip there. I can only say that after many travels and seeing many islands, I have found a true island paradise in Bequia and can think of no better place to experience it than at the Sugarapple.

We have stayed in hotels all over the world, including many in the Caribbean, and the Sugarapple is one of the hotels that captures the feel of the place in a charming and tasteful manner. Our room included a king-size four-poster bed with mosquito netting and flat screen t.v., safe, nice Caribbean style furnishings and a separate, large kitchen and dining area with shutters that could be opened to provide wonderful views. The kitchen was great since the inn does not do breakfast. We bought bread, cereal, coffee, etc. and had breakfast in our dining area--trust me, you will want to do this after you see how neat it is. If you want someone to cook you breakfast, just walk to the hotel next door.

The bedroom part of the room could be closed up at night an air conditoned for comfort and for those light sleepers who might be awakened by roosters crowing and other sounds of this beautiful island--this is a real island and not an overdeveloped tourist trap. As a light sleeper, the only noise I would hear would be each morning would be the horn from a car that passed by at about 6AM--the driver of this vehicle we have named "alarm clock Charlie" because passed by at the same time every morning and seemd to beep his horn on every curve of the road to tell other drivers that he was coming. I did not mind because there is nothing like walking into your kitchen and dining area as the sun rises and flinging open the shutters to reveal another new morning. Cilla ( who is the manager ) is great as are the rest of the staff.

The inn is not right on the beach but you can walk there in three to five minutes depending on your speed. I would recommend seeing the other beaches on the island such as Lower Bay, Princess Margaret, Industry, and Spring. It is cheaper to take a taxi rather than a car each day to a different beach and then have them pick you up--the same goes for going out to dinner each night . Get yourself to this inn as soon as you can because you will not be able to get in once it is discovered by the travel press/media. If you can get room number one, snag it since it is a corner room with great views. If you cannot come anyway--this is a great place to stay and the price is so reasonable. Do not be put off by the reasonable price. On St. Barts, you would pay three or four time this rate and maybe get less. My five star rating takes into account the value ,authenticity, and beauty of the accomodations and grounds. If you desire the Four Seasons, do not come here. If you desire a charming, romantic inn with true Caribbean character, this place is for you.

The Sugar Apple is truly a place that will stay in your heart forever. Nestled upon the side of a hill overlooking Friendship Bay, it is truly a gem. We first discovered the Sugar Apple in December 2007. Once we decided to return to Bequia this year for our wedding, we were destined to stay at the Sugar Apple again, and this time we shared the experience with 10 family members. The establishment is perfect for either a quiet romantic getaway or a family retreat. With 8 delightful self-contained, and nicely furnished rooms, it is truly a relaxing place to kick your heals up, and catch up on some much needed fun and sun. Each room has a view of the ocean, and positioning that welcomes the cross breezes. This also keeps the creepy crawlers and mosquitoes to a bare minimum. Out-side there is a large swimming pool and covered BBQ area. Here we held our post-wedding reception. It is both comfortable and accommodative for a private candlelit dinner, and a family celebration.
The staff of the Sugar Apple are just one of the many fantastic aspects of the Bequia experience. Cilla is truly one of the kindest people that we have ever met. She is always willing to chat about the island, excursions to experience, and the Bequia way of life. Each day she would wave hello as we ventured out for the day, and wish us well. When we returned our rooms would be spotless with a few beautiful flower petals to greet us on our pillows. We were issued a cell phone which we charged up with 10EC. This made it very simple to arrange a taxi, schedule dinner reservations, and track down the family members.
When planning our wedding trip, Cilla was fantastic in assisting with the lodging details. She helped me organize varying scheduled arrivals and departures for each of our 12 visitors. She was more than helpful with organizing multiple dinner gatherings and our reception celebration. One day we were even able to get fresh fish caught by a local fisherman. Cilla arranged pick-up and delivery for the day of the dinner.
Having experience the Sugar Apple both with a group and as a romantic getaway, we can safely say that the Sugar Apple has it all. The grounds are very appealing and relaxing. The pool is very spacious and clean. The rooms are cute, and accommodative; we always had what we needed in the kitchen!
Bequia is truly a beautiful island, but the people are what make it a priceless experience. We would highly recommend anyone visiting Beqiua to spend a little bit of time in friendship Bay at the Sugar Apple. It will be an experience you will treasure for the rest of your lives.

Very simply, we had a great time at Sugarapple Inn - Cilla and the staff were very friendly and helpful, the accomodation was comfortable, clean and spacious, the outdoor areas and pool ideal for relaxing and enjoying the surroundings of the lovely garden that the Inn is set in.

Although we visited a number of other beaches during our stay, Friendship Bay remained our favourite and is only a few mins walk from the Inn. Although it is located a little way out of Port Elizabeth, transport was easily found - and some fellow guests even walked into town!

All in all a lovely setting, a warm welcome, and we want to go back... soon!

The Sugarapple Inn provided a delightful getaway for our family. Bequia is a beautiful island, a rustic Caribbean gem. Our accommodation at the Sugarapple Inn was spacious, well kept, and extremely comfortable. The staff was fantastic and very sweet, especially with our 2-year-old daughter. The hotel is situated a short walk away from, in our opinion, the most spectacular beach on the island, Friendship Bay. We enjoyed many days of beach combing and relaxation. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a ‘real’ getaway – a place where we will return.

We just returned on Sunday from a wonderful trip to Grenada and Bequia. We chose the Sugarapple as our home for four nights while in Bequia. We have visited Bequia by boat before, but never spent any more than one day at a time on the island.

The Sugarapple Inn is a darling small hotel that is always highly rated in Trip Advisor. They are in the Friendship area, and you can walk to the beautiful beach in about 3-5 minutes time. Being Sunday, the wonderful Cilla (that I had heard so many good things about) was on her day off and the main housekeeper, Yvonne, met us. She checked us into our room, gave us a cell phone to use during our stay, and oriented us to the hotel and Bequia.

Our room was very cute – the bedroom area was air conditioned; king bed had a mosquito net; and there were fresh flowers on the bed, and tucked into the towels in the bathroom. At the far end of the room were French doors that opened onto a semi-outdoor kitchen/living area. The eight “windows” in that area were really large white shutter windows that you completely open – what a gorgeous view! It truly brought the outdoors right inside (as well as those refreshing tradewinds). The room was extremely comfortable, and the bedroom a/c was very cold…we used the a/c at night. The hotel has a nice deck area complete with BBQ to use, and a very nice pool area as well - quite refreshing at the end of a warm day. The property even came with a mama cat and 2 very cuddly kittens to snuggle and play with.

If you are expecting a large resort, complete with luxury amenities; bar; restaurant, etc. - Sugarapple isn't for you. These are truly self-catering apartments with many nice touches you won't get at hotel, at a very reasonable price.. (ie: fresh mangos were given to us as they had just been picked; cell phones pre-programed with a variety of numbers that we would possibly need; the most friendly service from staff - you could tell they truly cared and were part of a family) Large resorts are walking distance however, and we did take advantage of bar/restaurant facilities at a neighboring hotel - easy 2 minute walk away.

We loved Bequia, and the Sugarapple Inn and will absolutely be back! (Hopefully sooner than later!)

  • Liked — The beautiful view; the room; the friendliness of staff
  • Disliked — Low season - many things closed down
