Prior to my trip to Croatia in May, I stumbled upon a blog post raving about the wonderful food at Agroturizam Toncic and the kind family who owns it. That could not be more true. Although it is difficult to get to (especially without GPS!), it is extremely well worth the journey through the hills of Istria. I don't normally write TripAdvisor reviews, however I had to for this place. It was one of the highlights of our vacation, and I would HIGHLY recommend a visit here to anyone who comes to Istria (you'd be silly not to!). It is the perfect example of true Istrian cuisine and culture.
A small farmhouse restaurant, Agroturizam Toncic is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. That is when they cook their harvests from their farm from the week. The food is insanely delicious--all fresh and homemade.
We arrived around 5pm on a Sunday, to find ourselves the only non-family diners at the restaurant (at the time there was a big First Communion party going on inside). The owner and his wife were so welcoming, and they sat us at a beautiful table outside where we overlooked the farm and the cute town of Oprtalj. There is no menu, but instead the owner brings out course after course of delicious meals--scrambled farm-eggs with asparagus and shaved truffle, meat and cheese plates, fresh bread, handmade pasta with prosciutto, truffle, and veal ragu, ravioli with homemade pesto, gnocchi with braised short rib, etc. This is all complimented by incredible house wine, carafes of both white and red to compliment the meal. We finished the meal with pastries, cappuccinos, and honey grappa, and spent time talking with the owner and his family, visiting his aging room where he prepares his prosciutto and other meats, and playing games with his sweet children. It was the perfect end to a beautiful day in the Istrian hills!
Again, I can't recommend Agroturizam Toncic enough. A must-do when in Istria!
