“Wonderful relaxing holiday!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Recently returned from a 10 day stay at Reefview in the penthouse apartment and would thoroughly recommend it over a typical "hotel" holiday.

Pros - apartment was really good, well equipped and comfortable with everything we needed. Nick & Karroll were very knowledgeable and helpful and gave us some good tips even though we'd stayed on the island before. Really nice to sit outside and have a leisurely breakfast on the verandah.

Cons - only thing to be aware of that you are a drive away from most restaurants/bars/beaches so a car is an essential!

We recently chartered a boat with Captain Nick from Reefview apartments to go snorkeling at Cades Reef in Antigua. We were 3 adults and 3 kids (ages 3, y and 9) and we felt very comfortable on the 18' Boston Whaler. Captain Nick met us at Jolly Harbor and was all smiles from the minute we met until we said good bye four and a half hours later.

It was our first time in Antigua and our 8th day there when we went snorkeling with Captain Nick and he was a wealth of information about the island, having lived there for 14+ years (if I recall correctly). He was super with the kids and they immediately took to him. We reached the reef in no time and at that point discovered that we had forgotten our 3-year old son's snorkeling gear in the hotel! Since he's so young, it was a challenge to find him the right size mask before we went on vacation, so we were very disappointed. Not to worry, Captain Nick had exactly what we needed and produced a tiny mask and snorkel that fit our son perfectly as well as cool yellow flippers for him!

We set off from the boat after Captain Nick had cleaned all our masks and headed for the reef in somewhat choppy water. He guided us through the beautiful coral and colorful boulders and he pointed out some of the wonderful reef inhabitants. The water was warm and visibility was perfect. On our way back to the Boat we saw a nurse shark that was trying to hide from us as well as a reef shark in the distance. Since the kids weren't very used to snorkeling yet they got tired swimming against the current and Captain Nick grabbed the two older ones, while I carried our 3-year old on my back.

Next we dropped anchor in Carlisle Bay and did some less strenuous snorkeling in much calmer water. Captain Nick let me borrow his super awesome and super long free-diving flippers (since my scuba-diving flippers were starting to hurt my little toe that I had broken at the beach the night before - but that's a different story) while he swam around without flippers even quicker than I! We saw several star fish, a trunk fish, tiny squids, tiny flounders (or some kind of sand-colored flat fish), hermit crabs and many other colorful fish.

On the way back, Captain Nick served up delicious home-made rum punch and gave us a short tour of some of the beaches along the way back to Jolly Harbor. He recommended a local reasonably-priced restaurant (which we never got a chance to try) and talked a bit about some of the history of the local area. The kids loved the excitement of the boat jumping over waves and speeding along the coast.

Before I had booked this trip with Captain Nick I had researched many of the snorkeling charters in Antigua. Many of the ones I found combined several snorkeling stops, with beach stops and lunch into a full day adventure. While that might be fun as a couple or with your teenagers, with younger children and their grandmother, Captain Nick's small boat, short charter and super friendly one-on-one attention was just what we needed. If we're ever in Antigua again we will most definitely charter Captain Nick again for our snorkeling and maybe even fishing adventures.

We had a great weeks holiday with Nick and Karroll - who'd have believed we could have had a whole week without the classic "I'm bored". Karroll was a single mum herself and knows about the challenges of teenagers and gave us some great recommendations for things to do such as stingray city (which she booked for us) and we went out with them on the boat snorkelling with both kids seeing turtles, eagle rays and other beautiful fish. Karroll dived for shells which were great souvenirs for kids to take back home. Nick is qualified instructor and let both kids drive the boat back which was a huge thrill for them!!

We really got to know the real Antigua by hiring a car and exploring - again Karroll organised so efficiently!.

She also had an eye on mum - and invited me to her yoga classes at Sugar Club which was a great relaxation and kids were able to use the pool.

We stayed in the cottage which is well equipped - only challenges were toilet straight off the kitchen separated by the shower curtain which was a bit public(!), and shower outside which is romantic but in the post rain season a haven for mosquitos. We did all get bitten alot but again Karroll was there with bug spray (which we forgot to bring!)

Oh yes and the kids LOVED the two dogs, two cats and parrot - they are all totaly kid friendly and happy to play.

If like our friends who stayed at Sandals the same week, you are delighted to never leave the resort, this is not for you. But if you want to have a great weeks experience and fun - then there is no other choice!

I will be back - maybe on a more romantic break next time!!

Room Tip: The beach house is more quirkly and fun - but the stairs are v steep so watch out if you have any mo...

We had an amazing holiday in Antigua staying at the Reefview apartments in Cades Bay, run by Nick and Karoll Williams. We stayed in the 2 storey wooden cottage which is so cute and has views of the sea from the bed!! It has loads of fantastic features including a wonderful totally tropical outdoor shower which is a really cool experience in itself and a gorgeous little courtyard garden complete with BBQ, table and chairs and beautiful flowers and humming birds.

My boyfriend had arranged an amazing surprise sailing trip with fantastic help from Karoll and Nick prior to our arrival. Karoll even supplied toothbrushes to help my boyfriend keep it a complete surprise!! We spent 3 days circumnavigating the island calling at beautiful bays and tiny islands on the way.

Our days on the island were filled with trips to beautiful beaches and there were so many to choose from , all accessible on the local bus which runs from just up the road and it a fun experience in itself.

Food on the island was wonderful starting with Nick and Karoll's delicious welcome BBQ
of fresh fish washed down with Karroll's very own Carribean rum punch - yum! There were so many places to choose from including Chappy's , a nearby local bar/cafe serving great Carribean cuisine in a friendly local atmosphere, fish and chips in the 'London bus' along the road and the odd treat at one of the fancier restaurants like Sheer Rocks where you must have the tuna cerviche- sensational food not to mention the location!

We had a couple of more active days with a trip to bustling St John's (make sure to visit the museum which is simple but so informative in the history of the island) and a day trip to English Harbour where we did some great hikes on the headlands recommended by Nick including up to Shirley Heights where the views at sunset were spectacular.

One of the real highlights of the holiday was a snorkelling trip on Nick and Karoll's boat Little Mermaid. Their knowledge of the local reef meant that we were taken to the best spots for some of the most amazing snorkelling I have ever experienced - turtles, nurse sharks, barracudas and huge shoals of tropical fish - amazing!

A truly fantastic holiday we'll definitely be back!

So, I couldn't resist the lure of another holiday to Antigua, & having had such a great time last time felt I had to return to Reefview... We stayed in the very romantic cottage apartment, which was built by Nick's own hands, which was lovely. The sea breeze kept the apartment cool at night, & we were woken up to a beautiful view over the reef in the mornings. We even manger to cook up a couple of feasts from the so well designed galley kitchen, & the outdoor shower...well...brilliant!!

Aside from that, we certainly weren't disappointed by the island's surprises...and a new fish to stalk...Tarpon. I'd never fly fished before, but Nick was a great teacher (with fortunately a lot of much needed patience!). It meant a few early morning starts, but once I'd 'mastered' the art of the rod, which was almost straight away under nick's guidance, I experienced a side of Antigua that I'd never seen before. I'm never normally a pre-sunrise person, but the tranquility of the waters, stalking the rising fish was awesome...and then to finally hook one, play it, and land it was fantastic. And then another, and another... I even managed to persuade Nick to go for a sunset session, before a beer on the beach-another world that in still dreaming of!

Apart from that, we had a lovely day out in Little Mermaid again, did some amazing snorkelling off Cades Reef, seeing loads of beautifully coloured fish, several turtles, nurse sharks and even an eagle ray. I don't know if Nick has some way of communicating with the sealife, but they certainly seemed to turn up as asked for! We took their kayaks out one day down to the empty beaches at Curtain Bluff and Carlisle Bay-it was hard work, but well worth the trip and yet another way to see Antigua (although not quite the quantity of wildlife nick managed to conjure up).

We had a few days at the beaches which were stunning-the beauty of not staying in a resort was the freedom to come and go wherever we wanted. In fact the one disappointing trip to the beach was at the beach at Jolly Harbour. All we wanted was a quiet drink at Castaways, and the staff were great, but we were persistently harassed by people touting boat trips & selling 'charity' CDs! It was straight back to the tranquility and seclusion of Reefview for us! However one place not to miss, is a trip to Chappy's for lunch/dinner at Erling's Harbour-lovely local food, at local prices, in a local surrounding... and only a 5 minute stroll from Reefview.

So all in all, another awesome holiday at the hands of the second-to-none hospitality of Nick and Karoll (my memories of the welcome fish BBQ with obligatory rum punch are making me hungry right now!!). It may have been 'Hurricane season', but we had amazing weather, with no hint of trouble. It's a risk to take going then apparently, but the payback is absolutely no one else around, and deserted, beautiful beaches & seas. If you're thinking of doing it, go for it, and see a different side to the all inclusive resorts, and seek out the gems the Reefview posse has to offer-if you don't tap them for the invaluable local knowledge they have, you WILL miss out!!

Enjoy!!!

Room Tip: They're all great, all have their own character.

We have just returned from a fantastic 2 week stay with Nick and Karroll in their sea view apartment. We did not want to stay in a built up resort as we wanted to be able to experience the "real Antigua" and you could not have asked for more from this couple who were always there to offer advice and knowledge about the local area.

You must, must, must book the snorkelling trip with them as we saw some of the most amazing sea life from conger eels, stingray, starfish, barracuda and to top it off we got to swim with the turtles which was an unbelievable experience! For the first week we travelled everywhere by bus which was great fun and the second week we hired a 4x4 which is definitely a must if you want to see some of the remote beaches. Also you have to visit Chappies bar and mix with the regulars and try some of the local dishes washed down with a few Wadadli's (local beer).

If you are looking for a home from home in the Caribbean and want glorious beaches, fantastic accommodation, not forgetting Karolls legendary rum punch and local information at your fingertips (whilst watching the pennies) then this is the place to stay without a doubt!!

We just returned from a lovely week at Reefview Apartments, run by expats Karroll and Nick. We stayed in the Beach Cottage, which was perfect for us. Designed and built by Nick, the Cottage is comfortable, very well equipped (e.g. with a good fan in the bedroom and plenty of equipment in the kitchen), and decked out in lovely shells and art work. We loved the outdoor shower (concealed from view by others!), ship-like design and all the windows, which allowed the cool breeze to come through. The little yard is full of flowers and plants, and a BBQ and table for al fresco dining. We loved the 'Reefview Zoo' – two adorable dogs, two cats and a sweet (blind) parrot. At night all you can hear is tree frogs, insects and the sea.

The location probably wouldn't be for everyone, but is ideal for anyone wanting a really relaxing getaway, like us. Nothing touristy around – just a little village (Urlings) where you can go down to buy delicious bread from the bakery or check out the tiny fishing marina. Plenty of donkeys, goats and chickens hanging around. The local beach is lovely – a kind of nature beach with lots of mangroves, frequented only by the occasional local having a dip or fishing. White sand and clear blue waters it is not – but there's plenty of that elsewhere on the island, including a few minutes drive away at Darkwood Beach or Curtain Bluff. For most of the week we enjoyed getting around on the local buses, which are good for seeing people going about their daily business, pretty frequent and much cheaper than taxis – but a bit erratic at night. We hired a car for a couple of days, which did make things easier (it was especially good to have a 4-wheel drive for getting to the beautiful, unspoiled Rendezvous Bay). We felt entirely safe both in the village and travelling everywhere we went around the island.

We went for the welcome BBQ (USD 30 per head), served by Karroll and Nick on their gorgeous porch. This was great - both for the yummy food and for getting to know Karroll and Nick and hearing their recommendations for the island. Karroll was really helpful in arranging extra things for us like car hire and a day trip to Barbuda. Things are generally quite expensive in Antigua (as most of the Caribbean) so you do need to be clear on what your paying – and whether it's in Eastern Caribbean or US Dollars – particularly as many places (including Reefview) are cash only.

Karroll also gave us a peak at the other two apartments that they have at Reefview. Both were really nice – bigger and more modern, with A/C, and nice artwork and furniture inside. But for sheer charm and cosiness we were glad we had picked the adorable Beach Cottage. We were really sad to leave at the end of the week – Antigua is fantastic but our great accommodation and location were also major reasons why we enjoyed our holiday so much.
