“THE Place to Stay in The Scilly Isles!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

Am not going to write chapter and verse but have to say that if you are going to the Scilly Isles for the first time, you can't get a better location than Tregarthens. It is the first hotel nearest St Mary's harbour where all the boatmen depart on trips all over the islands. And when I say close, I mean less than 60 seconds walk!

We stayed here on a B&B basis as wanted freedom to eat out and about which was a good decision. However, we felt obliged to eat in the hotels restaurant the first night to try it out. Not bad but the not the best I've eaten. However, I can't be too critical as the menu does change daily and the staff are most friendly and give excellent service.

We were upgraded free to a sea view room from a basic room (thank you very much Tregarthens). The room was compact but had the said sea view albeit over a long flat roof. However, you could not complain with such a view! My only slight criticism was that the bathroom was probably the most compact I have ever stayed in. I would say that the bath should go and be replaced with a shower cubicle when next upgraded. The facilities in the room were excellent - iron/ironing board, good quality hair dryer, tea / coffee making facilities etc.

Overall, I would most certainly recommend Tregarthens. But would suggest that you stay on a B&B basic as there are some excellent local restaurants to visit - see below.

You must go to High Tide restaurant on St Agnes. One of the best meals I have ever eaten. Catch the supper boat at 6pm from the harbour. Book the table for 6:30pm. The boat departs St Agnes back to St Mary's at 9pm sharp! You must book in advance!

You must go to The Pilots Gig. Less than one minutes walk from Tregarthens. We had a fantastic meal there and the service was excellent.

You must go Spero's. Well worth a visit. The view at sunset are outstanding and food is great.

Enjoy The Scilly Isles!

We have just returned from a four night stay in this hotel and enjoyed it very much. The room was lovely with a huge bed, lovely bathroom and magnificent view over St Mary's harbour. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and the service was very good. The standard of food was high but the portions were small. The hotel has a high standard of cleanliness and is a very relaxed place to chill out in. It was the perfect place to stay for our holiday on St Mary's.

We stayed at the hotel for one night before moving into self catering accommodation on the island.Very impressed with the quality of the room including little touches not seen before such as small fridge containing a bottle of fresh milk for tea/ coffee making which was also ideal for small bottles of water.Staff were very helpful and polite. We would definitely use the hotel again.
We had stayed at the hotel a number of years ago and it is clear that the new management has done a lot to improve the bedrooms, much cleaner and better quality fittings and furniture.

A huge thank you to Carina and all the staff at Tregarthen’s Hotel for making our wedding day on the 29th June 2013 truly amazing. We could not have asked for a better day and all of our guests were delighted. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and did an incredible job of making our day run smoothly, which was no easy task with over 120 daytime guests and 400+ evening guests. From the very first email enquiry, Carina, the General Manager was exceptionally helpful, organised and generous. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, locally sourced, and the service impeccable. The restaurant looked beautiful, full of natural light, with all the decorations carefully arranged by the staff. We had our own beauty room set up in the conservatory with champagne and lunch provided for myself and bridesmaids, which later was turned into a play room with toys and DVDs for all our little ones to have fun. The rooms were stunning many with amazing sea views. The dining room and bar were comfortable and inviting and the terrace was the perfect place to watch the sunset with a lovely glass of wine. We had a wonderful day, which flowed effortlessly from day to evening to night without any stress or difficulties for myself and my husband. The whole day was full of lovely memories, and owe this to the extremely hard working and professional team at Tregarthen’s. We cannot recommend this hotel highly enough as both a fantastic place to stay and wedding venue.

We have stayed at Tregarthens many times over the last 20yrs.The cost of getting to IOS is obviously prohibitive reflecting in fewer visitors. Management very helpful and friendly, some staff need better training. Rooms excellent, stunning views. Food: Breakfast varied from good to poor.
Dinner very good only complaint, hotel of this quality should not be serving PLATED meals.
Patio and outside areas needed sweeping and weeding on a regular basis.Having said the above we would go again.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view

My wife and I travelled with our two young children and the hotel were very helpful, with baby equipment in the room and great breakfasts for our toddler. We would love to go back before too long. The only downside is that there are far prettier spots on St Mary's than the dock area.
