“Excellent stay in Sofitel Paris.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2010

My partner and I stayed at the Sofitel La Defense in late October 2010 for 3 nights and booked through lastminute.com. We arrived at the hotel an hour before the check in time, we were expecting to be told that our room wasn't ready and that we would have to wait, this however this was not the case. Alexander, the receptionist on our arrival, promptly checked us in and showed us to our room within 5 minutes . He was very helpful, polite and a real credit to the hotel.

The hotel is stunning, situated in the quiet business district approximately 2/3 miles from the city. It takes around 10/15 minutes by metro to the main city centre. It is a 45 minute walk to the Arche de Triomphe which is one straight road from the hotel. We were worried about the location not being suitable for sightseeing, this however was not the case. It was nice going back to a quiet hotel just outside of the busy city centre after a hectic day. We travelled by Eurostar and it took us under a hour from Gare de Nord to our hotel via Metro.

The hotel was extremely clean and modern, and all staff that we spoke to were extremely helpful and spoke excellent English. Our room was stunning. We had a view of a tower block to the rear of the hotel but we weren't expecting a beautiful view of Paris. The bed was unbelievably comfy and we had three excellent nights sleep. The room came equipped with a flat screen tv with bbc channels and speaker in the bathroom, and an ipod dock. The maid cleaned in the morning and then returned in the evening to prepare the room for night by putting on jazz music, placing chocolate by the bed and pulling the sheets back, which was a nice touch. The room was faultless.

Our stay included breakfast. This included cereals, pastries, and a small selection of hot food. The drinks provided were tea, coffee and juices. The service was good however on the second day it took a waiter 10 minutes to bring a hot drink to our table and by this stage we were nearly ready to leave. The hot food selection included scrambled egg and sausages. On two out the three days it was cold and on the other day in was luke warm.

Despite one negative comment overall we had a brilliant stay in the Sofitel Paris and didn't want to return home. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Thanks to the staff for making our stay so special.

The worst hotel experience for our travelling in France this September / October (maybe for all of our travel).

We are frequent travelers around the world especially in Europe and did not usually give negative comments to any hotels or restaurants after a trip but we can’t help this time.

We made full-payment via on-line booking at Accor Group website (with a confirmation email from ACCOR HOTELS RESERVATION accorhotels.reservation@accor.com dated 19 Jul) for a three-nite stay with Sofitel, La Defence. And expected a 5-star experience as you travelers had with Sofitel, La Defence.

We checked in at about 3:30pm on 1 Oct and were informed that there was no room reserved for us. The front desk staff provided us a reason of “technical problem” and the hotel rooms had been overbooked. The solution to this “technical problem” was to transfer us to another 4 stars hotel Pullman, La Defense (There is no upgrading but we are charged the same hotel room rate of our reservation in Sofitel) or we might repack our luggage and move back to Sofitel on day 3 if we wanted. Obviously there was no good choice they could offer.

We were so reluctant to be transferred because we had in fact fully paid our room. There is a guarantee to provide room in Sofitel in their online sale conditions but now that was a lie. Sofitel should have informed us prior to our day of arrival if there was a genuine “technical problem” which rendered them not able to provide us a room. We reserved and fully paid the room 72 DAYS in advance. Can you believe that Sofitel just realized the hotel was overbooked on the day we arrived with our luggage and could not arrange us a room!?

If Sofitel had given us sufficient advance notice and offered Pullman to us, it might sound more reasonable and we should be more ready to accept such arrangement. Otherwise, we might opt for refund and find other alternatives. Sofitel could have foreseen by their experience that we have no choice but to accept their offer with our heavy luggage at the hotel front desk upon our arrival. Personally we really think this was a deception that they tried to sell all their available hotel rooms under their group at our no-choice situation by their alleged system faults. We were/ are sick of this.

Whilst we had the “discussion” with the hotel staff, we noted that there were people checking-in, which meant there were rooms available. But the hotel staff repeated that there was no room for us and kept persuading us to be transferred to Pullman.

At that moment, we were already tired with a day travel from Bordeaux and really needed a rest before our evening event. We knew that it’s pretty difficult to walk-in another reasonably good hotel for 3 consecutive nights stay without reservation in advance in any seasons in Paris. After wasting an hour at Sofitel front desk, we, reluctantly and finally, moved to Pullman. We expected that Sofitel had informed Pullman about our case. However, to our surprise (again), we wasted another hour to queue for check-in and the front desk staff of Pullman had no idea about and asked “Why we were transferred from Sofitel?” We had to pay the taxi fare ourselves (a ride from Sofitel to Pullman) and could only get our taxi fare back (which Sofitel “generously” committed to pay) with a number of questions by the Pullman’s staff afterward.

Staying in Pullman is an average experience (absolutely not Sofitel’s class and there is no iPod sound system which provided in Sofitel).

We are serious in INTEGRITY and TRUST. As Sofitel are not serious on their guarantee in their sale conditions, to avoid disappointment and inconvenience (even worse a deception) again in future, it’s no reason for us to choose Sofitel again, extending to those hotels under Accor Group around the world. We will definitely let our friends know about our experience with Sofitel, La Defence.

Dear wichan70, we thank you for your comments. We regret the fact that the taxi we have booked for you and the upgrade in deluxe room at the Pullman Hotel has not met your expectations. Your booking at our facility was actually guaranteed nevertheless, the unwelcomed technical issue in our system was not anything we had any control on. Be assured that we respect and consider your opinion and understand your disappointment. We would be pleased to welcome you back in order for you to discover our Hotel in a more positive atmosphere. Sincerely.

This hotel is in the business district and we must say we have never slept better. The hotel is quiet and the beds are comfortable. Very clean and the staff at the front desk are very helpful. Taking the metro to see all the attractions was very easy. The metro is about a 2 minute walk from the hotel. We never ate the restaurant but almost every morning they had fresh apples for the guests. The Staff was helpful and spoke english. The only thing to watch out for is that if you need a taxi and they pre-arrange it, the taxi company will charge you a fee 20 euro, so ask about that before getting a taxi. If you want quiet this is the hotel to stay at and get away from the heart of the city.

Spent only two nights but was very pleased with all aspects of this hotel. The room was spacious, well-appointed and very clean. Staff was friendly and very helpful, especially in arranging taxi service which was very difficult due to fuel strikes occurring in France at the time of my visit. Did not utilize dining facilities. I can recommend Sofitel Paris La Defense without any reservations.

The location was brilliant, literally a couple of mins from the station. There are loads of exits but make your way to the defense area 10, you cant miss it.

The shops around the hotel are closed but there is a shopping centre call quatre 4 temps ( i think ) literally 5 - 10 min walk. The grand arche is pretty unique and if you stand up you can see the arc de triomphe. Amazing connections on the metro.

Hotel was brilliant, the bed will be the talking point, literally every sleeping position is comfortable. The bathroom and facilities are brilliant as is the buffet breakfast.

The one thing i would do is, get some food from somewhere just so, you can have a midnight snack if required or stay out in the centre of Paris!!! Eiffel tower is a must, it glitters like stars at night.

La Defense is spectacularly empty, if you know London this is like Canary Wharf, it's new, skyscraper and concrete and at the weekend there are very few human beings around.
The hotel is welcoming, comfortable, clean, the staff are friendly, warm, helpful. The room was bigger than we might have expected with usual amenities and the usual, Sofitel, extremely comfortable bed. Service at breakfast was brilliant attentive staff made it it clear what was available and took trouble to provide extras. We got a fantastic deal which included the room, breakfast and metro passes. It was a real pleasure to be staying in such a comfortable hotel, the emptiness of the area made for quiet nights sleep and the travel by metro to the centre was no problem. We loved it.

At first I was concerned about the location of this property: If you look at a map, you will see that the Sofitel La Defense is situated outside the centre of Paris, in the central business district. However, after arriving, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the hotel was a stone's throw from the magnificant Grand Arche and, after a short walk to the Seine, not too far from the Arc de Triomphe (you can see these two monuments from one another as they are in a direct line of sight).

For those who don't like walking, the hotel is next to the Esplanade (La Defense) station (metro) and a few minutes walk to the RER network. Get to know the public transport - it's so easy and quick! Once you're on the train, it's only a few minutes to the centre of Paris, no matter which area you are interested in. It only took me a couple of rides to get used to the system, and I was a first time visitor to Paris.

The hotel staff all willingly speak excellent English. The service is impeccable. You are shown to the lift after checking in, and any request is handled promptly. The only gripe I had with front desk, is that one particular lady was so eager to please every customer that you did not have her full attention when speaking to her, as she always gave so much effort to greet passing customers as they came and went.

I was upgraded to a superior room due to the deal I obtained through easytobook.com. For the price (I paid about EUR900 for five nights - but note that it IS worth more), it was of a very high standard for Paris, and so much better value than many other centrally located hotels. I will admit though; I prefer to stay at five star establishments at the expense of being centrally located), but as stated previously, this is easily overcome.

Regarding the room itself, it featured z dual head shower, nice amenities, lots of TV channels, with a few English speaking channels (mainly the BBC), complimentary Evian mineral water, minibar with space in the fridge for guests, VERY comfortable bed, and pleasant modern decor. Internet rates from room were operated through Orange, and were quite cheap (20 Euros for seven days of unlimited access). The hotel also features a fine dining restaurant (Italian) and a cocktail bar in the lobby. There is a big shopping centre nearby (near the Grand Arche), some restaurants and fast food chains. You will need to walk a bit further for traditional pattiseries and al fresco dining etc.

In summary
great hotel with that Sofitel feel;
workable location;
impeccable service,
nice room with VERY comfy bed,
Magnifique!
