“No Worries in Marahau”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

My wife and I spent 2 nights at the Ocean View Chalets in Marahau in early March 2013. The chalets are located pretty close to where the road ends and the park begins (maybe 1km away at most). The town of Marahau, a 10 minute walk from the chalets, is tiny and consists of just a couple of places to eat and a general store where limited provisions can be bought and tours arranged. Both nights we got take-out from the Fat Tui, a permanent food truck located near the chalets – a fun experience and the food was good. The chalets are perched up on a hill providing them with their “Ocean view” although it should be noted that they are not adjacent to the beach Our chalet (#6) had a nice view looking out towards Abel Tasman park and the water. The chalet is rustic but comes with most everything you’ll need. Our host, Robert, was very nice and arranged our water taxi drop-off for the morning. Although breakfast is not complimentary Robert will provide a breakfast for a reasonable fee. There are also laundry facilities on site which we took advantage of.
I liked the Ocean View Chalets. There was something genuine and unpretentious about them. Sure, the chalets might feel a little dated to some, but I thought they suited the town of Marahau and its “no worries” lifestyle perfectly.

Room Tip: Chalet #6 has a nice view from the deck and seemed to be in one of the prime locations.

Wow, what a place to stay. The location is wonderful, right near to the start of the national park. We stayed for 3 nights and it was perfect for a day of walking and then a day of Kayaking. The hosts are wonderful, very helpful in all respects. We had a studio chalet which had a lovely balcony and chairs. As we didn't have a full kitchen we booked the breakfast and lunches, both were excellent. We can recommend the freedom Kayaking - we had some tuition then were left to do our own thing. It was amazing especially around Adelle Island - birds and seals. The only downside was leaving and we will definitely return.

Ocean View Chalets are at the end of the road in Marahau, To travel further you'll need to walk, paddle or take a water taxi. And that is perfect. We had the distinct pleasure of spending three nights in a studio room and our only disappointment was that we had to leave.

If you are looking for a base from which to explore Abel Tasman National Park then look no further. But be aware that a lot of people are looking for that same base and you might be left out unless you book early. We thought we were being a little obsessive when we began booking our rooms June 15th for a February 24th visit. Instead, we were fortunate to book the last room available - if you want a choice of accommodation, rather than the last studio, then you need to book a year in advance.

The advance planning is well worth it. Staying in Marahau avoids daily car or water taxi trips to and from Kaiteriteri or Motueka.

Our studio had a tree top view of Sandy Bay from our little deck. The room offered a fridge, TV,and a view of the neighboring geese on their daily stroll and horseback riders going to or returning from a ride across the remarkably broad and sandy beach. If you want to clutter up your life with the Internet you'll need to take your laptop to the reception cabin and get a password. The room was a little cramped but still a great place to return to from a day of hiking or kayaking.

So, why an Excellent rating? Because it felt like Excellent - not because of the physical characteristics but because of the ability to relax in a beautiful part of the world.

This is the perfect base for visiting Abel Tasman NP. Up on a hill the chalets are far enough from each other to provide perfect privacy. The chalet we were in was spacious, well maintained and had a big balcony- almost a veranda. And views of the bay from balcony are gorgeous. Congratulations to Konstanca and Robert for this grandiose place.
Don´t miss this gem!

We really did not want to leave. The views from the chalet were amazing. The chalet was very comfy. The living room/sitting area had a fantastic view of the ocean and a pasture of horses grazing happily. The cook top required an engineering degree from Germany in order to operate it. Everything was very classy and cozy. I would highly recommend a trip here just to stay at the chalets.

If you have booked any sight seeing tours, check with your tour company. Most of them leave from Marahau so will save you the long slow trip back to Motueka.

We stayed in one of the cabins & it really was as if we were in our own bit of paradise. Beautiful views, comfortable room - just relaxing on the veranda of the chalet, soaking it all in, we couldn't have asked for anything more.

We had a studio room for 1 night, because a cabin wasn't available, & the studio room was fine, but to us the cabins are definitely worth the extra $.

We had 3 geneations in 1 family staying in 2 chalets-grandparents, teenagers and parents-a family group of 7. The exquisite chalets were of the highest quality but very affordable. So much thought has gone into planning the interior design and the facilities of the chalets it was quite unbelievable. Such attention to detail, all our needs were fully catered for and an excellent selection of just released DVDs available at no charge once we had finished watching the sun go down. Breathtaking views, very helpful service for booking the water taxis and nothing was too much trouble for the owners and staff. Will definitely go again.

Room Tip: All chalets are idyllic. You will not be disappointed.
