“Always a pleasant experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

The thermal pool facility is in a lovely setting with a stream just outside the front entrance. It is $10 for one person to get a private hot pool - which is very hot and you are only allowed to stay in for 20 minutes. It's always great to then go round to the public pool which is warm and often very busy. It was a cold day when we visited and the warmth was most welcoming. I have been to the thermal pools many times over the years and really enjoy it. The staff are friendly and helpful and the facilities are clean. There are lockable lockers available and there are also non-lockable ones by the main pool. They just about need to think about getting some bigger dressing areas as it was pretty crowded in the womens one, and has been most of the times I have visited.

“They mean hot!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012

We were here to ski, but a warm and wet front came in from Queensland and shut down all skiing for both north and south islands. Hit this hot spring per suggestion from some of the locals. It did not disappoint. For about $32, our family of four got a private room (no ceiling / roof). Temp was about 40 c. Outside weather was temp was about 9 c with light cool rain. For a lesser rate, you can enter the general pool area with temp around 36 c. We went during the day time, but heard from another group that a visit a night and see all the stars is spectacular. Put this on your list especially if the weather doesn't cooperate during ski season.

“A little disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012 via mobile

Well we had high hopes, especially as a friend had raved about the open-air experience.
The location is great, well signposted, plenty of parking, beautiful stream to cross to the entrance.. and the staff are fantastic, welcoming, helpful and friendly. The price is very reasonable too.
We have to say though that the room itself is very basic; functional (though without showers) but very basic.
There is an opening to the sky but really nothing that could be described as open-air. And don't get me wrong, the staff make no such claims, it was our ditzy friend, who may even have been talking about the public pool, which we didn't try (it is chlorinated).
The surrounding grounds are very nicely done, with a pleasant walk through the thermal area - and in a nice departure from NZ tradition it doesn't claim to be what it isn't, in fact they just let you go for a walk and enjoy it. A plus was seeing the hot vents being genuinely used to cook food for the local marae.
All in all it was worth stopping i.n, but the Polynesian Pools in Rotorua will be hard to beat

“Just like it has always been”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2012 via mobile

I have been going here since childhood when my family and friends always had a private pool. Cross the bridge and rest. Great after a day walking or skiing, and the trout in the river are always entertaining. Clean, orderly and just what you need at the end of the day.

“Hot!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

The water is deliciously hot in the private pools. Immediate surroundings not too flash but staff friendly.
