“Great winter break!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

Thanks you Smugglers Cove for making this a great winter break for us.
My daughter and I arrived on 20th November for a 10 day break to a warm welcome. We were given wet towels and a refreshing drink after a long day of travel. We are attended to very quickly even though there were quite a lot of people who had arrived at the same time. I know the reviews here are really fixed, but our experience was very good. Yes, some staff are rude and not very friendly, but I would say most are really nice. Chaco, Sheldon and Jiva from the Activity team are brill. They were friendly and warm, always smiling and friendly. Chaco with his beautiful smile and dancing! Sheldon always so lovely and Jiva seems so bubbly!
Food is good on the whole. Staff in the The Cove were always very polite. We didn't really like the Waterfront. Food was not that good and staff a bit rude.
Our room was a short walk to most places, but it was always a pleasant walk. This meant that it was quite and sleep was never a problem!
The resort does need some updates. Room could have been better. Our shower broke, we had a water leak in our room and our TV was not very good, but this didn't spoil this break. The staff attended to these problems very quickly.
The gardens are kept very neat and clean. The room could do with updating really.
There is plenty to do if you don't like sitting around the pool and beach, but book it early.
There are security staff along the beach every day.
Would I go back? YES, definitely. Loved St Lucia, loved the resort. What a beautiful island :)
I would do anything to go back now!

Room Tip: Stay away from the Piton Bar. Music is very loud at night

We were at the Cove from Nov 25 to Dec 2 and our time there was great. Food at both the buffet - good selection of food and lots of it - and the a la cartes were delicious. The rooms were very comfortable and clean. Loved the proximity of the pools to the beach and the wide openness of the lounge and buffet. While some of the staff were somewhat unfriendly and standoffish, others such as Jackie, Chantal and Chacho (who was extremely easy on the eyes) made our time there fun and very pleasant. If you are looking for a wild party atmosphere then the Cove is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a nice place for a relaxing week then try it out. There were lots of water and non water activites free of charge. The night we arrived our air conditioner didn't work. Without hesitation, we were immediately upgraded to a suite. Tuesday morning there was a labour dispute and the wait staff, cooks etc did not show up for work. Not to disappoint the guests, the managers, office staff, leisure staff etc all pitched in and made sure we all had some breakfast. Great team work!! We would recommend you bring your own bubba mug to eliminate the many trips to the bar - small drink glasses. Try BBC drinks - delicious!! The only disappointment was the nightly entertainment, however, we were somewhat prepared from reading other reviews prior to our arrival. The show on the last night was very good. All in all a very pleasant and relaxing week. My whole family enjoyed themselves immensely.

Room Tip: Rooms in the 500 series a bit far from the pool / eating area

We arrived on the 25th of November for 7 days first impression was o.m.g what did we get ourselves into.upon arrival it says you are greeted with a wet towel and a drink the towels were there placed on a table but we did not get a drink of any sort they seemed very confused and unorganized. They tell you to just leave your bags where they are for us was outside where they drop the guests off and they take you to the buffet restaurant to get something to eat while they check you in. The food at the Buffet at this time was very limited but was a nice touch after travelling all day even though the food was just ok at this particular time.We went back to the lobby and they walked us to our rooms. Thankfully we were about 3 rows back from the piton Lounge so it was close to just about everything we had rooms 473 and 476 as most people have stated the resort is dated but it is kept very clean.the rooms seem to pron to having little ants and mostly in the washroom it may bother others was not a big concern to us they did not overwhelm the room. We did find a few of the staff uptight but with the exception of 1 or 2 of them if i persisted on talking to them and joking around they lightened up and started to talk and laugh otherwise the staff were warm and friendly. Jackie who does the archery and fitness plus the games is great she was always happy and would do anything to help out and good for a laugh or two. Lawrence and Murphy did the water sports they both work really hard Murphy for some reason on Saturday was left alone to run the water sports and even though frustrated went above and beyond to make sure the guests were looked after both at the office and on the beach and still laughed and carried on with the guests he deserves alot of credit he worked very hard that day. Andra sometimes does the reservations for the restaurants and sometimes works the asian restaurant she is very nice and always had a smile. Some of the other issues we read on here that are true is there tiles missing from some of the pools yes they are small tiles why in the world you would make this a problem i have no idea the pools are really nice they could use a resurfacing but they are beautiful. Maybe it was the time we travelled yes sometimes its hard to get the chairs near the beach but we always managed to get some during the day they give you towel tokens when you arrive if you don't hand them in upon departure they charge 25 bucks we left them in the room because we decided to go to goodwill before we left and purchased beach towels very cheap there and washed them before we went. Another good idea is bring big travel mugs most of the drinks they serve are in small glasses similar to what the hotels use to serve juice in the mornings. i think the biggest problem there was on Tuesday am it was apparent that something was up as staff from all over the resort were working in the buffet restaurant that morning to make sure breakfast was made for the guests not really sure how to handle this one do you give the staff praise for working together and making sure the guest were served breakfast absolutly they deserve praise for doing an excellent job and not walking out like the others. This walkout effected all the days activities on the resort and some were cancelled and other did not run until after lunch ie water sports although we did not get to upset about my family missed on on doing alot of the things they wanted to do on the resort.they closed the water sports mosst of the week saying the wind was to high and by no means was it that bad outside of maybe one day. We did an excursion off the resort due to the fact that for the same excursion the resort wanted 950 usd verses 600 that we paid Look for Jimmy on the Beach he is usually down by where the horse is his boat is the renegade and we had the time of our lives it made the whole vacation worth while they pick you up at the hotel take you the rodney bay marina from there you go in his boat the renegade to up the coast stop at another marin where celeberties are sometimes knowen to dock you get time to shop and just check things out for about a half hour then back inthe boat up the coast to see the love cave then to another bay to go snokeling from there up the coast to the pitons where you stop and have lunch at a little restaurant from there you go by cab to the volcano mud bath its very hot over 100 degrees the day we were there but there are showers to wash the mud of if you use it the mud is in pails and not that hot.Fron ther you go by cab to the waterfall one side is hot the other cold was very nice after doing this we went back to the boat another couple that was with us wanted to shop in town and they were more than happy to accomadate them we just waited on the boat they seve you drinks while on the boat as well bottled water, beer, rum punch this is all included in your rate you pay no extra other captians at the resort want your money so they will do anything to get your business one told us that jimmy had no insurance and was not legal and when we left port we would be arrested by the port police and it was a scam this is not true he showed us his credentials and there were no problems the renegade is almost new and one of the better boats on the island. back to the resort if your going to relax and take it easy this resort has it all food was good to excellent we founf out part way through you can go to the italian restaurant anytime during business hours and order a pizza to go and it is also open for lunch no reservation needed. the entertainment sucks so bad it isn't funny other than the saturday night fire show i think this is the only night people did not get up and leave because the couldn't handle the racket from the bad entertainment they seldom play any music through out the day and when they did it was not carribean music as you would expect. for the price it was quite reasonable the 7 hours it takes to get there from toronto ontario makes for 2 long days of travel but we did enjoy ourselves if the resort did a little finessing and organizing it could easily be a 4 star plus resort with its beautful flowers and plants some minor updates on the rooms would go a long way as well but we did not go to sit in our rooms so it did not bother us we found the beds comfortable and the room clean the food good that is half the battle in my eyes. We all enjoyed ourselves and the island is beautiful don't waist your money on private transfer to the resort the driver bearly talked we were suppose to get champagne and didn't his vehicle was so so nothing to write home about the resorts transfer was better and the bus stopped for them to have drinks on the way ours didn't go and enjoy the island is worth seeing i would go again but maybe consider a different resort if smugglers cove has not changed or been updated I would like to add i feel that transat should be a little concerned about the staff walking off a resort that they offer vacations to i know i would. .

Room Tip: try to get 473 in that area close to everything not much walking to get to stuff and not noisey from...

We spend a week in Smugglers from the 18th November and I cannot speak highly enough!

The resort it gorgeous and the grounds well maintained!
Lorna organised our wedding to perfection! She really is amazing! no stress involved!

We stayed at another report for our honeymoon and the views/location nothing matched smugglers! Color box photo's are also amazing!!

We stayed in a suite room 186 which was lovely! Well cleaned and a nice walk past marco the parrot who you can get to wave!

All the staff we encountered we lovely and laid back! The pools are gorgeous! Our favourite was the swim up bar! The view is amazing!

The food is nice, you can always find something to eat even if you are fussy like me! Didn't have a chance to use the al a carte.

I would highly reccomend this resort to anyone and we certainly plan on returning for our anniversary in the future!

Thank you everyone at smugglers :-)

Some other reviewers commented that the staff was rude. Unfortunately, we also found this to be true, which was rather strange since we had vacationed in the Caribbean many times and never experienced any negativity. Some of the staff was extremely warm and friendly though. We asked our room attendant why many of her coworkers were so sour. She said the union thrives on animosity and tells them to say "we only earn 4 dollars an hour" to guests hoping they'll put pressure on management. I'm not sure if stating this goes beyond TripAdvisor's rules but I think it is important for potential travelers to know about the rather serious labor problems (which recently erupted into a strike). The bartender added that everyone knows which staff members have a bad attitude but management can't do much about it. St.Lucia is a gorgeous island and Smugglers is a fine resort so I am torn giving such a low rating because the good people of SL clearly need the tourism dollars. But the country has clearly changed since I was there many years ago. P.S. If you go, be sure to visit Soufriere, it was the highlight of our trip

Room Tip: All good but some have little or no view of the beach

Dear dennis y,
It is unfortunate that the usual attentive Saint Lucian hospitality we are know for was apparently not in place during your visit. While we appreciate your concern we would like to assure our visitors that the staff here at Smugglers Cove are pleased to do all within their ability to service each guest's needs. We can only hope this will not be your lasting memory of us and look forward to seeing you again in the future.

+went to St Lucia with mixed feelings after reading a lot of different reviews, we had a wonderful week food and staff were great I have to give a special mention to Laurence who went the extra mile to provide the best service for my two daughters and make this holiday special. I only have one complaint the room needed upgraded a bit rundown but the staff and food and trips we took made up for this. Had a very good Holiday. If you are going to go to St Lucia to stay in your room this is not the Holiday for you. #gobananaboating

Excellent resort. We had a brilliant two weeks holiday. The staff were really friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Selma was especially great. The food in all the restaurants was delicious. The Italian restaurant was particularly good at lunchtimes. The rooms were clean and a good size. The grounds of the hotel were beautiful and very well maintained. The trip to Pidgeon Island from the hotel was well worth it. Fantastic time. Thanks.
