Through the years we referred to it as "that great house on the hill with the louvered walls and the large wrap-around porch." The place we rented in 1997, our first stay on St. Lucia.
When we made the arrangements for this year's stay we didn't realize it was the same villa. A second storey was added 5 years ago, making it look quite different in the pictures on the web site. It was a thrill to be back in such a beautiful home.
On the ground level most of the outside walls are louvered, so even in the house we felt like we were outside; and the gracious porch invited us to really be outside, even on a rainy day. I enjoyed sleeping in the east bedroom downstairs and waking to the morning sky visible through the mosquito netting and the louvered walls. The second storey was perfect for those who take their nature in air-onditioned comfort, with TV, and ports for their i-phones in the clock-radios. Some of the beds can be separated to make 11 beds in all, plus one in a room behind the kitchen. We were preceded by a group of 15.
The new spacious deck, the cozy "Wittering Corner," and the wide variety of outdoor furniture added to our pleasure. The 270 degree view from in front of the house, as well as from the upstairs porch, is spectacular. We could see Atlantic sunrise and Caribbean sunset.
Francis is the caretaker, gardener, and jack-of-all-trades. Lydia and Merlinda came in every day from 9-3 to clean and cook. All three were very pleasant and extremely accomodating. Merlind's cheesecake is out of this world.
Reduit Beach, the best on the island, is a 15 minute drive. Two other smaller beaches are a little closer. Mass in Gros Islet and shopping were also close. It was a treat not having to deal with the traffic around Castries.
This was our 5th visit to St. Lucia and easily my best experience of the island.
