My husband and I just returned from our 5 year anniversary trip/babymoon to Cap Maison. I researched this hotel before we arrived and we were very much looking forward to this stay. I was aware of some issues with the hotel before we arrived after seeing some pictures posted on Tripadvisor.
Pros: Absolutely beautiful hotel and grounds. We could tell that a lot of love is put into the upkeep of the grounds and the actual hotel itself. The master gardener was out everyday and we had the opportunity to talk to him and he put so much thought and care into the landscape and it really showed. The grounds are swept everyday and staff is always around to make sure everything is looking its best.
The staff at Cap Maison is amazing. We have stayed in many 5 star hotels and it is rare to find such caring, attentive, and simply genuine staff. They remembered our favorite seats at the restaurant, our favorite drinks and our usual breakfast orders. It made you feel very special. Vanessa made us special juices everyday and Maggie took time to talk to us and greet us with a smile each morning. You could tell the staff is treated nicely here and that says so much. It makes your stay worthwhile. Conceriege staff only wanted to make our dreams come true and went above and beyond to make our excurisions fun and fit to our needs.
Location: The location of Cap Maison is close to Rodney Bay, where all of the restaurants are, but off the beaten path, so that it is quiet and secluded, which was great for the romantic vibe we wanted to feel.
The size of this hotel was perfect. We never knew there were other guests there and felt like we had a private villa all to ourselves. Many times it was just us at the pool, and that was perfect.
The beach is small, which was great, as all of the beach on St. Lucia are public. This beach felt private and there were always lounge chairs and towels readily available. We really enjoyed having lunch at The Naked Fisherman and the staff here were also super attentive.
Spa: Needs a facelift. Nothing to rave about, but we did have good massages.
The rooms! This was a big one for me, as I love a comfortable and luxurious room. We booked our trip through Amex and asked for the least expensive room. We did this because the website said for the most part, each room is wonderful and you can't go wrong. I also figured I would ask for an upgrade, as most of the reviews said to do this and they were accomodated. When we arrived, we were given a garden room with a separate sitting room. The size was wonderful, and for a garden room, the view was actually pretty decent. The location of our room was perfect too, overlooking a small pool that we went to everyday. However, when we walked into our room the smell of mold and mildew was pretty evident, and later a smell of urine was constantly lingering in the sitting room. There was a drainage problem in the shower, so the water would just sit and never go down the entire time we were there and our air would randomly shut off and wouldn't go back on. The room itself was dark and musty, and the bathroom had absolutely no ventilation. We told them when we got there of the smell, and they told us that there were guests before us that didn't complain. This wasn't the best response for me, but okay. The duty manager took my husband to see another room, which was a basic garden room. He came back and said that we should just live with the smell, as she told him we were given a upgrade to begin with and this was the best we would get. The room she showed him was tiny and she basically said this was the best we would get. The only reason I had a problem with this was because were told my numerous employees that the hotel was not at capacity. For a week stay, I felt like we should've been accomodated better. I think that if you stay there, you have to be pretty specific of what kind of room you want and location.
Our room also got pretty loud as our the main windows to the room were to the walkway where other rooms were, so we could hear everything. The glass was pretty thing and shutters didn't close completely. This also caused us to have little privacy, since the only windows to the actual room opened to the public walkway.
In all, we loved it here and would go back with a more specific idea of what room we want. However, I think there shouldn't be so much variance in room style and type. I heard people rave about their rooms and it only made me wonder what the difference was.
