“Perfect Italian getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

We absolutely should have stayed for a few more days at Casa di Maio. Doreen was an amazing hostess and made us feel completely comfortable as soon as we arrived. We were greeted with a bottle of local wine and snacks after a long car journey.

The rooms are spotless, well appointed, and thoughtfully put together. Doreen made sure that we had everything we needed and had fabulous recommendations about local sights, restaurants, and wineries. She provided us with detailed directions and armed us with maps so we wouldn't get lost.

The highlight are her breakfasts which were nice departure from the cornettos and cappuccinos we'd been having for breakfast in Italian cafes up to that point. Doreen prepares a sumptuous array for breakfast ranging from yogurt, granola, soft boiled eggs, fresh baked croissants, frittatas, and more - she is an amazing chef!

My only regret for our third vacation to Italy is that we only stayed one evening at Casa di Maio. This home is to be enjoyed for a longer period of time. The location is perfect for exploring the area, the home is just beautiful and well-decorated inside and out, and I can't remember a more peaceful, restful sleep. But, what really makes this so perfect is Doreen. She'll welcome you with open arms as if you are visiting an old dear friend. You feel instantly comfortable, she has thought of every amenity that you would need, and the house is in a beautiful setting to enjoy a slow breakfast (which is deliciously prepared by Doreen), or a sunset glass of wine, or to spend a day relaxing and enjoying the amazing scenery. Don't hesitate to stay here, you won't regret it unless you make the mistake that we did of only staying one night...

We stayed here for 5 days of our 3 week trip through Italy. This was by far the best B&B or hotel we stayed primarily because of Doreen. Doreen is a fabulous hostess. She went out of her way to make our stay wonderful and easy. She would draw us detailed maps, schedule wine tours, and whatever else we asked. She made the best hot breakfasts every morning and even went out and got decaffeinated coffee after she found out I don't drink caffeinated coffee and told her she didn't need to buy it for me. The place is quite lovely and comfortable as well. My husband and I still talk about Casa di Maio and Doreen. We will definitely go back to Casa di Maio when we return to Italy in the future. She packed snacks for my 5 year old son every day. She is a gem and her place is really lovely. Thank you Doreen; you are the best.

It was the best Italian vacation in my live. And it is the people that made it - namely Doreen, the owner of Casa di Maio. Wonderful!

We agree with all the other comments - high praise is indeed due to Doreen and her lovely B&B.

We stayed for two nights while travelling between the Cote d'Azur and Firenze. Although the Asti area/Piemonte were a little bit of a side trip from that route, we are very pleased we did so. The drive up the autostrada from near Genoa to Asti was fantastic - an amazing road of tunnels and bridges - well worth the toll. Very scenic.

The GPS took us to the right road, and Doreen's directions were spot-on, so we found the place easily. Doreen greeted us with local sparkling wine and a selection of cold meats and cheese - we were made feel very welcome. The house has great views around the surrounding hills and is located on a high ridge with grape vines all around. The rooms are first class (great bathroom, excellent plumbing!).

As others have said, Doreen was incredibly helpful. She is a great source of information about the local area, and is able to organize tours of local wineries and the like. She suggested a great local restaurant for dinner, and very kindly drove us there and back, so my husband and I could relax over a bottle of wine.

We went to a local wine-growing area - Barolo - while there. About half an hour's drive away. Very scenic - dozens of hilltop villages and hills just covered in grape vines. Barolo itself is very pretty, has some lovely restaurants (see separate review), plenty of places to buy local wine, and great walks.

And did I mention Doreen's breakfasts? They are just great! She takes a lot of pride in what she does, and it shows through in everything.

Do yourself a favour and stay at Casa di Maio for a few days!

We spent two lovely nights in Casa di Maio in the middle of April. Doreen was a fantastic hostess in every way. In addition to feeding us the most wonderful breakfasts - she took us on a wine tasting tour of three different wine producers. We had a great and educational time, tasting our way through Nebbiolos and Barberas.
The rooms at Casa di Maio are very comfortable, the bathrooms sleak and modern and Doreen has thought of every little detail to make her guests feel welcome.
We highly recommend Casa di Maio - and hope to return one day. Full marks!

We had the most unbelievable week here. Doreen was amazing. The rooms are beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The breakfasts were the best we have ever had at any hotel, restaurant or b&b. Doreen even catered amazingly for my gluten free allergy. To top it all off, Doreen is an amazingly lovely host.
