“Charming, peaceful rural retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2009

We booked here at the last-minute, looking for somewhere to stay near Matlock. It was easy to find, up a drive from the main road, secluded but not too far from the peaceful buzz of Matlock.

We checked in and were upgraded to a larger room, the receptionist (young chap) was very friendly, showed us to our room which was huge with a clean, smart en-suite shower room. Stylish but traditional and a lovely big bed!

We went down to dinner and sat in the bar area with a G&T, chatting to the same chap who checked us in. Relaxed atmosphere with a bit of background music. Went through to the restaurant for dinner, again, very relaxed and not too prim and proper. Food was delicious, with nice hearty portions and friendly service from our man again.

Retiring full and happy to bed, the only very slight drawback was dodgy television reception, but who needs telly in an away-from-it-all place like this.

Next morning was a perfect spring morning, and we lay in bed, watching the birds in the trees through thte windows for an hour. Breakfast was a hearty full English, with everything free-range and local (including absolutely DELICIOUS bacon from the nearby Chatsworth Estate!).

A fantastic stay, with friendly service, lovely food, a chilled-out but slightly traditional atmosphere and in a beautiful setting. We'll definitely be back!

PS: Perfectly situated for Peak District, East Midlands Outlet Centre, Nottingham, etc, etc

We stayed as part of a wedding party that had booked out all of the rooms. The reception finished late and we were up for breakfast early............... the same staff evening and night, smiling, friendly and had time to tell us about the history of the house. Alison House had a very nice, olde worlde charm about it. I would say it's perfect for a base for exploring the local area.

We stayed some time ago but still talk about our wonderful weekend at this guest house. There are some lovely walks right outside this guest house to enjoy the winter sunshine. We had plenty of individual attention, loved the room and the view and the Christmas dinner was fantastic.

After a week staying in some of the best B&Bs in England the drive up to this hotel from the road boded well: nice location, lots of greenery. The reception area too wasn't bad either but I have to say that the room was below par. Other places at these prices are jaw-droppingly gorgeous, this place, frankly, ain't.
I don't want to be overly harsh because the staff were very helpful in serving us the occasional drink and booking us taxis, etc. but the standard of the room itself (the most important thing really) was a let down.
Let's get down to specifics: the room wasn't clean, the pictures on the walls were covered in dust; the bathroom was uncomfortable, there wasn't even a mirror above the sink so shaving meant doing a dance akin to an Irish jig across the room; the decor wasn't great in general but I guess that's just a question of taste; and, worst of all, we seemed to be next to the boiler which hummed all night (as I slipped slowly into the gap inbetween the two single beds that had been cunningly disguised as a double bed).

Stayed in the Arkwright Suite which was lovely. Large bedroom with huge en suite bathroom. Roll top bath with hand held shower (no seperate shower.) Lovely views of the gardens and the hotel was in a great location. The hotel was let down by the standard of it's food. The breakfast was very poor, soggy toast, tinned fruit and a greasy cooked buffet breakfast which had been standing for ages as the eggs were like rubber. If the food improves the hotel would be above average.
