As usual I am writing this as a mature five star traveller accompanied by his wife.
We knew when we left Casa Delfino in Chania that we would be going down market in Sougia.
Sougia is a remote pebble grey beach in south west Crete.
It has a series of two star hotels along a road facing the beach. On the other side of the road there are mostly cafes then the organised beach then ocean.
It was quite busy mainly with backpackers and young families.
Dozens of campers set up at the eastern end of the beach with no apparent ablution blocks except possibly at a taverna/cafe in the camping area.
The four or five tavernas in the town were not remarkable despite rave reviews for two of them.
Santa Irene was clean ,daily housekeeping was good, staff friendly .
In the garden courtyard the effluent smell pervaded as with many hotels in this class.
We would not return to Sougia as Greece has many more attractive ,interesting locations and wonderful beaches elsewhere.
It cannot be used as a basis for exploring south west Crete due to its remote location.
