“Fabulous food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2012

My partner and I stayed here for two nights in February and we can't stop talking about how wonderful the food was! (Our next stop was a rather grand-looking hotel near Whitby and the food just could not live up to the standards set by Ian at the Queens Head.) The fresh fruit and yoghurt at breakfast was stunning, as was the cooked food which followed. The dinners are scrumptious . Lovely accommodation at the back of the pub and great views over the valley. Brilliant walking country. We shall stay longer next time!

called in on a walk with my wife for a lunch. The pub is very clean and welcoming and the smiling faces from the 2 young ladies behind the bar made the place more attractive. 2 log fires had just been lit and it would have helped if they had been lit half an hour before opening, but it soon warmed. We both had salad advertsied as "a big bowl full", a little exagerration I think. However first class ingredients were used and even though they were over £9 each we thought those were value for money especailly as 3 different types of bread were served.. Coffee was also refilled at no cost. All in all a good valued experience and we intend to return next week for an evening meal.

We have used this restaurant many times over the last few years and always found the food excellent and good value for money, particularly if you have arrived before 7.30pm and are taking advantage of the "Early Doors" menu.
Unfortunately, when we visited the restaurant on Tuesday 27th. December 2011, the service was appallingly slow. We booked a table for 8 people at 07.30pm and arrived at about 7.40pm. The bar appeared to be staffed by two young inexperienced young ladies and service at the bar was ridiculously slow and amateurish. This delayed our arrival into the restaurant. During our meal there was very little attention from the waitress staff, who seemed to be more concerned with folding napkins and chatting amongst themselves than actually "waiting on". It took ages to gain the attention of a waitress to request a jug of water and when we had finished our starter, we were left looking at the dirty plates for about fifteen minutes, until I eventually got the attention of a waitress and asked her to clear the used plates. Provision of the main course was similarly slow and this whole lack of service seriously detracted from the enjoyment of our evening.
The restaurant was not busy when we arrived, there was one table occupied by a family of eight people, who left shortly after we arrived. There was then one table of two people who arrived after us. This restaurant has a dozen or more tables, so they were clearly not busy.
When the bill of £204.30 was presented, I asked the waitress to knock off the £4.30 as a gesture of goodwill and acknowledgement of the poor service we had suffered. The waitress disappeared and one of the hotel/restaurant owners appeared. There was no hint of an apology and I was told in no uncertain terms that, we had arrived late and that, we had been slow to order and also, they had had to move tables around to accommodate our party. Well, they may have moved two tables together and set them up before we arrived, because the table we were eventually shown to was available and set up, when we arrived, but surely, restaurants frequently have to rearrange furniture to accommodate different sized parties, so I could not believe that the woman was giving me a hard time over something so stupid.
I received no acknowledgement or apology for the poor service and it was pointed out to me that "Service charge is not Included in the bill". I was so dumbfounded by the aggressive attitude of the woman, that I did pay the full amount of the bill, but I will not return to this establishment and whereas, in the past I have recommended the pub/restaurant to many people, I will now be warning people of the poor service and unhelpful attitude of the proprietor.

Ate at the Queens Head last month in a party of 4. The food was well cooked and very enjoyable (mains were lamb rump, belly pork and medallions of beef). Service attentive and friendly. Will definitely visit again when in the area.

This is the second time we have visited this hotel and its been wonderful both times, we stay in the family suite which is great as the kids can go to bed and you can stay in the lounge watching tv etc, lovely! The food was amazing, and they brought my pud to the room as our 2 year old had lost it a bit by then!
It's ideally located for the forbidden corner which is a brilliant day out!

We booked the Family Suite (aka The Warren), good sized suite with two bedrooms (1 twin & 1 double) and an adjoining lounge with two sofas, TV, DVD player etc.

Friendly staff, great food (especially breakfast) and great location for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.

Looking for an excuse to return soon.
