The Hilton Moorea Resort and Spa has to be one of the best properties I've ever been to.
The stay was fantastic and everything about the resort was near perfect. When I booked the stay, the resort was the Sheraton and I was able to book a beach bungalow with Starwood points. Prior to my arrival, I emailed to request an upgrade to over the water bungalow, which upon check-in, they informed me that they were able to upgrade me!
The transfer was arranged thru the hotel and is 600 xpf per person, per way. The hotel books it thru Toreanui Transport and it is a shared transfer. Very efficient. While I was at the Moorea airport, I used the ATM to change money (forgot at Tahiti airport). Also, I got a great baguette ham/cheese sandwich for 280 xpf, this is going to be the cheapest meal you'll have. There is a ferry from Tahiti, which I didnt know about and next time will opt for this lower cost option. The airplane carry on luggage weight limits seemed to be a non-issue. I was worried about this, my carry on weighed a ton and they put it in with the baggage without incident. The flight is less than 10 min and the ferry is 30 min.
The resort is located between Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay. The shuttle ride is scenic and very pleasant. This is an all bungalow resort with 7 direct beach access, 43 garden and 57 over the water bungalows. I have the map of the resort that I can send you if you give me your email address.
I arrived in at 10:30 am and my room was ready by noon. Check-in was speedy, I was so excited to get an over the water bungalow. I loved my bungalow, number 56. It is the first one, so it is really handy to get to and not far from the beach, restaurant, shops, etc. This bungalow also had coral directly under the glass floor, so fish were there constantly. It was very private and the deck doesn't face the beach, like some of the others.
The room was renovated and was beautiful! King bed (Sheraton Sleeper + linens), sofa which could be used as an additional bed, efficient air conditioning unit + ceiling fan, coffee maker with coffee and tea, DVD, CD and tape player, in room safe, mini bar, large bottle of water in room upon arrival, laundry service, room service, in room internet for a fee (100 xpf per minute), Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries- nice, clawfoot tub and separate rain shower and toilet, dual granite sinks, view of the water from the bathroom with electric shade for privacy, robe, clothes line for drying bathing suits, flat panel tv - only CNN in english, iron + board, hair dryer, 2 US electrical outlets, voltage adapter available and 2 snorkel set. Ice machine outside. Welcome champagne and yummy choc cookies, nice touch! I dont drink and was able to swap the champagne for extra cookies.
The room and bathroom was large and spacious. The deck was huge with 2 comfy lounge chairs, dining table and 2 chairs and enough over hang to protect you from the hot sun. Can't say enough about how much I enjoyed everything about the bungalow. The water below is very shallow and you can see the fish easily.
You will get a coupon for the spa for 20% off, and the price for a deep tissue massage will be about $130 USD. There is also free use of the steam room and sauna. And the library is also in the spa, limited selection though- more books in the Fitness Center across the street and it's open 24 hours. DVD's for rent at the reception desk for a fee, it's expensive, so bring your own- there's not alot to do at night! The tennis courts are also across the street.
Internet computers available for a fee and free Wifi at the property. The snorkeling is amazing and the best activity, the water is calm, although I should mention that the hotel did not recommend going into the water because of jellyfish. Many locals I spoke to, didnt even know about this, so I didnt pay much attention. Outrigger canoe and kayak available for free use. I brought the Aqua Sox, but never used them. The sand is like baby powder, but I am sure you can get cut on something if you are not careful.
There is a menu of Activies, Tours and Entertainment that the resort has, including jet ski, parasailing, Circle Island Tour, Tahiti Cruise, horseback riding, ATV, car rental, bike rental, deep sea fishing. I have the menu with prices and I can send it to you if you give me your email address. Albert Transport and Activities seem to be the large local company and I can send you their flyer and info also. Just wanted to note that I did not have any issues with mosquitos, but did in Bora Bora.
The beach is perfect and there were plenty of chairs with umbrella for sun protection. You are really not looking onto anything but water and the bungalows. It is very humid.
The pool is great and when I was there, it apparently was a holiday and I was surprised there were tons of families with kids.
Here's the list of what's available, but I didn't eat at any of them, so cant comment.
Eimeo Bar- great for watching the sunset, the pool table and internet computer is here.
Rotui Bar + Grill - beach side dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have the Polynesian show here on Tuesday with dinner. I was able to watch the show for free without purchasing the dinner.
Toatoa - over the water location for breakfast and dinner crepes, also Happy Hour at 5:30 pm
Arii Vahine - dinner and weekend breakfast buffet (about 2900 xpf)
I drank the tap water before they told me that I should only be drinking bottle water. I didnt get sick, but decided not to risk it and only drank bottled after that.
There is a gift shop, if you can call it that. Drinks are available, but very expensive.
Robert Wan pearl shop, right on the premises, I'm really in heaven now! Excellent quality and if you persist, hopefully, you can get them to give you a discount. Don't forget you always will get the Detaxe discount for purchases over a certain amount.
Tahia Collins store will pick you up. Her store is also very nice with high quality pearls. The prices are high and not flexible like Robert Wan, but I was able to find many items I liked here. There are other shops and restaurants at this location, that you can walk to, including a grocery store for supplies. She's give you a ride back when you are done.
Island Fashion store at Cook's Bay is not worth going to, I thought Ron Hall ( American) , the owner was rude to me, when he told me I should go to Costco when I get home to buy my pearls.
Magasin Pihaena - local grocery store is within walking distance of the hotel ( go to the right when you get to the road) and has drinks - almost 1/2 price of the resort and limited food, including baguette, ham and cheese. It's a nice walk, but you have carry back your goods, ugh.
Overall, the stay was like Heaven on Earth and I loved the resort. I had a few minor issues, telephone wasn't working properly, DVD remote battery dead, DVD player was not hooked up, coffee maker and in room safe had to be replace because they were broken, no tie on for the robe and no beach towels on the first day. The issues were resolved and the staff was friendly. I can appreciate the care and overall maintenance of the hotel. They even rake the sand, all the plants are carefully trimmed and manicured, the water is incredible and its just a wonderful resort. I almost cried when I got to Le Meridien Bora Bora, as it was a huge disappointment and all I wanted to do was go back to Hilton Moorea. I highly recommend this resort, it's amazing!

NOTE: In May 2009 , there was still some renovation going on, but it is near invisible. The workers are all inside the bungalows and it is not disruptive or apparent.
