Whilst my visit was for social and convenience purposes, I use many hotels of differing price levels in the course of my work and making comparisons between them is pretty well unavoidable.
I found this place gloomy, vastly overrated in its own apparent estimation, and overpriced. Whilst the historical aspects of the building might be of interest the general ambience, facilities, and service provided was pretty basic. A room at the top of many stairs, no lift, limited car parking, disappointing breakfast, faded room decor long overdue for repainting, primitive and limited electrical circuitry, musty-smelling bedclothes, a quaintly half-asleep receptionist (or so it seemed), a very unbusinesslike reception area, and a general lack of welcome and even of light – not good value for money, I'm afraid.
Quite a let-down, I thought.
