“Lovely place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

Great location for Kew gardens and the tube station, plenty of places to eat of an evening nearby too. We had a friendly welcome, and the room was newly renovated, clean and spacious, it accomodated our family easily. The only draw back was the occasional noise from the Heathrow flight path, but I have to say I didn't notice it after a while. We will definatly be going back. Really good value.

The Kew B&B is conveniently located a short stroll from Kew Garden (overground) Station. There are plenty of places to eat and drink near by (see my other reviews for more details of these). It is a busy mixed residential type area. There seemed to be regular buses going past. Parking is all on-street and a permit can be bought from the hotel for £1 a day (rates correct at time of my stay!) Overnight parking is free on-street.

The area is pleasant, its a fairly "leafy suburb" type place. The car dealer next door had a £108,000 Mercedes and a Bentley on his forecourt. I didn't feel the area was at all intimidating or unpleasant at night.

The hotel is a modernised B&B type place in a converted residential house. At the time of my stay the conversion seemed ongoing or at least renovations and extensions were taking place. I did not find this a problem but if you are staying in the studios at the back and it rains and you have to come in through the side gate then you would be traversing a muddy path in the dark... I would ask for a key for the front door in this case.

The accommodation is split into two. There are "rooms" which are in the main house and "studios" which are in a separate, purpose built building to the rear. The rooms in the house are about what you would expect from a B&B in terms of size and equipment. All seem to be en suite which takes up some of the room in the room itself. As a place to sleep then this is fine but there isn't a lot of space to do more. If you need that then book a studio as I did.

I had a nice airy, light, spacious studio and it only cost a few pounds extra. (Rates may vary!) I found the extra space a great bonus as I was on business and had things to attend to in the evening. There were plenty of power points to charge phones and laptops etc.

One apparent omission from the studios is that (unlike the regular rooms) you do not get a hair dryer. You do get a fancy wet room shower though!

There is also free wi-fi which worked well enough.

The room has a TV (I didn't try it) microwave, hob, fridge and sink along with some basic crockery and so on. I ate out and had breakfast in the main house but there is a small Tesco near by so you could do basic self catering if you are on a budget.

The rooms were clean and I got fresh towels and bed made up every day which is nice at this price level. My only gripe would be that some of the fit and finish appeared to have been rushed, I had a wobbly wardrobe and a lose door handle and a missing knob elsewhere. Not the end of the world and considering the owner seems to be doing all the work himself its quite understandable. Just that if he got these details 100% then it would elevate the place to five stars for me...

The hotelier was friendly and helpful. Very welcoming. Breakfast was a continental affair with cerial, toast, cold cuts, tea, coffee, etc. and was nice. Good quality meats and jam!

All in all I would recommend this B&B to anyone who needs to be in the area, I shall be staying there again on future business trips.

Room Tip: Studio rooms have more space.

Dear Customer,

Thanks for your kind and informative review!

We are adding hairdryers as a standard in all studios and rooms.

In December, we plan to upgrade the fittings, and install a new garden path.

We very much hope to see you again!

Yours faithfully,

Alastair Dobbie

We have just spent 3 nights here while attending a conference locally. The facilities were good, clean, the king size bed comfortable with new clean white bedding. The landlord was pleasant, breakfast good. The parking is in the local streets, but not a problem- permit needed Mon-Fri but this available from the landlord for £1 a day, free at weekends.Take some earplugs as its in the Heathrow flight path! However they do not fly during the night so quite quiet then. Already planning to stay again as excellent value, especially with the free parking-we have paid in excess of £50 just to park on previous visits to the area! In response to previous reviews, yes there is scaffolding, and yes you do need to ring the landlords mobile when you arrive to be let in, but this is not a problem!

Visiting London for a family wedding in July, booked what seemed a nice and convenient B&B. BIG MISTAKE. When we arrived at the B&B it initially took 15 minutes to illicit a response, not even sure we were at the right place as there was no signage only knew it was the place as recognised the house from picture on the booking site.
Scaffolding outside, which from reading other reviews since, seems to have been there for some time.
After first being shown to the ground floor bedroom we dropped of our cases and my partner's birthday gifts and headed out.
On returning a few hours later and not being able to get into the room, spoke to the staff and seemed to be interrupting a private dinner party, which felt very uncomfortable; when they couldn't open the door, they went outside and got into the room through an unlocked window. On asking how we could lock the windows, I was told that they didn't lock. But don't worry you can leave anything valuable in the office..
This is when it occurred to us that our cases and some expensive presents had been left in a room accessible by anyone off the street.
To top this they had consumed the bottle of bubbly I had asked them to keep in their fridge for me, but they said it was OK, they had replaced it with something better !!
On further inspection of the room, there was missing skirting board, bits out of the carpet and packs of flooring under the bed, in a guest room ???? and that is when we left.. and went to the Travelodge on Kew Bridge.
Oh the vagaries of not reading reviews!!!
At least they didn't have the cheek to charge us, and did not at all seem bothered when we said we were leaving, perhaps it's happened a time or to previously ..

Room Tip: If you must stay. Take a room not on the ground floor.

Dear Customer,

Thanks for your comments. We appreciate the feedback.

The faulty door lock has been replaced. The original fault was with the alignment of the door which has also been renewed.

The window lock had paint on it which was blocking its application. We have removed the paint and the windows now lock securely from the inside.

Our interior work on the room has been completed and our scaffolding is due to come down in one week, so we hope that we will be in a position to accommodate you better should you choose to visit again.

Many thanks for your review.

Faithfully yours,

Alastair Dobbie

The owner was so rude when we arrived and although we had paid Hotels.com in advance for our stay she said she had not recived it and demanded that we pay again. When I told her that I was not prepared to do that she got very angry and asked that we leave or she would call the police. She checked her computer and said that the money was received and we could now stay. We left and told her we were disgusted with her attitude.

Dear Customer,

We are always very happy to have feedback on our services so we can improve our offering.

As a local bed and breakfast we are unfortunately not in a position to take last minute bookings made after midnight.

Although we would like to accommodate all our potential guests, we are only open for new guests between 6.30 a.m. and around 11 p.m., although we are more than happy to make special arrangements for late arrivals if you email or call us in advance.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

Many thanks.

Yours faithfully,

The positives:
Close to Kew underground and half an hour from London on the Central Line
Parking - you will need to get a resident permit to allow you to park on the street between 10 -12 Mon - Fri

The niggles:
Sash windows that do not block out sound from buses and you are on the Heathrow flight path
Blinds that do not block out any light
Wi-fi signal that is barely there
Digital TV supplied via an internal plug in aerial - good luck getting ITV, once you get one channel you will have to adjust it to get the next
Bath towels - 1 each, no hand towels and no bath mat for when you get out of the shower, no toiletries.
Breakfast - don't plan for an intimate table - 8 guests have to share one table, good luck if you are last down as you will be the wrong end of the table to get anything. 1 jug of milk, 1 jug of almost empty orange, white bread if they haven't run out, having to ask other guests to pass you food, great for a family get together not when you are having a break from other people!
Cats - you need to like cats as it will be in the breakfast room with you, jumping up onto the side to drink water from the flower vases!!
Contacting the venue - they have an obscure website they advised me of called "sleep well london" on here you may find the correct contact details, not what you will find on other referral sites that they are unaware of.
King sized bed option in the family room - it does not exist even though this is why we booked along with the parking.

The frustrations:
Not only are they undergoing a loft conversion with building starting "late" at about 8:30am the property 3 doors down is also being worked on. Saturday morning at 8:15, 3 lads shouting and angle grinding paving slabs - and because the windows are as sound proof as cardboard that put pay to that lay in on our last day of holiday.

If they got the little things right in the rooms they have it would make up for some of the things they can't help until the building work is done.

Room Tip: Maybe ask for a room at the back as you will not get the road noise.
