“Excellent Pet Friendly Accomodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

My wife and I have just returned from a relaxing 3 night stay in this wonderful hotel. We booked it, as like many others, we like to share a short break with our Springer Spaniel. The hotel provides so much more than most with free car parking, dog towels, dog bowls, dog beds, good location for beach and shops and wonderfully friendly and helpful staff. The accommodation was spacious, clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were good with plenty of choice. The staff made this stay so memorable, everyone was outstanding in their customer service we will return again soon.

Room Tip: We booked room 35 on the second floor, a twin room. It was spacious with a sea view.

I have visited The Lauriston 3 times now. I go there because it is one of the few places in the area that will allow guests to bring their dogs with them. I have a wonderful pet and she likes to go into the sea and run on beaches but living in the centre of England she does not get much opportunity to do so and therefore, ever so often, we travel down to Weston for a few days of dog's holiday treat. The Lauriston not only lets you bring your dog with you but provides you with excellent facilities to help you look after them - towels to dry them with when they come back wet from a run on the beach, a special dog shower, a dedicated "relief" area, bowls for them to drink and eat from and a general air of delight at seeing your dog and letting you be able to stay there with them. The reviewer who recently had a silly moan about dog towels being available at the entrance of the hotel obviously should have read Tripadvisor before traveling and then they would not have been so snootily put out about discovering the facility when they arrived there (though they were strangely quick to write about it on Tripadvisor - clearly they prefer inflicting their own opinion on other people rather than reading what others have to say). Likewise the woman who was attending a music festival who complained a few weeks ago about not being able to stay in a bedroom for an extra fifteen minutes over time although she and her children could easily have sat in one of the pleasant sitting rooms in the hotel and consequently felt it justified to vindictively award The Lauriston just one Tripadvisor spot - if she had read Tripadvisor beforehand she would have known that she was probably an unsuitable guest for the hotel. This hotel is excellent at doing what it sets out to do. Its service to the visually impaired and disabled (and, from my point of view, the person who likes to have their dog travel with them) must be second to none. Despite the views of the music festival woman, it is extremely friendly with the staff being genuinely helpful and cheerful and interested in their guests (human and canine). Yes, some of the single rooms are quite small and the decor certainly could not be described as chic, but the price of staying there represents exceptionally good value and the atmosphere is cosy and comfortable and pleasant and happy. The rooms and public areas are kept beautifully clean by the excellent staff and the breakfasts are marvelous - a good range of choice and all freshly cooked when you are ready to eat it, much better than l have had in some of the large (and ludicrously expensive) hotels where dreadful buffets are provided. Recent reviewers have also quite rightly identified the fantastic location of the hotel - just about 30 yards from the beach (and it just happens to be the section which has year-long access for dogs) and a couple of minutes walk from the pier and the shops in the town centre. Recent reviews have provided readers with a good illustration of who is going to appreciate staying at The Lauriston, personally I would have said almost everyone but clearly if you are dog towel-phobic or find it hard to understand why it is not be possible to occupy rooms after the advertised time of departure or if you want Hilton-style facilities even though you are paying a fifth or a tenth of Hilton-style prices, then The Lauriston is not for you. I don't suppose they will miss you since the hotel is usually booked a long way ahead by all the people who are going back again having experienced the marvelous and good value hospitality that the hotel provides. My repeat visits convince me that not only is the place excellent but it is consistently excellent. Really it deserves special recognition for its service to the visually and physically disabled and Weston council ought to give it a special award for the way it attracts so many visitors to Weston, particularly those whose needs are not so well addressed by other hotels. If you have stayed there and feel you have something to moan about then I suggest the problem is more to do with you than with the hotel.

My wife and I have stayed here twice and have booked to go back in January. This hotel definitely ticks the right boxes. Firstly nice big car park, so no fees. Location is 20 yards from the beach and a five minute walk to all the shops. Hotel rooms are spacious with en suite and staff friendly. Breakfast was very nice and nice little bar area for a quiet drink. Already looking forward to staying there again.

Room Tip: Sea view would be nice

September 17th with a Nottingham disablement group travelling with Rhodes, spent a most satisfying 5 days here. The bedrooms are spacious and adequately fitted with sufficient disablement equipment. Walk-ins showers, bathrooms, all are available. The food was extensive and varied, whilst the staff all seemed to have a smile for everyone.(One exception was the catering manager who had a permanent forlorn look, I thought I had made him smile but a member of staff assured me that it would be passing wind.) The decor is good. It was first opened for blind people. The only down side was the evening entertainment, which was mundane.

Room Tip: There is a lift to all floors, with a disabled lift to all the specialist bedrooms.

Hotel was very friendly and at £80 a night (through a late rooms type website), was good value. It's well equipped for the blind and obviously gets a lot of customers this way. Parking is a problem though as its limited for the size of the hotel so try and arrive early. There is additional parking out the back but if spaces are taken, it's difficult to reverse out all the way to the road. Good selection at breakfast too

The hotel was very difficult to find as there was only a small sign at the roadside. Parking was also very limited. At the hotel entrance there are two signs saying something like, " used Dog Towels" and "clean Dog Towels". Hmmm, not a good start! Met by helpful friendly reception chap. Our twin room was very dated and had an overall grubby feel to it.. A cross between a butlins/YMCA type set up. Very small TV with no Channel 5? Only the person on 1 of the beds could see the TV as the other bed was round a corner.
A black toilet seat!!! Shower was dreadful as it trickled a tiddle of water only.
Breakfast was efficient and tasty.
The whole building was geared for the elderly with handrails, braill etc everywhere but probably not for anyone under 60.

The Lauriston is part of 'Action for the Blind' and has many guests with sight impairment. The place is fantastically adapted to cater for people with sight impairment and the staff are good at helping as much as they need to. The outside of the building looks as though it could do with a bit of renovation and the inside need a little care and attention. Our double room was small and was a little cramped for space with two chairs and a small dresser as well as the queen size bed. The bathroom was disappointing. The shower fitting was not really fit for purpose, the basin was cracked and the bath had some mould around the edge. The paintwork was flaking on the window sill, the extractor fan broken, the bath surround coming away and the flooring curling up at one edge. The over-basin shaver light didn't work and the fixtures were all a little outdated. You get the picture. Breakfast was reasonably good with a fair selection of cereals and cooked options. The bar was well used by the guests, but be wary, we were served a shot of Baileys but the bottle must have open for some years, it was a disgusting colour and we left it on the bar. The staff didn't seem to notice/care and we didn't elaborate. Parking at the front was OK and the place is well located close to the main street and within a short distance of the pier. We were in a room towards the sea and there was some road noise and what seemed to be refrigeration noise from the nearby Old Thatch restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the sea would be quieter.
