The Learney Arms Hotel was recommended to us by some friends as a perfect place for a short break with our Children. As a party of four adults, a 12 year old, 10 year old and a five year old we wondered how we could occupy them but we needn't have worried. The owners Murray, his wife Sandra and their daughter Hannah were lovely. The children played together the whole time and nothing was too much trouble.
My husband and I had room 5 which was beautiful. Huge Victorian sash windows and a four poster bed with sumptuous bedding. The bathroom was surprisingly large and had a bath, shower, toilet and sink and another huge sash window.
The whole hotel is beautiful with high ceilings with intricate cornice and high skirting boards. Real attention has been paid to maintain the original features of this historic hotel.
Being situated in the centre of a small village was perfect as you had essential amenities (Chemist, small supermarket, bakery, butcher, park, cash machine) very close and also all the local people visit the hotel either to eat or have a quiet drink. We made lots of friends!
We had breakfast which was excellent and the staff catered for our fussy children without any trouble at all. We ate lunch one day and the same standard applied. One night we ate dinner and had steak with whiskey sauce, well, what can I say! It was just gorgeous.
The owners helped us plan our days out and suggested things to do, we went to The Falls of Feugh where you can see the salmon jumping back up the river. This was only about a 20 minute drive from the hotel.
Balmoral was another trip suggested to us which was just stunning and about a 40 minute drive from the hotel through the most pituresque scenery, it was awe inspiring.
Horse riding, fishing, walking, museums and castles, the list is endless in the area.
I disliked the fact that this was only classed as a two star hotel and enquired abut the reason for this with the owners. Apparently because it is such an old building, they have two rooms which cannot possibly have en-suite bathrooms, but each one does have their own private bathroom directly across the hall from them. This means they cannot be classed any higher than a two star which might put people off booking, but trust me, we have been all over the world in high star hotels and this is certainly one of the loveliest we have ever stayed in. We will definitely be returning soon.
Please see the photos I put on and make this a stop in your itinerary!!
