“Self Catering apartments in the grounds of the hotel”

We searched very hard for a nice self catering cottage or apartment close to Aberdeen.
The location was important as we were catching the overnight ferry to Shetland on the Friday evening and we wanted to be fairly close.
After much searching and emailing the only one I could find, that was available for the days we needed, were the converted stables in the grounds of the Reamoir House Hotel.

Now if you read the relevant page on the hotel web site they read very nicely.... Not so I am afraid.....not so at all.

One starts by driving up what has been refered to as the 'drive' up to the hotel... This is full of pot holes - some very deep - impossible to drive up and miss them as they are on both sides of the track... This may seem a small point but this drive is really horrible more a mud track.... there is nothing whatsoever attractive about it. There are felled trees and very rough woodlands either side of the pot holed drive.

Anyway we get to reception and I go in and look for someone and eventually find a young member of staff. I introduce myself and he finds a key and says to drive over to the 'cottages' behind the hotel.
We do this and he walks over and unlocks the door, hands me the key - I say is there anything I should know? - he answers that he has never been in the cottages and knows nothing about them!
Ok well he leaves and in we go.... what a dreadfull disappointment.
The place is grotty ( good word that) -
Threadbare carpets,
Window frames half repaired and half painted ( see photos)
Very poor quality furnishings. 1 small sofa bed & 1 chair - positively uncomfortable
Very spartan and basic cane furniture - really poor.
The doors & windows thin boxwood difficult to open & close.
At best this place could only be described as 'adequet' and that is being kind. The surface mounted electrics & plumbing were unsightly and not very nice.
The decor was basic and bland a few very faded cheap prints on the walls.
It was also dirty, very dirty, cobwebs everywhere, squashed flies & spiders on the walls & windows, the fridge was very smelly (stinking actually). There was nothing.... nothing at all to assist with cleaning not even any washing up liquid. We have stayed at many Self Catering places but never had one so empty of anything, usually there are odds & ends of useful items if only left by previous guests. But here there was nothing.
The list goes on - but I think you get the picture.

So strictly speaking this is not a review of the hotel.
If you want peace, quiet, a relaxing break this location is Ok.
Not great but Ok.
It is a couple of miles off the main road from Banchory.
We will of course never be going back...

“Enjoyed my visit”

Raemoir House Hotel

It is a nice quiet location about 3 miles from the small town of Banchory. At first I was somewhat disappointed in the room but after staying in the comfortable bed with nice soft sheets and the windows open every night to silence and cool clean air I changed my mind. I stayed 3 nights for a conference; the food was always hot and I thought the dinners were very good. The staff was young, nice looking and smiling whenever I ask for extra fruit, more water or really anything else. There is a trail that goes above the town with very panoramic views about 1 hour walk out. The hotel has a nice deck if the sun is shining and a sitting room and bar area to hang out. If you are looking for lots of activies this might not be the location but I would definitely head back for at least one night during a second trip to this area.

I stayed in this hotel in Feb 08, and is was terrible from start to finish.

The place appeared to be extremely understaffed and when you did see a staff member the just couldn't be bothered with you, and were extremely rude!

On complaining, the manager argued with me and was in fact quite arrogant. So much for the customer is always right.

The room I stayed in was clean, but very small and not at all what you would expect for the high price charged.

The breakfast was absolutely awful, food was cold, dirty glasses and plates, and unhelpful staff yet again.

It was in fact so bad that I didn't stay for dinner and moved hotels into nearby Banchory.

Unfortunately the service did not match the lovely exterior of this place, and was very disappointing. I've received better service in a Travelodge!!

Set in beautiful surroundings and looks fantastic as you make your way up the long drive. Unfortunately that’s where the pleasure ends. I wasn’t made to feel comfortable on arrival and the room was so small and decorated only to queen Victoria’s taste. The Breakfast was so bad that I decided not to eat there, although it is quite a way out from any where else so expect a good drive for dinner. I’m afraid this hotel is charging for the overheads not the quality of service.
