“How to show up Aberdeen!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

Enjoyed a lovely, informal, family dinner outing this evening, in a restaurant miles ahead of anything on offer in Aberdeen City, for all its oil wealth. The menu both innovative and substantial as ever - tonight featuring a wonderful, South African spicy beef/lamb mince main - together with the excellent friendly service, with the details just right: from the heated plates to the well matched wine at the right temperatures. All of that complemented by the picture window views across the Dee valley, which even the new Tesco in the middle ground doesn't spoil by virtue of an architecture that far exceeds the usual fare. Clearly, a great team at work here: congrats!

“Delicious food, beautiful setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

Buchanans is in a beautiful setting, just on the eastern edge of Banchory with lovely views to the hills and wonderful sunsets if you time your visit right. If you are looking for traditional cooking, you may be disappointed but if you are looking for fresh, interesting food positively zinging with different flavours and textures, then you will love Buchanans. You won't find tired panninis or whatever and chips at lunch or the ubiquitous duck breast in a rich sauce at dinner but rather interesting combinations of meat, vegetables, cheeses, salads and pulses served by friendly staff. The wine list never disappoints and I've had possibly the most delicious dessert wine ever here - sadly I can't remember what it was called but they will! And the desserts are lovely too!
Buchanans is linked to Woodend Barn, an interesting arts venue with a varied programme of music, theatre, film and dance and a small art gallery. Check out what's on and combine your evening meal with a live performance, we have seen the creme de la creme of musicians play here in this intimate setting.
The combination of Buchanans and Woodend Barn make for a very good night out and rivals anything you will find in the urban centres of Scotland.

“Absolutely faultless ......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

...my wife and I went for supper here on Friday night. This place is a real gem. From the time you set foot in the restaurant you receive wonderful service from the efficient staff who are polite and friendly.
The food is out of this world and the starter of smoked fish platter is both different and very tasty. We then both had the salmon which was cooked to perfection and like nothing you have ever tasted and finished off. with the almond and blueberry tart served with homemade pistachio ice cream. Well worth waiting for...
All in all a wonderful evening......will be back very soon.

“Fantastic food, great value too”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012 via mobile

Really excellent meal here last night with 5 friends. Had a very yummy platter of smoked and cured fish, followed by a stuffed roasted aubergine, and chocolate mousse to finish. All of it brilliant, and excellent value for money. Will be back!

“Hidden Gems in the heart of Deeside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

Looking through the reviews of the Buchannan Bistro next to the Woodend Barn I was a little skeptical - tales of small quantities and poor service did not fill me with confidence.

However, despite the experience of others I found this to be a very enjoyable experience. I went with family for a special anniversary meal was all three of us found it a delightful experience.

The is a bit of a quirky restaurant with no "set" menu, but with the chefs making up a selection of specials each night of the week - so you might get a delight one evening, but the following evening they will offer something else!

Two of us opted for the Fish Board, which comprised of a generous amount of several different types of fish - 3 types of salmon, anchovies, herring, etc - very satisfying. The Tagliatelle could perhaps have benefited from being slightly warmer.

The main courses were Organic Chicken, Salmon, and Beef Casserole. All three were delightful and eagerly consumed.

I had the Cheese plate which offered two very generous portions of brie and a blue gloucester.
I was surprised at another reviewer suggesting the nearby Tescos offered more of a sample - as any more would have overfaced me.

A very nice cup of coffee. A very nice experience. Hope to visit again. The price of £17.00 for 2 courses and £20.50 for 3 was very reasonable,
