“Kids loved it, needs some investment, quite remote”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here with our two childrens aged 3 and 4. They absolutely love it. Farmer nick or farmer Kim meets you at 9am each morning snd the little ones ride in the tractor trailor while the parents walk alongside. You then visit a range of what is more like their pets than an actual farm e.g two pigs, two donkeys, some chickens and a number of goats. This was perfect for the children!
This was the reason we booked snd the best part of our stay.
We stated in Two Chimneys which was a stone cottage. It was nice enough but certainly requires updating especially in the bathroom (shower awful and rail held up with rusty chain). That said it had all the amenities you need with a younge family.
One thing I didn't like (city girl!) is quite how remote u are!!! You really do need to take a tesco shop with you as the nearest supermarket is 30mins drive and my vision of country pub dinners was a fantasy! It's pretty much on the moor!!!
One thing I will mention is that the toddler outdoor play area is awful and I'd say quite dangerous! Old little tikes toys covered in algae with some questionable worms on and sharp broken plastic in windows of play houses... If I were them I'd shut that bit down as it just gives a bad impression... The indoor soft play however is excellent.
My personsl fave bit was the bunnies, loads if them all ready for cuddles! Of and alpacas outside the bedroom window!
One other dodgy bit is the 'train ride'. It's a small electric train which the owners children drive round and your children can have a ride. My little girl was sat waiting for a ride on the first day, the young boy sat on and started it zooming and I nearly had a fit!!!! Ended up chasing it and getting her off!!! Would like to know if that's even legal!!!!
All in all a good stay for the little ones but I wouldn't return.

i cant disagree with the review below enough. we have just returned from our second stay at coombe mill. both times we have stayed in a scandanavian lodge which has been perfect in every way. however i have personally seen/been into all the other accomodation and they are all lovely. riverside lodges ARE small, and old but description on website lets you know this before you book.
we find fiona and the nick the owners so friendly and helpful. them and their children are always around if you need help/advice. you see them aroumd and they are available if you need them but they are not intrusive.farmer nick and farmer kim gave the kids great educational info each day on the feed run. even us parents found they could answer any questions we had!
the feed run picks all the kids up in a tractor and then we spend a good 90 mins feeding and learning about the animals. besides the feed run coombe mill is just an idylic place to be. lots of play areas for the kids and you are welcome to go back and see/feed the animals whenever you want.
theres also bbqs to borrow, picnic tables dotted around and the surroundings are just beautiful and peaceful. the reception/shop has lovely frozen meals to buy, home cooked by fiona and lots of toys/wellies etc to borrow and a wealth of tourist info.
i honestly adore this place. anyone with young children should give it at go!

We arrived from surrey on the sat we had minimal welcome to our 1950's themed cabin, that theme continued throughout the week with little or no contact with the owners apart from feeding time in the morning which is described as a farm on the website but in reality is a glorified petting zoo with a few animals, no education for the kids just throw a bit of food at chicken's feed some twigs to goat's job done. There are no other facilities to keep you or the kids entertained other than some questionable health and safety play areas. The budget accommodation is expensive for what you get and quite dangerous for little ones with things falling off, uncovered heaters. And patio that contains a table that nobody can fit round, the couple mention in their pack they previously worked in advertising this showed as nothing on website lived up to expectations in real life.

Our website contains my own non professional photos which most say undersell the beauty of the place. The riverside lodges are described as basic, there are photos of every room, unedited by me as I really don't an't to over sell them. We are applying for planning permission to change them all to Scandinavian lodges from next year. There is nothing on the website to suggest we provide any more entertainment than the morning tractor rides (and the afternoon train rides from summer 2013).

Just home from a weeks hols. Our second visit to Coombe mill. Our 2 girls had the best time- aged 19months and 3.5 years. We all enjoyed the feed run in the mornings with Farmer Nick or Farmer Kim. Both are lovely with the children and make sure everyone has a turn driving the tractor, finding the chicken eggs, holding the baby chick, bottle feeding the lambs or whatever else there is to be done. Fiona also lovely, helpful and knowledgeable with hints and tips for the local area including beaches etc. Accommodation was very clean and perfect for our needs and family size. We have stayed in a riverside lodge previously and they are described on the website accurately. They are basic and functional. This time we went for more space and stone built for more warmth and creature comforts and booked a cottage- two chimneys.
My two little ones enjoyed the play areas on the farm and we would revisit the animals in the evening pre or post tea to round off the days activities.
Hengar manor up the road is great for swimming at a reasonable fee. There's an Italian restaurant at Hengar too. Fabulous food. Great service and really friendly staff. Childrens portion are massive and mine shared one meal easily.
Lovely holiday. Would like our next visit to be with the grandparents too. They will love it as much as we do!!

If you have young children and want to holiday in the UK then this is the place. Some amazing beaches within just 30mins Polzeath, Daymer Bay, Rock, Padstow and many more. A fantastic base to explore North Cornwall.

We have been coming since my eldest daughter was 3mths old and each year Nick and Fiona have made improvements, slowly but surely the riverside lodges are being replaced by Scandinavian Lodges, we spent our first 4 visits in the riverside lodges which were adequate for our needs and fantastic value with two small children. We now have older children, 10 and 8 and a dog too so the Scandinavian lodges are perfect and very modern with a fab garden area for the dog. The feed run is always great fun, although I did feel a spare part with the children now wanting to explore with their friends, which meant I managed to get up a little later :-). Incredibly lucky this time with lots of older children, which meant that our children made instant friendships and spent a lot of time exploring and in the river(as did the dog). I would and always do recommend this to my friends.

We had a fantastic time at Coombe Mill, my 2yr old son in particular loved the morning feed run in the tractor. Weather wasn't great when we visited but we made use of the soft play barn on site and still visited the beach even on the drizzly days (kids don't care) although it did mean we made use of the laundry more regularly than we had planned. Cornwall is a beautiful place and if you have young kids, Coombe Mill is the perfect base for you to explore with enough to keep the kids occupied so much so we're thinking of returning this year!!

Room Tip: The riverside lodges, although budget, are a little dated, better to opt for one of the cottages or...

This was our second visit to Coombe Mill with our 3 children aged 15, 7 and 7 months. We came back to Coombe at this time of year following a superb time previously in this idyllic hamlet. We stayed in one of the log cabins which was well-maintained, clean and spacious with all the equipment you would expect for a self-catering trip to a working farm. Whilst there is a relatively small number of animals, there is a good range and they are well looked after, providing a great chance for younger ones to experience farm animals close up. The morning farm feed-runs on the tractor are always relaxed, informative and fun. There are plenty of facilities on site and Reception hosts a wide range of resources you can borrow to help keep the family entertained. Going off-peak is not a problem as the site is peaceful and quiet evenings in front of the log-burner is just what you need to wind down. The owners and staff are friendly and interested in their guests-we can't wait to visit again.

Room Tip: We like the log cabins of which the are 2 sizes-spacious, modern, well-equipped and comfortable with...
