We stayed at Shrigley Hall on a Friday night on a dinner bed and breakfast basis in a "superior" room. We kooked it through the Paramount hotels website. The hotel is attractive and elegant, our room was lovely and quietly situated at the very back corner of the hotel. It really wasn't that far to walk. From what I saw of the standard rooms when we walked past it is worth paying the extra for a better room, the standard ones are quite small.

The food was of an excellent standard but the service was slow. There were a couple of weddings on when we stayed, I think the kitchen was overstretched. This hotel has extended it's accommodation beyond the capacity of the dining facilities, there was even a queue for tables at breakfast.

I had a spa day the following day (which is situated in the church attached to the hotel). The treatments were great and the gym is well equipped. The pool area is looking a little tired, I went about five years ago and not much had changed. If you read the folder in the health club you will know to avoid room 211 if you don't like sharing your bedroom with presences that try to strangle you in the night! :-o

I would recommend this hotel, they need to tweak the dining experience, we were also seated in an area off the main dining area which was draughty and lacked ambiance. Most of the bigger parties were placed in that area, as a couple we found the laughing and guffawing a bit off putting and would have preferred a table in the main dining room so it's worth asking for that when you book a table (Our table was booked 3 weeks in advance too).

  • Liked — Elegant decor
  • Disliked — Draughty ancillary dining room area!

My husband and I recently stayed at Shrigly hall for 2 nights for a wedding.Approach to the Hotel is impressive with great views.Limited parking at the front so had to be dropped off only 2 or 3 space allocated to the disabled which were full.Entrance Hall and staircase are magnificent so I was really looking forward to a stay in a luxury Hotel. This is where the problems started.
Checking in was very busy, long line of guests arriving staff seemed rather stressed only 2 staff to check in not nearly enough for numbers arriving..Over all staff were variable some very helpful some indifferent.Eventually we were given room 134 and were taken by a very helpful porter up the lift and then out of the original building into the new part of the Hotel. This was quite a long walk and involved several small flights of stairs.I have some mobility problems and walk with a stick and when booking had checked that there was a lift to all floors and that access on the floors was level. This was not the case. The room was a bit shabby, gloomy and the bathroom needed an upgrade.Lovely toiletries.
The parents of the Bride an Groom had arranged an evening buffet.Food was delayed by an hour and a half with no real explanation for the delay, there was no one who seemed to be in charge. The Rissoto was stodgy and over cooked although I understand Lasagne was good.
Bars prices were high and service at the bar slow, due to lack of staff.
The wedding was lovely, food and service at the reception very good although there were still problems. On leaving the ceremony and entering the courtyard we were greeted by tables full of dirty plates and glasses which were attracting wasps. Also broken glass on the floor.Yet again not enough staff.
I understand that a viral illness affecting both staff and guests was the cause for some of the problems but feel that communication needs to be improved, the hotel needs to be freshened up and guests need to know that they are likely to have long walks along badly signed corridors to rooms in a new wing and will not get the luxury they had expected.
Pool area is small but i had an enjoyable swim, more disinterested staff here so took awhile to find changing area. One needs to sit on floor of Jaccuzzi in order to be covered by the water.
Check out on Sunday was chaotic with staff needing to sort out loads of problems and disgruntled guests.I had signed for the express check out so was able to drop keys into a box and leave quickly as our bill was very straight forward.
We had an enjoyable weekend but there is scope for much Improvement in both the Hotel and staff management. Not the wall to wall luxury I had expected and paid for.

booked in for spa weekend

welcome at reception - indifferent

allocated room 145 - shabby, smelt damp, mould on ceiling, cracked tiles in bathroom etc contacted reception and were
re-allocated to room 248 - much much better (next to lift but did not hear it in use at all).

spa facilites could do with updating but staff very welcoming and helpful - charlotte was just lovely

dinner in restaurant - asparagus wellover cooked, chicken cordon bleu ok - partner ordered scallops for main course - more of a starter ( 5 scallops and 5 roast potatoes) piped music was oppresive rather than relaxing - staff were very courteous and efficient - atmosphere very stilted

breakfast was fine - plenty of variety

overall - staff fine, facilities shabby - plenty of room for improvement

Stayed 2 nights for wedding recently, expected a very special time
given the price charged. Wedding fine and dandy but here's a few negatives to consider :

1. So the place is big but that means a confused trek along a maze of undulating corridors, up one floor in the lift, more corridors, up another floor in a tatty and rattling lift.
2. Bathroom smelly (shower curtain) and towel dryer rail not working. Told it had been " disabled because it gets hot " (??) So had to re-use damp towels.
3. Charged £ 17 for a basic bottle of white wine. (4 times the price of a bottle of my usual nice Asda stuff ) When I ordered 2 pints of beer was told " it's around the £6 mark I think " It's like the bar staff make up the prices as they go along.
4. A friend was charged over £7 for a large glass of red (they only had one size of glass and guessed where the medium and large sizes came up to "
5. Old portable TV in our cramped room was hopeless - at least the reception at the wedding was good ...
6. Whenever it rained, water dripped into the room, the ceiling was damp with paint flaking off the wet patch. This was reported but nothing done.
7. Heard other stories of extortionate bar/food prices and people being given mouldy rooms on arrival etc etc ....

Sorry to be Mr. Grumpy but these bad points did take away the promise of a luxury stay at a " 4 star " hotel. I believe thay have a nice golf course (maintained by the bar/food profits ??)

But at least the breakfast was good .... so ... enjoy !

hmmm .....

Our room was set back behind the main building a good five minuets walk away in a 1970‘s complex that bared no relation to the impressive grandeur of the reception and main building . The main hall ways are narrow and dimly lit, we had to remember to avoid standing under a leaking sewer pipe from within the ceiling while waiting for the lift. The fowl water was dripping on the carpet, no one had thought about catching it in a bucket, obviously awaiting a plumber..The room itself was dull, unimaginative, and tatty and judging by the ware and tear still had its original furnishings.

The room was located in the roof space with a sloping ceiling, instead of an attractive dormer window the architect had opted for an ugly Velux window (badly damaged) that had not been cleaned in months. It was hard to pick out the view of the car park through the grime and dirt on both side of the window. I resisted the temptation to clean it myself but it soon became obvious that the window could not be cleaned by anyone as it had just two positions, closed or nearly closed. The room smelt as those someone had just died and been masked with cheap air freshener. The carpets where tatty and stained. The wallpaper torn in places.

After seeing the room, I quickly cancelled the dinner reservation as it was obvious I had mistakenly assumed 4 stars mean high quality. I was also annoyed that while the reception were keen to book new guests in for an evening meal they did not have a menu. A quick look at the bar menu includes a burger (at £12), fish and chips, curry , etc at which point you realise that none of it will be cooked fresh to order, just microwaved and cut out of the packet to order.

My advice would be if you are looking for a hotel, don’t consider this one.
