“Family Wedding 10th-11th May”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

Quite a crowd of us stayed here and I thought the hotel staff were very good under the circumstances i.e. a large number of people arriving almost all at the same time. It was possibly the manager who welcomed us and he was very calm and unflappable, charming in fact.
I think there might have been problems over the number of people at the evening meal before the wedding as we all wanted to eat together and this had been agreed but again it would have caused added stress for the chef.
We loved our room, very small, fabulous views and clean and comfortable.I do agree with a previous review that the barman lacked people skills , but the other staff were warm and friendly .
We would definitely go back !

Room Tip: Rooms in the front but higher up are less expensive but comfortable and still with fabulous view

Agree with Gourmond77 - having been told by staff that we could not reserve a table in the bar, lo and behold on the evening of 25th May when we turned up, most of the tables had reserved signs on them! Bar man looked like he had a hangover and clearly didn't want to be there - at one point, he said quite loudly "I can't serve any f.....ing drinks as there's no f...ing clean glasses". He was also less than helpful regarding food delivery - when asked when food was being served from, he said (with a laugh) "it's from 6 p.m., but you'll be lucky". Not feeling full of confidence that we would actually get any food we left.
We've eaten there many times before and had great experiences - the operation clearly lacks direction and leadership - management need to get their act together.

The Penhelig Arms was voted one of the best fish restaurants in the uk when privately owned - now as good as the staff try the whole operation is run under chaos and panic - one chef for 60 covers - one hour wait for our main course !!!!! - no consistency one night a very good rump of lamb the next tasteless overcooked steak - This hotel is a fantastic location indeed one of the best in the uk - our bedroom was spacious, very well appointed and with very good views but the underfloor heating in the bathroom was so hot your feet would burn if did not wear shoes .The crazy thing was as all the staff were new - no one could turn down the heating or switch it off ! We would stay again due to the location and a new manager was being recruited and promised support to the head and only chef ! .

Room Tip: If you go when cold make sure the under floor heating can be adjusted or switched off .

My 15th visit was not the best . Room 6 is small but ok but paint is falling off of the radiator andthe shower bulb that was broken last visit still not replaced. The food choice and quality have bothdeclined (starter choice one night eg pea soup or 3 pate/terrines)Staff although mainly new were very friendly and helpful however The breakfasts were good but the hotel was very quiet apart from our group as was the bar which is normally buzzing. Views over the estuary are superb and the overall location is perfect but the WOW factor has dis appeared since the family who owned this facility sold out 3 or 4 years ago

Room Tip: Not room 6 Pay more for Bodhelig i suggest

I stayed here with two visitors from abroad and we all found it to be a pleasant experience. The bedrooms are very well appointed and clean. Sea view rooms are especially pleasant. The building is old and with character but has been renovated where appropriate. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was excellent with a wide choice. I note there are a few comments on carparking but Aberdovey is a small village: with just a little forethought this is not a problem. There are plenty of spaces very close if the carpark opposite the hotel is full. The terrace area to the rear and side of the hotel is a wonderful facility, affording excellent views over the estuary. I will stay there again.

Room Tip: Sea view would be good if available.

Four of us fad a two day break here. The rooms were small but comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. We had two evening meals, one in the restaurant and on in the bar. The food in both was of a high standard and very good value for money. The breakfasts were also very good. We had intended eating one meal at the Dyfi Inn but even though it was Saturday night in a tourist area they stopped serving at eight o clock. At the time we were annoyed but in the end we had a better meal in the Penhelig.
Th hotel has a new staff and manager and they have made a big difference to a hotel that had a few problems in the past. I would not hesitate to recommend a stay or a meal to anyone.

Stayed one night a Penhelig Arms and was shown to room 3 which was beautiful. A lovely big room which included seating arranged to show off the view of the bay through the window. The bed was really comfortable and the large bathroom a delight. Excellent meal in the bar that evening and a very comfortable sleep in the large bed. Breakfast was excellent and the staff very helpful. Many thanks!
