“A superb meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

We went for our second visit last night after a wonderful meal a few years ago. We were not disappointed the second time around. We were advised that we would be the only ones dining, but that wasn't a problem - there was French music playing (until the iPod froze) and the hostess and chef made small talk in between courses. Our meals were delicious, with the filet of beef being cooked rare to perfection. The cheese board was more than sufficient and would have served 2. My recommendation to all, though, is the frogs legs. They were the main reason we went back and were as scrumptious as the first time I tried them. Overall a very enjoyable evening with a friendly atmosphere.

“French Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

The French food is to die for a gem of a restaurant. The stay at the hotel was made really fantastic due to the owners and the food which was excellent so much so I wanted to stay just for the food. Many thanks

“Wedding anniversary meal.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

Lovely setting for an intimate meal. Food was delicious and the portions were huge. Couldn't finish either the starter or the main and had no room for dessert.

“A hidden gem that should be on full display”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

Raudins is named after the Chef/Proprietor Danielle Raudin, a Frenchman who came to live in Hartlepool for love. It sits in a small hotel - the York Hotel - in the town centre, but for all it's location Danielle (or Daniel as Hartlepudlians know him) ensures exclusivity, discouraging walk-ins by having the front door closed.

The restaurant itself is in the best French fine-dining tradition: crisp linen tablecloths in rooms with high-ceilinged grandeur and glass doors, proper ironed linen napkins not paper serviettes.

One enters by ringing the doorbell and is met by Mrs R, or Katie. Katie is a real character (as a good maitre'd should be) and incredibly efficient, managing the bar and tables on our visits, even though on one occasion we were 12, with seeming effortless ease.

The menu is largely (and unsurprisingly) French - the proper French, not overblown nouveau cuisine. Our parties tried just about everything amongst us, including escargots, and whether fish or fowl, everything arrives perfectly presented and tasting even better.

Until the end of the meal Danielle is not seen - he does after all have to cook the stuff. Eventually though he emerges from his kitchen in chef's whites complete with hat, looking exactly like a fine-dining French chef should look.

Prices are in line with other good restaurants in the town, which makes Raudins incredibly good value.

If you haven't been you really need to go - soon!
