I went here for the first time last night for a birthday meal and she had her heart set on this place.
I was debating writing an honest review for fear of perhaps being a little too harsh but after reading some of the reviews I feel I will just be honest.
The service could have been much, much, better. In fact, other than one other thing, the service is probably the only thing to let it down.
As others have mentioned, it took a very long time between our drinks order coming and someone coming to take our orders, but we did actually book in advance. The restaurant had more empty tables than taken ones and we clocked 4-5 members of staff so it was not busy.
My sister was happy with her potato skins starter. I had the pate. The toast was on the burnt side and was actually hard and it was so coated in garlic that I couldn't even taste the generous amount of pate I spread onto it. It was tasty so I let it go.
My main (I just had to have a parmo when I saw it) was actually great and I really enjoyed it. My sister also really enjoyed her steak.
The interior is lovely. I really like the wood effects and colour scheme.
As others have mentioned, it is sandwiched between arcades, although I do believe they are owned by the same people/company. We observed a number of members of staff going next door (not really proof I know), but we later spent an hour in that arcade. We saw a chef and a waitress from the restaurant coming out of a staff room thing in the arcade. It's not really a problem, other than that the arcade machines ripped us off and the staff simply implied we were lying. It would be annoying if you were seated by the door joining the two.
I felt, compared to all of the other restaurants I have been to, that the wine was overpriced. I felt that for what you got in terms of quality, portion size and service (which is important), that the prices were £2-3 higher than needed.
One other thing, service related, which annoyed me, we didn't have the right change for the bill. I like to pay for the bill, then give the 10% after we have been given some change or just as a final 'thanks, goodbye' thing. We put in something daft like 45p more in because we had no change. They just kept it and never brought the change. A tiny amount yes, but I wouldn't expect for it to just be banked without asking. At one stage our plates were removed by someone who never said a word, no 'are you finished' or 'was it ok for you?' she just came over, took them and left silently.
So, long story short:
- Food was for the most part really good, other than the minor issue.
- The service was terrible.
- I think, personally, that the arcade owns the restaurant (I've not looked into it so I'm happy to hold my hands up and say sorry I'm wrong).
- The decor and interior is lovely.
For me, personally, service is extremely important. As it was poor here on my first visit, and as it may potentially be linked to the arcade in which I had an awful experience, I will not be back unfortunately.
