I have stayed at the Holiday Inn Maidstone Sevenoaks on numerous occasions due to work commitments in the area. I must say that my experiences on each occasion a very hit and miss.
The location of the hotel is ideal for exploring Kent and is within reasonable distance of London, and major motorways.
The outside of the hotel appears smart with nice gardens and looks very appealing. Inside the reception area is clean and welcoming.
Unfortunately the rest of the hotel does not meet these standards unless you get an executive room. The standard rooms are clean and spacious but they are quite worn and dated and are coming to the point were a refurbishment wouldn’t go a miss. Certainly new carpets and a lick of paint are required. The same has to be said of the bathrooms which again are quite grubby and are showing their age.
Having had the good fortune to stay in an executive room, I can say that they are a total contrast. The executive rooms are large, comfortable and look newly fitted. In addition there is a mini bar and complimentary safe. They are much more near the standards that I would expect from a £100 + per night hotel.
Even then however these rooms don’t compete with other hotels such as the City Inn. The television channels are limited and Internet access is charged at an extortionate £15 per day or £75 per week! I find this outrageous particularly as people travelling on business need Internet access.
The service provided by the staff also varies. All staff are friendly and helpful although some of the service can be poor. I have had over the last four months numerous issues over a room allowance. Some saying I have pay for certain things others saying not so. Why can’t someone ensure that staff communicate with each other and read the booking forms!!
I have used the resteraunt and found that to be very poor value for money. An average main course is £16+ and is OK but not worth that much! For example I ordered a Tuna Steak which was tiny with a portion of chips. This just seemed such a rip off. I feel sorry for tourists who have to pay these crazy prices. So that’s £100 for a room + £15 for Internet access + about £30 for a three course meal so basically £145 per night + £4+ a drink. I’m sorry but I think the Holiday Inn are just going too far with their prices. But in saying that if no-one objects this will just continue.
Breakfast is a buffet with a good variety of cereals, fruit, pastries and fried breakfast. It’s best to go early as between 8.00-9.00 there are too many people for the limited staff to cope. At this point you will find tables that have not been cleared, a lack of bowls and no tea/coffee being served. If you go half an hour earlier the service is excellent! I think this is the case of the hotel trying to run as cheaply as possible with minimum staff.
I also managed to use both the Gym and swimming pool and this is pretty good. My only advice here would be to avoid it between 5.00-6.00 as there are too many people and you cannot get on the equipment.
Overall this hotel can bee good or poor it really depends on whether you, get an executive room, use the gym out of hours and eat breakfast early. If you can manage this then you will have a good stay!
