We visited the Midland Hotel on Friday 31st October for Afternoon Tea.
For some reason, afternoon tea is only served in the Rotunda Bar. This is all very well, but some of the stools and tables are literally only a couple of feet high (if that). The other alternative is to perch on high bar stools with equally high tables, or at the bar. If you take your elderly relative for afternoon tea, (or if there are more than two of you) you would have no alternative but to sit in one of the booths just outside the bar, which are very dark with no view whatsoever. Not exactly the setting one would expect for afternoon tea.
We arrived at the Hotel at 2.45. We were told that afternoon tea was served between 3pm and 5pm. Because the tables in the bar were so low (you are almost squatting) we first sat in one of the booths. We found the table to be dirty and covered in crumbs, and as there was no view except that of the bar, we moved to one of the higher bar tables and high stools.
The table was clean, although on looking down under the table, the floor was absolutely filthy. There was an large accumulation of crumbs and hairs, which led me to believe that nobody had cleaned under there for several weeks at least! The plastic table number which stands on the table was also filthy.
The food arrived reasonably quickly, and although not the best I have had, it was better that I had expected - 7/10.
Would I go back - probably not.
