“Lovely, generous and friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

This was our second visit, this time with our son and his vegan girlfriend, over new year. We had a lovely relaxing time despite the weather. Log fires in the public rooms, spacious warm well equipped bedrooms (we stayed in the Breakaway Rooms, which are lovely), this was relaxing. We were especially impressed by the vegan menus created each night, and specially printed for our vegan. Food and service were excellent and friendly.

Arrived on Christmas Eve to a warm and friendly welcome, explored the lovely town of Pickering and then just ate exceptionally good food for the next three days. The staff were all helpful and attentive and made the stay feel very special. Stayed in a vintage double, tastefully decorated and well appointed. The information booklet had very humorous comments and had us in stitches (a must read). Would thoroughly recommend to anyone and hope to return soon.

This white painted hotel in the centre of James Herriot country, a step from the North York Moors, a steam railway and the coast, offers the traveller a genial place of watering and dining. We have been here often; in the bar and in the restaurant and always felt cosseted by the retro feel, friendliness of staff and more than acceptable food and wines.
You pass through an arch from the main street and become enveloped in a relaxing 'away from home' ambience where you can forget your problems and look forward to being truly looked after. A moment from the shops, if you stay there, you can browse contentedly in scarcely altered Pickering with its antiques and bakeries. With walking, railway and beach not too far away, what could be better for a day out, holiday stay than the White Swan in Pickering?

A short break for my wife and I in N. Yorkshire. We really could not have chosen better than the White Swan. The hotel is lovely; traditional and thoughtfully decorated, with no sense of a "chain" hotel. Right in the village/town centre, which we like. The staff could not have been more personable and friendly, without overdoing it. Rooms are either in the main building or in an annex across the car park.
I would recommend it to anyone. Pickering is well worth a visit, lots to see in typical not-overdone Yorkshire fashion.

We booked a hideaway retreat slightly away from the main hotel for my wife's birthday. The staff offered a warm welcome & escorted us to our room which was spotlessly clean. A big ground floor shower room, a seperate huge room with a bath big enough for two & a large upstairs bedroom. The hotel had left us a complimentary bottle of bubbly & a birthday card in our room. The breakfasts were hearty, well presented and endless tea or coffee freely offered. We chose to eat away from the hotel on our first night & can thoroughly recommend the fish & chip restaurant a few doors down the street, pretty basic but superb value for money meals.
Easy distance for the coast & beautiful surrounding countryside. Our 2nd night we chose to eat a meal in the restaurant we took drinks in the bar by a log fire whilst we selected our meals. We discussed wine choice with the waiter & boy was it tasty. The meal was fantastic, I had a pot of ginger pig as starter, go try it........Our mains were veg allotment pie & pork chop, both were extremely tasty & well cooked. We don't usually have 3 courses but couldn't resist the lemon tart & cheeseboard. An excellent attentive evening. The Bothy is a delightful addition & a comfy place for a coffee, drink or private function.
We would thoroughly recommend this establishment, the service is 2nd to none.

Room Tip: Retreats are delightful

We called in for lunch whilst visiting the area to see the Roger Albert Clark rally in November. We were greeted by friendly staff who provided a water bowl for our Airedale Terrier 'Branston' who delighted in occupying the rug in front of a cosy open fire & only stirred when our delicious food arrived. We returned the following afternoon & repeated the experience. It is a pleasure to find such a quality dog friendly establishment.

We made the trip north for this year's reunion and stayed at the White Swan Inn as recommended by our hosts.

We were greeted by a friendly and helpful receptionist and just had time to drop our bags and go out on a walking tour of the town, part of our planned entertainments. On returning to our room we found it to be comfortable and well equipped with tea and coffee making equipment neatly tucked in one of the cupboards, a modern flat screen TV and a DVD player (which was hidden in another cupboard), a large bathroom with lovely toiletries and a heated towel rail and good sized towels (they passed the 'towel test'!!)

The bed was large and comfy with a feather quilt and an extra wool blanket in case it was needed (it wasn't, our room was the perfect temperature, something it isn't in some hotels!). The curtains and bed cushions were in matching, white swan design fabric and heavily lined - perfect for a restful night, another thing many hotels miss out.

After a good day out to York dinner for our group was in the Bothy, a converted outbuilding, which was perfect for the gathering. The food was excellent, the staff fantastic and a good time was had by all.

There were a couple of niggles with the room which I passed on to the hotel and I received a very prompt response to say that they will deal with them.

All in all a very pleasant stay and we would certainly return to the White Swan if we go to Pickering again.
