“Fab Family Holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

I have just returned from a 4 night break at Tanzy Cottage, after reading the reviews I was very worried but I have to say we have had a wonderful stay. We arrived to find the keys in the door and some money in the meter for electricity which I have to say was quite cost effective considering we had the hearing on majority of the time. The 3 bedroomed cottage was immaculate, the beds were so comfortable and clean, the hot tub was brilliant and hot enough to use on our first night and again very clean. We had a problem with the kettle not working, we rang to report this and someone came to replace it within 15 mins. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and will be returning again.

This is the second time we have been to Tantara , this time I made the mistake and read the reviews before we went (stopped in the large cottage last time ) and wa dreading it ! But there was no reason for the doubt...... Clean , clean crisp bedding, hot tub clean and hot, had a problem with the heating the the lady was there within minutes. Had a lovely walk and found the park perfect for our 4year old. Had. Very Happy Halloween x thanx we will be back :)

What a wonderful quiet relaxing place to stay. Have just spent the weekend in Tantara lodge with some friends and found the whole experience very relaxing. Although the log cabin was old and in need of a little TLC it certainly didn't spoil the weekend. The cabin and furnishings were adequate and clean, evenings were spent in the hotub relaxing and although it was the middle of October it was surprisingly warm. We left the log cabin at the end of our stay with much reluctance and will certainly be booking again next year . What a wonderful relaxing weekend which was much needed by all in our party .

My husband and I booked the Tantara lodge last minute. We had not read the reviews so went with an open mind. The location is fantastic, off the main road but close to Pickering and the surrounding attractions. The lodges are fairly close together but not overlooked by each other or the main farmhouse.
I agree with the previous reviewers that the lodge could just do with some TLC and it could be luxurious. There are some nice finishes; light switches and plug sockets are chrome, the rooms are good sizes and like I say the location is great. But the whole lodge could just do with a good clean and some welcoming touches. There was nothing in the lodge, toilet roll, kitchen towel, salt and pepper, washing up liquid etc. Previous occupants must leave these...we certainly did so why not leave them for the next guests? There was four of everything, knives, forks, spoons, glasses etc which was fine for the two of us but if there were four of you it would get a bit annoying and frustrating having to continually wash up. The bedding was ok, clean and fresh but old and tired, nothing better than crisp bedding to feel luxurious.
We were fine because there was only my husband and I but I wouldn't want to have a baby crawling around and despite a small play area and a very dodgy games room there didn't appear to be a lot for an older child to do either.
We spent our days walking and discovering the area then back to the lodge for a well deserved hot tub soak and few hours of TV and off to bed. The signal for BBC was awful and kept distorting the image.
The hot tub was fantastic, ours was definitely clean. We couldn't use the hot tub on the first day because the water was not warm enough, this is as advised so we were not upset. However the following morning the hot tub was still at 31 degrees which was too cold to sit it. We rang Jenny on the mobile number in the welcome pack and she advised it may be on economy mode, she would come and fix it within 20 minutes. An hour later we left the lodge for the day and Jenny still hadn't been but when we returned that evening the hot tub was up to 40 degrees......lovely and relaxing....just what you need after a days walking. Over the 4 days we were there the hot tub did get the occasional leaf and insect and what looked like sand in the bottom so the fact that these were not in the tub when we arrived confirms it was definitely cleaned for our arrival.
As a base for adult walkers who want comfortable accommodation to return to after a days walking with the added benefit of a hot tub, Tantara lodges are fine but a few tweaks by the owners could have them fantastic!

Upon our "EARLY" arrival we were greated by whom we presume was the owner of Tantara Woodland and his first joyful words of greeting to us was "Your Early". My wife myself and our two friends stayed in Tarragon Cottage which was a lovely snug cottage, the master bedroom was huge with plenty of wardrobe space. The second bedroom was not as nice with no wardrobe or cupboards to but any clothing,so we had to live out of our suitcases. The main living room/kitchen was well equipped but you needed a degree to phathom out how to work the hob, we eventually found the instructions tucked away in a drawer. The Hot tub was brilliant all four of us stayed in this for hours and it was not on the meter. We stayed for 3 days and we only used £6 on the meter. Now the important bit customer service all I can say it was none existent so be prepared, I knocked on the farm building door as there is no reception to let them know we were leaving on the Sunday morning a day early as our party had to be back at work Monday morning but there was no reply. Overall we had a great stay apart from these little issues which if acted & improved upon our or your stay in this cottage would be fantastic.

My husband and I booked a week's stay at Tawny Owl Cottage. We were apprehensive to start with having read mixed reviews on Trip Advisor. On my husband's suggestion we came armed with spare bed sheets, pillow cases, and bleach.

Overall, the accommodation was pretty basic, very dark (several lights not working) and unclean (smelly fridge, mouldy kitchen bin, dusty etc.), but we spent the majority of time going for long walks in the Moors, so we focused on the positives (the hot tub) and tried to ignore the dirt.

On day 6 of 7 of our holiday, we returned to the cottage at about 4.30pm to find there was no power. My husband rang the three telephone numbers in the guestbook and no one answered. He then knocked on the door of the farm house and it appeared that no one was in. We then spoke to other guests who were in the same position-left in limbo wondering what was going on.

About an hour later a young girl called Jenny arrived and informed us that the transformer was broken and that we could not be accommodated. She explained that they had to prioritise re-accommodating families with babies and advised us that we should try to find alternative accommodation at our own expense. We initially tried to do this using our phones but the internet signal was very bad so decided it would be quicker to go into Pickering town to make door to door enquires. I spoke to five guesthouses who confirmed that they could not accommodate us for two nights, I was informed that it was particularly busy, because of a car rally that was being hosted in the area.

We got hold of a hotel in Goathland with availability for two nights (at over twice the price of Tantara £120 per night), reserved a room, and made our way back to the cottage. We contacted Hoseasons who informed us that they had also been ringing places on our behalf, but they could not get hold of anywhere for two nights. We were informed that provided we vacated our room we were entitled to a refund of £48.75 per night.

As we had spent just over an hour making enquiries and liaising with Hoseasons, by the time we had found the hotel in Goathland and returned to Tantara it was 7 pm. The cottage was so dark that despite our best efforts we could not pack up our belongings. We were left with no choice but to stay the night with no power or running water (Including a non-flushing toilet). We contacted Jenny and explained the position we were left in.

We got up first thing in the morning, packed by candlelight and left the cottage. We both felt really dirty on the way home as we were unshowered and couldn't even brush our teeth. We tried to see the funny side of it but we were then advised by Hoseasons that as we had stayed the night in the cottage, the owner was not prepared to issue compensation for that night. We have been promised a measly £60 compensation for night 7 and had our holiday cut short early. The attitude of Hoseasons and Tantara Woodland was pretty despicable - we were even accused of lying by Hoseasons. Why would we lie? We were only asking for a refund for both nights, which in the circumstances I am of the opinion is reasonable.

Think twice before booking, and ask yourself whether the hot tub is really worth it.

On arrival we were disappointed as the outside of the cabin was dirty and very scruffy looking, the hotub was enclosed on all four sides with rickety peeling fencing. The lighting was poor and the hotub itself was swarming with slugs and didn't give off a very clean impression. The temperature was 40 which was far too hot to enjoy, that teamed with all other factors simply meant it was barely used.
The inside of the lodge was dark, dull, damp and dusty. The walls were filthy, full of dust and cobwebs, as were the Lino floors, stairs, windows and all other surfaces! It was that bad my asthmatic bf felt this on his chest and my mums allergies flared up.
The carpets were all lifting up, stained and grubby, the rugs looked like they needed throwing away. The lighting was poor, many bulbs broken and insufficient which made the entire lodge very dark and dull.
The TV got hardly any reception and the freeview box didn't work. The beds were lumpy, springs clearly broken and very uncomfortable. The bed linen was worn and old and smelt ever so slightly of smoke. The lack of suitable wardrobe space, no hangers and insufficient storage teamed with very bad lighting, dust dust dust and filthy windows made for a very difficult stay.
The bathroom had no shelving or areas to put stuff on, the bath leaked all over the floor but the water was hot...whilst it lasted.
The kitchen was ill equipped. There were 4 of 'everything' but all were mega cheap and mismatched and not even clean! The oven was filthy not that you could cook anything on it because there were no baking trays. The kettle worked if you kept your finger on the switch which was fun. There was no light on the extractor hood which may sound petty but the whole place was so dark it meant you simply couldn't see! The hanging fire alarm was also a treat.
These are no way luxury in any way shape or form, they are the lower end of basic and that's if you don't mind living in filth.
We approached the owners within 30 minutes of arrival to explain how dusty and dirty it was to be told that she would get a cleaner to sort it the following morning, failing that she would do it herself. Needless to say that didn't happen.
The next time we saw her was on our 4th day when we were told that the generator had blown up and there was no electricity and we would have to leave! She did say that she was trying to sort alternative accommodation but everywhere was booked up so to call hoseasons. She said we could sort it ourselves or go home then expressed that she needed to sort out where she was staying!
All in all a bitterly disappointing break that left us astonished that hoseasons are still endorsing this place! I think a 'mystery shopper' visit is in order and a complete overhaul and deep clean!!
