I went to Pontypridd to visit family and was surprised by the number of new restaurants that have opened recently. With new competition, you'd think established eateries would be pulling out all the stops but this was not the case with this "gastro pub" when I visited recently.
You enter through the bar which is nice enough with workmen enoying after-work beers. All friendly.
The bar menu was quite run-of-the-mill (chicken, curry, Welsh rarebit and cheeseboard!) I chose fish and chips and my cousin chose Thai curry. My cousin said the curry was tasty but not special and the consistency was too thin for his liking. My fish and chips was bland and looked strange - the fish was angular, almost like a breeze block (only much, much smaller) and was accompanied by similarly-shaped chips. The meal looked like Lego. There was no other accompaniment apart from a small portion of "home made" tartare sauce which didn't taste home made.
The waitress wasn't exactly friendly and we were rather cold.
All in all, rather bland and disappointing - I have since had better food in Sainsbury's cafe!
