The owners are friendly and make you feel at home. The breakfast

would definitely stay at the Castlecroft again.

Positives: The hostess was cheerful, enthusiastic, and friendly. The location is great. It's a short walk over a hill (by road or path) to the gates of Stirling Castle, and the town of Stirling. We walked it at night on our way to dinner and found it eerily beautiful to walk past an ancient graveyard by the floodlights of the historic castle.
The breakfast was good, although we'd been spoiled by a phenomenal one elsewhere.
The beds were comfortable and the room was clean, and warm.
Less positives: It didn't have the charm of some other B&Bs. Not much in terms of decor-- sort of a 60s house with tired 70s decor. Think open stairs like on the Brady Bunch. It needs a general update-- hollow, shaky, wooden sliding door to the bathroom, and not much water pressure. It felt a bit like we were staying in a spare room in someone's house, with the family wandering about, which was a bit odd.
Note-- these are new owners (approx 9 months) so best to check back and see what they've done with it.
Bud and I loved it. Fantastic, very romantic, a little bit spooky on top of the mountain, very old cemetary there. Gorgeous view. Miss you!!!

This was truly a "home from home" experience. The basics, of course, are here: clean rooms, a hearty breakfast, and amenities that meet or exceed what one would expect from a 3-star (Scottish tourist board) accommodation. What really distinguishes Castlecroft is the friendly & endearing hospitality of its owners and the wonderful setting beside the castle and facing the Grampians. Having breakfasts cooked-to-order is an added plus. Observing the variety of age groups and languages spoken in the dining room each morning, it was clear that Castlecroft has established a broad appeal.
Guests without their own cars do have to do a little more walking than those who stay closer to the city centre, but the walks are decidedly pleasant along the base of the castle, beside the grassy mounds of the Kings Knot (a great place to stroll, let the kids play, or simply watch the sun setting over the hills).
My family & I arrived without a car, a cell phone, or a computer and had our trip shuffled around by the airport disruptions of Aug 10, so we were probably "needier" than the average guests. Yet, nothing ever seemed too much trouble for our hosts. We would enthusiastically recommend Castlecroft to anyone visiting Stirling.
A practical note: At first glance, Castlecroft may appear less than ideal for those with limited mobility, and the location does favor those who enjoy a bit of walking. There are rooms on the ground entrance level, however, and a motorized chair on the stairway, so if this is a concern, you might check with the owners rather than assume your needs could not be accommodated.

As of August 2006, Roger and Frances have only been owners for three months, but everything runs like clockwork and they have lots of local knowledge. All rooms are en suite (i.e., toilet, sink and shower in the room). They also have 24/7 guest Internet access, and a large selection of books, videotapes and DVDs.
Our downstairs room was spacious and opened onto a semi-private patio. By looking up, we could see the backside of Stirling Castle, which is a 10-minute walk up and around the hill.
For travellers with mobility issues, there is an automated staircase assist device. I didn't see it used while I was there, so please confirm the details. There is also a separate entrance on the downstairs room level and plenty of on-site parking.
Finally, they have a lanky wolfhound-like dog and a cute little kitty. Both are great pets, and I mention them only in case there are readers with allergies.
We had a great time and would definitely stay there again.
