“Lovely old hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

This was an extremely difficult hotel, and itsaccompanying carpark, to find. A lovely old hotel built in the mid 1700's. We had a nice big spacious room with two televisions, one in front of the beds and one in front of the cough. No view to speak of though.

We recently held a family birthday party in the ballroom for 200 plus guests which was simply fabulous. We cannot thank the staff enough and in particular June, Harold, Darrell and Gordon who worked with us to make our wishes come true. A number of our guests stayed overnight and were highly impressed with the bedrooms and breakfast. A super venue for any celebration - the hotel has undergone a major refurbishment and the ballroom is elegant and beautifully decorated. Thanks to all staff who made this a night to remember.

I organised an overnight stay at the Golden Lion for my Dad's 70th birthday. I booked 5 rooms, (3 doubles and 2 family) by phone direct with the hotel and got a great rate for Dinner Bed & Breakfast. The reception were friendly and helpful, all the rooms were clean, spacious and nicely furnished. We visited Stirling Castle during the day which was great! The guides are really enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I would recommend a visit. We had dinner at the hotel and two friends also joined us. The meal was great and the waiting staff were excellent, attentive without being overbearing. They organised the cake and looked after us all night. Thanks to all the staff at the hotel, you made my Dad's birthday a very special event.

Room Tip: The hotel is in the city centre so views are limited, but I stayed in Room 446 which has a view over...

We were just strolling around Stirling with nothing better to do and fancied a coffee. The coffee shop we went into were serving people coffee and cakes but there was no where to sit so we moved on. The Golden Lion was warm, with the most comfy leather sofa that if you were not carefull you would land up lying down! It was run in a very old fashioned way which was reassuring and extremely pleant and professional. We were given our order and enjoyed sitting in tranquility for half an hour. We got a very pleasant bill at the end of it and was well chuffed. We will be back.

Once we'd decided on a cuppy and cake, we went looking at the trendy coffee shops - some corporate, some independent ones. They had queues and music and no seats. This was not the case in the Golden Lion. We were offered two huuuuuuge sofas to recline on while we were served coffee and a plate of cakes (5 no less). There were people in the bar and the restaurant, but the atmosphere was cosy and welcoming. The plasma TV wasn't even that loud. For £6.95 we know we wouldn't have had that luxury in another manic coffee shop, so thanks.

On checking in we were met by the lovely receptionist Joanne who was lovely and extremely helpful. We had not arranged for dinner but requested to be upgraded to dinner bed and breakfast this was not a problem and was very reasonable considering it was a three course meal. Our room was huge, they had given us a family room which was great because it was next to my mothers which was a disabled room. Good thinking to have family close very thoughtful. Will definitely stay here again, access to town terrific.

Stayed for 2 nights on a DBB deal, fast and efficient check in, lovely clean room on 3rd floor although shower temperature a bit dodgy.
Dinner 1st night was excellent, quick and attentive service, breakfast on the 1st morning was also excellent, lots of choice and attentive staff.
However dinner on the 2nd night was bad, service was very slow and it was not totally packed yes it was a bit busier than the Friday but they should know how many are booked in and have the appropriate staff to cover. it took over 2 hours to have a 3 course meal, the staff seemed to be all over the place but not getting anything done. Think the problem was really in the kitchen and the waiting staff had to deal with this. When main course did arrive it was awful (Roast Beef). We did complain and the Irish restaurant manager(sorry did not get his name) was wonderful about it we got complimentary drinks by way of apology also we were not charged for our extras. Breakfast next day was bad, seemed to be lack of staff and lack of food available in the self service trays which resulted in people waiting about. All in all not too bad a stay very good bar and drinks not at all expensive also handy for town centre. Had to give it very good as the staff were lovely and the 1st night was good. Would probably stay again.
