“40th Birthday celebrations - great venue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

I stayed here with five friends for two nights bed and breakfast for a 40th birthday event over a Monday and Tuesday night in September. The staff were very helpful and the rooms were just what you needed. Plenty of space and very clean. You even got complimentary bottles of water along with the usual tea and coffee with biscuits. We were also given bathrobes and slippers in the room. The hotel supplied a lovely bottle of wine and chocolates for the birthday girl. Our room backed on to an area that had construction work happening, but this didn't affect our stay and was very unobtrusive. Breakfast was adequate with the usual food on offer. My only grumble was that the plates were hidden in a hot unit, with no sign to say they were in there or that they would be hot. You could easily burn yourself. The layout of the hotel was a bit of a maze and there is one floor that you cannot directly get to in the lift, which was not ideal for one of our party who was not so mobile. Not a place to stay if you are not mobile, as it is situated on a very steep hill. Overall a great place to stay, but not for the less agile.

Room Tip: If you are not mobile, make sure you ask for a room that the lift stops on. p.s give the whisky shop...

We stayed here for my husband's birthday on a "dine, stay and sparkle" deal and it was brilliant. We opted for a premium room so we could get the late 2pm checkout. The room was spacious, attractive with a nice, clean, decent size bathroom and our sparkling wine was chilling on the table when we arrived. The hotel leisure complex is great with very modern exercise equipment and a pool. We ate in the restaurant, Scholars, which was great (see separate review) and nothing was too much trouble. There was a mix up with reception who had us down for a 1pm check-out on the Sunday, but when I spoke to Nicole on reception to explain their website said 2pm check out for the offer we'd purchased, she immediately changed it with no problem. We had a fab time at this hotel and hope to return for another stay in the future.

This was a short break which we had waited a long time for. We were delighted with the surroundings ( even though there was building work beside the hotel, we never heard a thing and it never detracted at all from the overall experience. The service from every member of staff was excellent - friendly and efficient. Restaurant staff were knowledgeable about the dishes too which helped.
We had a standard room overlooking the courtyard which, for a short break, was fine.
We had a busy schedule so didn't have time to use the leisure facilities but that's made us determined to return to this hotel.
definitely recommend it to others

My son & I stayed at the hotel as he was going to an open day at Stirling University. In short great hotel with fantastic leisure complex, comfortable clean room and excellent breakfast. What more could one want.

Stayed at this hotel in October for a conference. It is well located in the older part of Stirling and very convienent for those visiting the historic sites. I walked from the station so came through the side entrance by the whisky shop and then the maze of stairs and corridors to the main reception area. The staff were warm and welcoming. My rtoom was a ground floor one along the a long annex. I walked it and it was freezing, I noticed the oldish window had not been properly shut, so resolved that issue. The room had all the standard services within it, clean, but the overall feel was a touch tired and the shower was weak on the pressure. The wifi while free (for a limited MB use) was sluggish and i could not connect to my work system which was a frustration. Had a drink in the bar in the evening and again the staff and service was fine. Breakfast was fine and a good range of food. Not an exceptional hotel but a reasonable rate and not any major issues with it.

we recently stayed at this hotel, which we have done many times in the past, as it is very handy for the town centre restaurants and pubs. When we checked in we were given room 327,which turned out to be suffering from a noise problem coming from the adjacent pool plant-room equipment. We contacted reception and were moved to room 304 at the other end of the hotel. That was fine but why did they try to give us a room that they must have know was suffering from noise? This was not a good start. We had a lovely night in Stirling city centre and returned to the hotel at 11:00pm. We were then wakened around 01:30am by the hotel fire alarm. Everybody came out of their rooms and we eventually congregated in the central car park. it took about 15 minutes for one of the staff to stop the alarm system while we waiting for the fire brigade to arrive. After about 40 minutes, one of the staff let everybody back into the hotel. Still no fire brigade! We were told by one of the staff that It appeared the alarm was set off by somebody attending a function in the hotel, who probably thought it would be a good laugh.
This does not really matter, the big question is why did the fire brigade did not attend the scene, they are only approx. six minutes away. They should have been there long before the hotel found the cause of the alarm. If it was the case that the hotel contacted the fire brigade to say is was under control, the fire brigade should still have attended site to double check that there was not actually a fire at the same time. This is one of the worst cases of breaching health and safety as many people's lives could have been at risk. At about 04:00 in the morning, we know the time as we hardly slept after this episode, a note was slipped under the door from the Manager saying that he apologised for the inconvenience. Is that it? We never said anything about our ruined night when we were checking out but warned the girl at the reception to be prepared for a lot of unhappy customers. We are actually booked into this hotel again between Xmas and the New Year for two nights and can only hope we get a good nights sleep next time.

Room Tip: Stay away from the rooms at the far end of the hotel until they sort out the noise problem.

The location was excellent, and parking was easy, which was a huge plus. The room was spacious and clean, and we found most of the staff helpful. Had some difficulty finding a place to have a drink in the afternoon, after a long drive, but got sorted out eventually. Staffing in the bar seemed minimal, but perhaps that was the time of day. Hotel has an interesting history, and certainly feels like a Victorian School. An interesting experience.
