“Going downhill rapidly”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

When we arrived the car park was almost empty and I initially thought the place was closed. however, we met our friends and ordered lunch. When the roast turkey arrived there was so much gravy you could have mistaken it for soup. The gravy was very salty and the turkey tasteless. The stuffing was completely missing and when queried we were told "it isn't cooked yet, do you want a Yorkshire pudding instead?" No apology when the food was delivered that there had been an error, I assume it was thought we wouldn't notice. There was no rocket for the salads and the coffee machine was broken. The (young and inexperienced) waitresses did make the best of a bad job however and no criticism can be levelled against them. A waiter though showed complete disinterest when told that cash payment had been left on the table.

The last time I was here, about 18 months ago, the car park was full and all the tables occupied, this time an almost empty car park and few patrons. I think that says it all.

“Shortage of staff caused long delays, but overall a great place...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013 via mobile

Smiley welcome, but just waved us off to find our own table, which is fine by me as we chose a table tucked in a favourite corner, but the table hadn't been cleaned down, and we then realised that the waiting staff were thin on the ground. Having been before, and noting a worrying number of other tables still holding menus and looking around for a waiter, we nipped up & ordered at the till, which proved to be a smart move! There were several things unavailable (one main was not even spotted as we ordered, so we had to choose again later). There was no Prosecco, but the alternative (Pinot) was not the "special" so we missed out on a £5-off offer... The couple nearby had already been waiting for an hour..! We waited 45mins for 3 delightful dishes. The lamb was nicely caramelised on the outside, and tender, but for "medium" could have been a little pinker. The warm salad that it was served on was scrummy & a generous serving. It was the Kitchen Staff that then started getting the dishes out and spreading apologies with charm....Think the Head Chef was instrumental in this move, and he really pulled out the stops to calm customers and regain goodwill. It seems that they had all new & inexperienced staff out front, and one no-show simply meant they were overwhelmed. We were not in a hurry, so although slightly irritating, the overall experience was good. Completed the on-line survey for them too. Great team - so long as they get their act together....

“Good value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Have not visited this restaurant for several years and was very pleasantly surprised at the range and quality of food. The staff are very pleasant and friendly. I had Venison Pie for main course which was excellent and would recommend this dish. l

“3 hours for cold food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

We arranged a meal for a business group. 14 people with an appropriate booking to support a group this large. When we arrived at half six, the car park was mostly empty. Maybe 4 to 6 other patrons. We were seated promptly and given menus. Drink service was prompt on the first round. Then we ordered starters and mains. Starters took over 45 minutes to arrive. The food was cold to warm. Nothing was hot. You would think the mains would follow right behind, but you would be wrong. Mains took an additional 45 minutes, at which point we almost up and left. 3 of the pies were cold in the center, and the fish in the fish and chips plate was overcooked to the point you had to hammer it apart to eat. Honestly, this is a lovely inn, but the food is below average and the service and attention to detail is missing. The drinks were fine if that is your intention...otherwise there are too many better locations in Horley to find. Our suggestion is to PASS on this.
