“Overall a very enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

A party of 9 of us occupying 5 rooms stayed here over the Easter weekend for a 40th Birthday celebration. The hotel staff were very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. The communication before, during and afterwards was excellent. The hotel boasts the most incredible views of rolling hills and the setting and backdrop is a real asset to the hotel. We ate in the hotel's restaurant and it was good. The fresh vegetables were nicely cooked and plentiful. The dining room light and airy and in contrast the bar and lounge cosy with a fab roaring open fire. Great for huddling around while we had a few drinks and played cards! A great location for visiting Durham. Equally great for walking and cycling. We visited the nearby Hamsterley forest which is a good location for mountain biking or walking. The hotel is charming and characterful. Loved the fluffy towels. We were on a KGB deal and it was value for money. A bit of investment on minor renovations would be beneficial to the hotel. Thanks to Laura, Samantha, Christine, David & chef (sorry didn't get his name) for looking after us all and making the stay an enjoyable one.

Me and my husband spent two nights at the hotel with a Kgb voucher. The room was lovely with a four poster bed and a the view was amazing and very beautiful. The bathroom however was in need of some work around the shower base not very nice, the first morning my husband got a shower when it came to my turn there was no hot water! I left the dirty towel in the bath as requested if you wanted a clean one it was never replaced I went to reception and asked for another one to be sent up but it never arrived! So we had to share one bath towel.I didnt rate the food in the restaurant at all quite poor and felt like it had been microwaved,I also thought the £5 supplement for a full english a rip off! I appreciate it was thick snow out side but i must admit the restaurant was so cold! I ended up having to wear my husbands thick jumper to dinner! On the plus side the Hotel is situated in a most beautiful part of the country and found the staff lovely.

Went on a KGB deal and was a bit nervous after reading reviews but I was very pleased when I arrived. The view was amazing, bed comfortable and lovely fluffy towels. Plenty of hot water and the staff were excellent and very friendly. I can understand why people may have said it was tired but this did not make a difference to our stay. We had dinner at the Hotel which was good but the evening spent in the Hotel lounge/ bar was brilliant. Very cosy and very relaxing. We have signed up for e-mail news and after receiving our first one today I will be booking again. Beautiful part of the world to visit.

First the good points -
Pleasant, helpful, friendly, efficient staff.
Fab location and views from the back of the house.
Comfortable, spacious lounge bar.
Good food at breakfast and dinner - although £5 extra to pay for full english breakfast.
Lovely historical building.
Pleasantly warm.
Plenty of very hot water to fill the fairly new, deep, wide bath.
Potentially lovely grounds.

Things that need to be improved:
1. Most urgently - a good clean. Our room was really grubby and the bathroom positively awful with black mould and mildew in the corners and on the tiles, likewise the bedroom windowsill. The bedroom smelled of cigarettes and dogs. There were cigarette ends all over the entrance roof below our window.

2. Maintenance:
The shower in our bathroom was hanging off the wall bar and couldn't be positioned so that water went in the right direction. It leaked from both the handset and the control. It was impossible to get a shower - there was no water pressure.
There was a puddle of water behind the toilet which never cleared - whether from the loo, the shower or the bath I couldn't say.
The window fasten was hanging off.
The bedroom wallpaper was dirty and had holes where items had been removed. The wallpaper was hanging off in places too.
Dogs had chewed 2 of the plastic coathangers in the wardrobe.
There were tiles missing from the roof and in places there had been water ingress and the ceilings were crumbling in the upstairs corridor.
The garden was so untidy - I would have loved a pair of secateurs and a leaf rake!

3. Attention to detail:
No decaff coffee in the bedroom. When I asked - they didn't have any in sachets. In their position I would have offered a cup of decaff coffee from downstairs.
An unemptied, magnificent fireplace in the lounge. On a very cold night - the atmosphere would have improved 100% if it had been lit.
Lots of out of date leaflets in the information boxes in the reception area.

Overall? Such a waste of potential. We will never go back to stay overnight, though we might call in for a meal if we were passing.

Room Tip: rear rooms have wonderful views.

booked this deal as it was incredibly cheap! hotel was a bit dated and in need of a bit of tlc but was better than expected for the price so was not disappointed. views were beautiful. staff were very pleasant and helpful. continental breakfast was included in the price and you could upgrade to a full english for a fiver, which we did, not bad but was swimming in grease a bit more than i would like. quite funny that the staff at breakfast asked in 'hushed' tones if people were with KGB! bit of a drawback was getting a taxi (midweek, late pm) and was ripped off by 1 taxi driver but then found 1 by the name of Paul's taxi's who was very reasonable and pleasant. overall, enjoyable break!

We couldn't believe the price of the 2 night KGB deal but were dreading it after reading the reviews and wished we had read them before booking. Yes, it is in need of some TLC. We booked a double room and were put in the Teasdale which was 2 singles pushed together but it didn't make any difference and the view certainly made up for it especially when it snowed. The room was a decent size and could do with being re-decorated. There was Lots of hot water and towels and bedding were clean and crisp. Shower cubicle could do with re-grouting around the base but the bath, sink and toilet were fine. There weren't a lot of staff on hand but the ones that were couldn't have been more helpful and polite. We upgraded to the 'full English' as mentioned on the voucher and it was worth every penny. We only ate in the restaurant one evening which was fine although the room could have been a little warmer. The hotel could do with sensor lights outside for anyone coming in late which we recommended to the staff. Overall a great few days in a lovely part of the country and would visit again.

What a pleasant experience it was staying at this hotel. Yes, there were lots of things you could find fault with but they were only minor things. Overall it was a really nice place, the staff went out of their way to be helpful, Sam and Laura were the two that we had the pleasure of dealing with. When we arrived I requested a " room with THE view" unfortunately these were all occupied, however the second day the Lunedale was vacant and we were able to move into it, glad we did because the scenery was pretty amazing. We would definitely recommend this if ever asked for our opinion.after reading a comment posted we went to the Bay Horse in Wolsingham for a meal, unfortunately they were not cooking that night, however the new landlady organised some bar food for us AND wouldn't accept payment for it, that's what you call hospitality !!
