“Friendly and well located hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

Stayed here for two nights ealier this month. The hotel was very quiet, and we upgraded to the wedding suite. Lovely room, lovely view, warm and comfortable, slightly let down by some minor repairs and cleaning in the bathroom.

Staff were very helpful and friendly, and indeed, the chef varied the menu one evening to accommodate a request which we didnt think he could or would. The food was excellent and very good value

The area is very pleasant, and scenery up Weardale outstanding

We used a KGB voucher to stay for B&B on the 6thDecember2012.We arrived in the dark and we new we had been allocated a twin room at the front of the hotel without a view.We were pleasantly surprised with our room which was well decorated, comfortable beds and hot water for the bath. The shower was disappointing but I was assured this will be remedied. We booked for dinner and there were 6 of us eating that night. The meal was excellent and the service was also excellent. All the staff were extremely friendly and we would not hesitate to go again. I booked to stay at this hotel several months ago for mine and my husband's anniversary. We were to spend one night there on sat 1/12/2012 and then go on to Whitby. I had a KGB voucher deal. I have today received a telephone call from the hotel to tell me that unfortunately they can't honour our stay and have double booked. It seems to me that they have double booked with someone paying full price, who they would prefer to stay and not us on a KGB deal. They then suggested we stay on the friday night, not a chance we have planned our week away around the one night there. I ask why they have not rung the people who have booked the room to cancel their booking??? I am disgusted and upset. Clearly they do not want our custom. I have put this review on as a warning to anyone else who intends to stay at this hotel. It is not good enough service. The response I got is that things go wrong. Not even very apologetic.

Stayed for 1 night on KGB deal which proved excellent Value. Room large and bed really comfy. Had continental breakfast as still full from the meal in the hotel on the night before - absolutely fantastic quality and a real credit to the chef. All staff encountered were really friendly however particular mention to Luke and Billy who were very helpful during our stay in 'goggling' things for us and helping us. Yes the hotel is a little 'dated' in places but this adds to the character and didnt detract from a lovely stay. Well recommended.

Just back for a nice break in this hotel. First impressions, I wasn't going to even bring my case out of the car however Im glad I did, The hotel itself is in need on some tlc, this is saved by the lovely staff and the fab chef, The food we had was delicious. I didn't like the adjoining door in my room as I could hear the people next door as if they were in the same room.
The room was clean and the staff cant do enough to help.
The owners should count themselves lucky and invest more time and money into this place

A very good location, the breakfast (full English for £5.00 was very good value, the 2 evening meals we had were also very good, the only downsides were 1) Not one of the young staff were able to make a proper Irish coffee!!! despite advertising several coffees.2)The gas ran out on the Monday hence no hot water or evening meals, the gas was back on for the Tuesday breakfast but the water in the rooms was cold.3) The shower was underpowered so you could not have a decent shower!!
Due to these mishaps we were not charged for our last breakfast.
The very young staff were pleasant and helpful but very inexperienced.

Room Tip: Find one where the shower is fully functional!!!

Black mouldy bath seal, very crudely oversealed several times and still mouldy black.
Mouldy sink seal.
Stained streaked toilet.
Bedroom wall discoloured from leak above.
Wi-Fi didn't work.
Shower was a trickle of water - one minute scalding the next freezing depending on which other room turned on anything.
Booked in for 2 night deal, left after 1 night
Tired and old bathroom and bedroom.
Good luck.....
