“Local resource”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

I have lived within a mile of this excellent enclosed hide for many years without knowing it was there! It is open every day. The volunteer staff are friendly and knowledgeable and there is plenty of information about the birds and other wildlife you can see. The hide is about 50yards walk from the free car park. There are guided walks from here and other local RSPB sites. There is only a Portaloo, but it was perfectly sweet when I looked in!

“Good Spot if you enjoy Watching / Photographing Birds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

This is a small RSPB site which is free to visit and has limited facilities. However it is staffed by extremely helpful and friendly volunteers and a very helpful permanent warden who provided a very detailed reply to our e-mail re the need for Wellie Boots (not necessary) prior to our visit.

As with any such site the benefits one gets depend on the time of year and time of day and much in the way of sightings depends on a certain amount of luck in this respect. However you are bound to see a number of birds at any time.

If you enjoy spending time in the countryside and seeing birds this makes a well worthwhile visit from Southport either by walking or by No 44 bus. (We walked from the pier along Marine Drive - just over 2 miles and returned by bus) In fact, although there are good hides from which to view, because of the size and location, much can be seen by just walking down Marshside Road from the bus stop to the "Sea Front" and/or vice versa, and a walk along the path to the water's edge at high tide is rewarding.

“Great bird reserve with excellent volunteers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

Nice hide / visitor centre where we chatted to the local volunteers and then decided to walk all around the lagoons in front of this hide. Had a good couple of hours and saw waders, ducks, geese and the first merlin that we have ever seen!

“Lots of birds and spacious hides for photography”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

I liked the car park nearby. The hide we used was big enough to accomodate seven photographers with elbow room and benches behind. You can always see loads of species. During the Spring months, RSPB provide someone to help you (also making sure that the birds and their eggs are safe)
