I have had the misfortune of staying in this hotel once before and we were booked in here as the hotel we had expected to stay in was not ready. No words could have prepared my wife for how awful this hotel is. The corridors leading to the rooms were from a horror movie and the matress in the room, apart from being stained, had a plastic sheet over it. Just awful-for £140 a night and I would advise giving it a wide berth.

“Not one to recommend”

Britannia Prince of Wales-Southport

May 18, 2008

My wife looked forward to a few days break at this hotel - it proved to be a disappintment

The hotel badly needs refurbishing - it is old & tatty & needs a good clean - I doubt if the windows have been cleaned for a year

The bedroom needed decorating but the worst part was finding a "mat" under the sheet on the bed (in case we wet the bed !!!!)

Service was very poor - we waited 1/2 hour for afternoon tea in the lounge after which we gave up & went out

Meals are self service apart from soup - I even had to fetch the wine & glasses from the lounge bar for our meals (drinks are expensive)

Fire safety is not up to modern standards - the fire doors to staircase need replacing with doors complying to current standards & most of the fire signage does not comply to current legislation

You are even charged extra for using the hotels car park during your stay

Overall veiw - an old hotel which seems to mainly cater for coach parties, needs updating, staff service needs improving- not one to recommend

This was our 3rd stay here, not from choice, but as part of a large regular event. It was actually better than previos years, but still not a hotel I would choose for myself. They have actually given the place a lick of paint and the revolving entrance is slightly less unsightly. However, the dining room needs closing down completly. It definately is not up to 3 star standard. Self service buffet is more suited to 1 star Spanish hotels or motorway caffs. As a previous poster commented, the desserts were just plonked on a table already in bowls, and a dripping cream jug left there. It was rarely replenished, and by the time we got to it, there was only 2 bowls of cold, mass produced apple pie left. Tea/coffee was not served with the meal, we had to make our way to another part of the hotel, where they had set up a table in a deserted room ( seemed like a store room for extra chairs) . There was a table there with several thermos flasks for us to help ourselves. Next day at breakfast, an elderly gentleman asked for coffee, he was told to bring his own frm a table set up in the bar. He was supposed to carry it through whilst negosiating several steps or a ramp, in his wheelchair.. From previous experience, i know its not worth complaining, because the managment never respond, so really, it needs closing down, and taking over by a reputable company.

“Oldish hotel”

Britannia Prince of Wales-Southport

May 9, 2008

For the price the room we had at this hotel was a joke.
The reception area is lovely, old English, charming style.
The room we got had a view over a filthy back yard. The mattress in the bed was in bits and the furniture was old and warn. The TV had five channels.
We went down and demanded a change, mostly because the condition of the bed. We got upgraded to something called the executive suit. View and furniture better but executive? I don't think so.
On the good side is that reception staff is friendly and helpful and the breakfast is great and served in a nice big room.

I should imagine that in its heyday the Prince of Wales was the most prestigious hotel in the area. It still has a grand and elegant exterior but once through the doors and into the foyer the air of faded grandeur turns to one of neglect. The whole place is in need of serious re-furbishment but more seriously is the lack of basic standards of care - dirty, ageing and flaking paintwork, dusty curtains and carpets and beds and furniture that should long ago have seen the scrap heap. The heating system was working full pelt however but with no means of control it was necessary to sleep with the window open and endure the noise of traffic and the early arrival of the bin men! Breakfast did nothing to improve the situation - soggy toast. greasy eggs and plastic packs of jam are things of the sixties. So Britannia, get your act together and, if not a complete re-furbishment, give the place a lick of paint, new furnishings and a breakfast menu at least in tune with the times. Boarding house fare at a three star hotel is not on.
