After allowing my brother-in-law to take charge of booking our hotel in Tenby, I can't say I was excited at the prospect of staying at the Giltar after reading the reviews! However, speak as you find, we arrived on Friday afternoon the weather was quite good - it wasn't raining, the streets were quiet and we parked the car with no problems, just outside the hotel. From the outside it looked in pretty good condition. We entered the foyer to be greeted by very friendly staff, and as promised we had 3 rooms all with a sea view. Each room was different in layout. 2 had a double and a single bed in each room and 1 had a double. As we were couples, we had more than enough beds to cope with! The bathrooms were small, but nothing to worry about - all the facilities were working and we had hot and cold runing water. I was suprised to find a hairdryer in the bedroom. We had tea and coffee making facilities and a colour TV. Plenty of storage space - large wardrobe, dressing table and chest of drawers. A stool and 2 chairs were also in the room, which was great if we wanted to sit and take advantage of the beautiful view of the sea - absolutely stunning. We had radiators in each room to keep us warm and they were working perfectly - in fact at one stage we had to open the window it was so warm. (Rooms 307, 308 and 309).
We checked out the lounge area, which was very cosy with a lovely open fire place and plenty of comfortable sofas and chairs to sit on. The downstairs bar was spacious with a dance floor area. The wide screen was in operation which was great for us as we wanted to watch the rugby internationals, we sat alongside the dance floor which gave us uninterrupted views of the screen. The bar man was very accommodating and the prices were very reasonable. As the hotel had a large function that evening we were told if we wanted to go out and bring food in for lunch that would be fine, so we sent out to the local sandwich bar for some tasty baguettes. There are plenty of places nearby if you want to have dinner out too. (If you want an Indian meal book a table in advance - Saturday nights could see you waiting at least 2 hours for service - I speak from experience!)
Breakfast was beautifully laid out in the dining room (didn't much like the "pipes of pan" music though! ) Plenty of choice for breakfast - fruit juices, cereals, toast, jams and marmalades. Full cooked breakfasts of all variations including kippers, served by very friendly staff, who could not have done more for us. We were very happy with our cooked breakfasts.
All in all I'd say we had a very happy weekend, spent in a clean and friendly hotel, served by staff wanting to make our stay a pleasant one. We will definitely return. For what we paid we cannot complain at all. I wonder if some people expect too much from a two star hotel. We were definitely pleasantly surprised.
One thing I should recommend though - ear plugs - for those noisy neighbours who snore - Sue and Gary it's over to you!
