Stayed at hotel overnight after appearing at Ilfracome Rotary Club Charity Concert.

Positives:-
Evening meal amd breakfast was very good. Waitresses / Bar staff (evening) friendly and very helpful.

Negatives:-
Complaints from group of poor room cleanliness, some very small "double rooms".
Bar prices extortionate.
Night Porter attitude.
Shower water "scolding".
Towels -very worn and thin.
Will not be using hotel if we are invited back to perform at the Holy Trinity Church by Ilfracombe Rotay Club in 2013.

Had a wonderful time again. Been to this hotel six times now over the last eight years and have always had a marvelousl time at this family run hotel. The food was fabulous. We had lovely rooms there also. The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough to help. Entertainment was alright - needs a bit updating though. Looking forward to going again soon.

Room Tip: It would be a big help (as there are a lot of elderly/limited mobility residents at the hotel if the...

I stayed at this hotel with my partner as a groupon deal.
Check in - staff friendly but only parking for 6 cars ( as seems to cater for elderly coach parties) so we had to find a side street to park in.
Bedroom - A maze of stairs to get to the room, comfortable bed used blanket and sheets instead of duvet, hair in the bath and sink, walls so thin you could hear the tv and people going to the toilet in the next room, cups for tea and coffee were dirty. The tv picture was of poor reception and was very small.
Food - breakfast was nice and the evening meal was ok for the price, the waiting staff were outstanding and very professional. The drinks were reasonable priced.
General hotel - cleaniness in public areas was fine, the hotel is dated but the staff were polite.

An excellent hotel if your retired as the hotel was extremely dated and reminded me of a residential home. When we arrived we had to wait for the barman to finish serving drinks before we could check in as the young man at reception told us he was unable to do this.

All the staff were very polite and friendly but the home was in need of some TLC. Our room (Superior???) smelled damp and the beds looked like someone had already slept in them, sheets very crumpled. They were also extremely uncomfortable and bedding consisted of a sheet and heavy blanket (no quilt). The bathroom was spacious but the extractor fan was loud and took a while to shut off after the light was switched off. The television was very small and had limited channels.

There was a tray of tea, coffee etc but the kettle had not been emptied of water so we had to rinse it out before use.

Going down for breakfast the following morning we were allocated a table away from the main dining area up a flight of stairs to a small room that had a few tables and some very tired chairs. There was already an uncovered jug of milk on the table that had 'bits' in it (possibly dust particles). Full English breakfast consisted of half a slice of deep fried bread, 1 egg, 1 sausage,1 bacon, 1 tomato (tinned), some fried new potatoes and a rack of toast. Marmalade and butter were in dishes on the table.

We had booked a 2 night stay but needless to say we decided to cut short our break and set off for home at 8:30 am after breakfast. Our Groupon voucher stated the deal included a bottle of wine on arrival but we never received one. You may ask the question 'why didn't you ask for it', well we did consider this but having already made our judgement of the hotel we opted to pass on that offer.

Room Tip: Not sure what to advise really but keep your windows closed as the seagulls are extremely loud at 5...

just returned having taken a 2 day groupon deal. Yes the hotel was a little dated but was good value for the money. close to the sea and shops. Room was a good size with everything we needed. room cleaned and tidied and tea coffee stocks replenished along with more clean towels. Good shower and central heating in the morning and evening. Breakfast was awesome and the waitress was fantastic as were all the other staff we encountered. Very friendly polite and helpful. Entertainment was geared to the older generation which the majority of guests were. If your expecting the Ritz then go pay their prices. If you want good value, comfort and a great breakfast to set u up for the day and use this as a base to return to to sleep after exploring then it tickes all the boxes. Thanx for a great break.

Room Tip: ask for a shower and a room by the fire exit which gives you your own key and exit in and out withou...

Just returned from a 2 night break at the Grov whilst attending a friend's wedding at The Tunnels.

The hotel has no real parking (much like others nearby), there is however lots of parking a short walk away down one of the residential streets by the Lidl's.

The owner was friendly and the feel of the place felt overall as very welcoming. We were in 246 which we couldn't really find using their rather odd numbering system and the hallways were pretty tight if you had lots of luggage. The decor in the rooms and main entertainment and breakfast areas was really dated. A strange mix of yellow and green that just looks really old and 70's-ish.

The rooms were fine although the window was open when we arrived (it was proper cold outside) and the heating wasn't on (prob operated centrally downstairs). So we were really cold in the night and the rather clinical extra blankets weren't very good. The lampshades were ripped but other than that the bedroom was fine.

We made sure having read some of the reviews that we had a shower in the room as 30% of the rooms only come with a bath! Very odd in this day and age and not great. Some of our friend's forgot to do this so we had a steady stream of guests using our bathroom. They didn't give any complimentary tolietries and the shower was a little weak also.

We didn't eat in the hotel as we arrived after 7 but I did have a quick pint there. To be honest it is not a classy enough or entertaining enough bar area to charge £5.80 for a pint of local cider and half a diet coke, come on guys, budget hotel = fair price for a round, surely. We had breakfast there one morning and it was a cooked english fry up, not usually too critical of fry ups but the portions were pretty small and quality below par.

the 'entertainment' was about to start and we didn't want to encroach on the grannies dancing so we moved on to another bar/restaurant.

Overall if you are looking for a quick break (2 nights max) that is cheap and protects you from the rain then this isn't likely to be the worst place to stay.

Room Tip: ask for a shower!

We bought this deal from Groupon for a two night stay. It was not the best. Hotel was very dated and extremely tired. Bedroom was 1980s melamine furniture, threadbare carpets and worn curtains. The sash window was wedged with paper. The shower was mouldy and not very clean. The 'dinner deal' was disappointing. The food catered to the coach trip crowd and there were a lot of these. When we complained to Groupon they said they would be taking the hotel off of their offers but surprise surprise a few months later and it is back. I hope you have a better experience than we did!
