“Wonderfull 4 x days in the Arlington”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

We had four great nights and days in Ilfracome and really enjoyed the Arlington, the staff were very welcoming and friendly, Their full english breakfast is to die for, keeps you going all day Our room over looking the bay was nice and warm, clean and very relaxing, also a great big bathroom with as much hot water as you need and fresh clean towels every day, It is very close to the front and also the town centre, The harbour area is the best part of town in the evening with many bars and restaurants to chose from.

I can't argue that this hotel is in a great location, and that it 'could' be a really good hotel - but it would need a huge investment to bring it up to scratch, as it falls well short of what you'd expect from even the most basic B&B. It looks as though it's not had anything done to it for 40 years or more. In fact a bit like Ilfracombe itself, both have great potential but need a lot of tidying up.
It's probably the fault of all of us that go abroad for our major holidays then expect the same standard when we go for a 2 day break out of season at the British seaside. They just can't make enough money to keep the standard up. Sad really!

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a sea view room, otherwise you're wasting you're money!

If you are looking for a good value bed and breakfast with great views over the sea and a good central location this is the hotel for you. If you are looking for luxury and frills don’t bother. But with a little bit of TLC this hotel could rival any in the area. (The outside could do with a good paint, and the interior could do with a bit of a freshen up) As it was a birthday treat for my sister, myself and our partners I paid the extra for the sea view which was well worth it.

My sister has mobility issues so it was great that their room was just by the lift. Had a bit of an issue with my room as I think it used to be a double room that had been turned to a triple. I had a bit of trouble getting in, out and sitting up in bed without hitting my head on the wall light which had obviously been placed in the right position when it was a double room. I sort of had to do a head limbo so a) I didn’t hit my head and b) I didn’t break the light.

There was a variety of options for breakfast with most things cooked to order not a help yourself but there was the addition of cereals and fruit juice.

Room Tip: If its not included in the price its worth the extra for the view.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Arlington hotel & although the weather wasn't nice enough to use the outdoor pool, it was nice to have as an added extra! We were pleasantly surprised as although we hadn't requested a sea view room, we were on the top floor with the most amazing view of Rapparee beach and Capstone. It was wonderful to wake up & gaze out onto a lovely sea view right from your bed!
Of course the hotel is a bit dated but I think it adds to its character & old fashioned charm of staying in a seaside town! It was one of the cheapest hotels we found to stay but the fact that it's got plenty of free hotel car parking, is invaluable on the sea front. The rooms were clean, with TV & ensuite facilities. We went room only, but there is a great cafe just down on the corner which made awesome cooked breakfasts! If you want somewhere cheap & cheerful but in a great central seaside location, then the Arlington is for you!

We had a family room for a week which also allowed our 2 dogs to stay, absolutely brilliant sea view, nice good sized room with all that's needed for a good old fashioned family holiday. We have paid a lot more for a lot less and will return at some stage.

We stayed at the Arlington Hotel for five nights. I was expecting a dated hotel and worse considering the price and some of the reviews I read! The Arlington however was pleasantly surprising, yes it was dated but the room was more than adequate. We have three children and thought things may be cramped, the room however was spacious and the bathroom bigger than our own! Plenty of room to store our belongings.
Room on arrival was thoroughly clean, bed sheets etc prestine, clean towels when ever needed. Staff really friendly and helpful! Didn't mind kids, and didn't get annoyed with they fascination with the lift.
Only negative was that the cleaner entered daily and made the beds/ changed towels, but didn't change the sheets and it didn't seem to get hoovered even though there were bits everywhere from our messy kids! Oh and the lift is noisy! But wouldn't change our room as the view is amazing!!!!
Would defiantly stay again.
Ilfracombe is dated and the highest street dreadful but the tunnels, harbour and capstone is lovely. Limited selection of quality restaurants, but Ilfracombe is a great base, to visit surrounding areas from!!!!

I'm going to start on a positive. Wow, what a fantastic view from our window, but the rest was just well, hmmmm, yes. The staff were attentive and polite. The hotel needs to be pulled down and rebuilt to bring it back to life and not something stuck in the 70's, with woodchip wallpaper and a floral freeze that was coming off the walls. The room was not poor but not average either but ok'ish. We didn't have the breakfast so I can't rate it. The bed was very hard and the pillows lumpy so it was just as well we only booked for a couple nights. All in all it was a cheap hotel and I can't expect a 5 star room on the small amount we paid.
