“My husband & I stayed at the Capstone for...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2010 via mobile

My husband & I stayed at the Capstone for one night, as we were going to see a show at the Landmark & didn't want to travel back to Somerset late at night.
We arrived in the late afternoon & were greeted by Minaz who was lively & showed us to our room.
Our room looked out onto the main street. It had the bedroom, dressing room & bathroom. The Capstone is obviously going through a renovation. The bedroom was nicely decorated with a good bed & flat screen tv. The wardrobe was a little tired but functional but the bathroom was pale avocado green. It was functional, but tired. Once it has been renovated i'm sure it will be lovely.
We decided to eat in the restaurant when they opened at 6pm so that we could be finished before the show started. We got to the restaurant slightly before they opened & the waitress was somewhat flustered. The menu wasn't as extensive as I'd hoped & there were no specials/fish dishes. Or at least we weren't told about any. The food we did have, steak & chips, was perfectly good, but a little pricey for the portion size. The pudding however was lovely.
Once returning to our room after the show we settled to sleep. Unfortunately, the sea gulls in Ilfracombe seem to be nocturnal & they squawked & fought all night! & as our room (& possibly the entire hotel) wasn't doubleglazed this meant a sleepless night.
Breakfast in the morning was lovely. A great range of cooked foods & some continental buffet items.
We initially chose this hotel as it was one of only a handful that offered one-night stays (most had a two-night minimum). However, this was a nice hotel in transition, which will be amazing once complete.

Thank you for your review.
I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay at The Capstone. As you state we are slowly going through the entire hotel and bringing things upto date. We felt that we should concentrate on getting the beds to be as comfortable as possible - so made this a priority, and I am pleased that you noticed this. After all a good comfortable bed far outweighs the colour of the bathroom suite.
We have a very broad fish selection on our menu, as we are licensed to buy fish straight from the boats as they come in with their hauls. However, this can sometimes mean that when the boats get in later than expected, the fish specials dont appear on the menu until we know what lovely fresh offering the fisherman have for us that evening. I think the evening you ate with us was one of those evenings where at 6pm the haul hadn't arrived and you, obviously, needed to get to the show on time.
We hope to see you soon on your next visit to Ilfracombe!

Our journey to Ilfracombe was blighted by being forced into an Exmoor hedge by a speeding lorry and subsequent two punctures. We limped to Capstone where the freindly service and welcoming food relaxed us after the traumatic journey. Capstone is ideal for the Lundy ferry, where we were headed, and they arranged for the car to be fixed whilst we were away. Good breakfast was served early as well. Thanks Capstone for your help.

Thank you for your review.
It was a pleasure to ensure that you enjoyed your trip to Lundy Island, as the issues with your car could have made it stressful. We were more than happy to ensure that your car was fixed and waiting for you when you got back - it's all a part of the service at The Capstone!

We arrived on Saturday afternoon and were immediately greeted by the owners. The rooms are up a lot of steps but this was clearly advertised. The owner however carried our bags.
The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. The location of the Hotel is very close to the Harbour, shops, Promenade and the Ilfracombe Tunnels.
We were offered a comprehensive range of breakfasts in the morning. The quality of these was fantastic and I intend to visit again to try the evening meals.

Thank you for your review.
Wow, your review is so kind, but of course true :).
On a serious note, we try hard to give our guests an overall experience and I can honestly say it was a pleasure having you guys stay with us. You fully appreciated our restaurant and the lovely little quirks this old building has.
As for our location, most people appreciate our close proximity to all the attractions, and as you had young children with you - you really seemed to benefit from how close everything is to us.
We will be more than happy to welcome you again to The Capstone.

We stayed two nights at the Capstone, prior to a stay on Lundy Island. We found this little gem on a previous visit to Ilfracombe. The hotel is just off the harbour. The owners are gradually refurbishig the whole complex. The rooms are comfortable with good amenities. The food at both breakfast and dinner is superb. The owners and staff make sure that you are well looked after. A great place to stay.

As you mention our location is ideal for the harbour and the whole of the town and its amenities.
We all like to ensure that we can do whatever possible to help make our guests stay a pleasure, and our Chef is no exception. He prides himsef on delivering local produce in the evening and hearty West Country breakfasts for our guests. After all a good breakfast turns a good day into a great day!

We stayed here on our way to Lundy and on our return trip too as we found the staff so friendly and the place comfortable. The hotel has great character, our accommodation was tastefully furnished and very clean. The food was excellent too.

Our room was comfortable but the hotel promises to be spectacular when its refurb is finished. More importantly, we both found the owners to be exceptionally welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble including telling us the best places to go and cooking breakfast early for us. They even got us a card to celebrate our engagement.
