“A fantastic gourmet weekend with friends!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

For the last few years a group of us have organised an annual "gourmet" weekend. This year we chose exclusive occupation of the Cross for a weekend, both rooms and restaurant, this constituting a very good value package. We were very satisfied with our choice.

The food was consistently excellent for both the evening dinners. On the Saturday we had a tasting menu, precdeded by champagne and a range of delicious nibbles. I particularly liked the game terrine and also the ample supply of a range of tasty bread rolls. Breakfast was also excellent, in particular the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon.

The Cross is an excellent venue for a group, with a large comfortable sitting room. Our hosts were very friendly, providing tea and scones on the wet Saturday afternoon.

The Cross is very well situated for a range of outdoor activities, in particular hillwalking. Some good walks are accessible directly from the hotel, both around Kingussie and into the surrounding hills.

Evening food is beyond words...go there and enjoy it yourself..Breakfast is "sensible"...

Rooms, clean, comfortable and homely but not luxury....you are there for the grub!

One pub in the village has a couple of decent real ale taps with local beer if you need a wander..

Room Tip: Choose one on the side where the burn runs by....

We went to The Cross for dinner on Saturday evening and have visited on previous occasions and always had a great meal but the dinner we had on Saturday was unbelieveable.....I'm still thinking about it now!

The meal we had on Saturday night was SUPERB. Words can't describe the whole experience really. Whilst we were sitting choosing our food, we were given 3 fantastic pre dinner nibbles - presented beautifully and each was a taste sensation. The amount of work which must have gone into each of those mouth watering nibbles - what an experience: tiny button sized beetroot meringes with goat cheese cream; warm haddock croquettes with curry sauce; chicken liver parfait in a tiny crispy cone.

Mouth watering and beautiful and a sign of things to come....a selection of homemade bread and butter; my beautiful cep ravioli and chesnut veloute just melted in the mouth; I'd never tried Grouse before and the whole dish was STUNNING.

Desserts were beautifully presented and all I could hear from other diners around was mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

If you go for dinner to The Cross, have coffee and petit fours - all home made - I don't like cherries but you have converted me! The chocolate truffle on a stick rolled in tiny bits of dried cherries was YUM.

Actually I think your chefs could sell the chocolates and bread all year - I'd order on a regular basis!!!!

I think the Cross is an absolute gem and I feel very very lucky to live locally and be able to have dinner there from time to time. Your Chefs are STARS....look after them.

The whole experience was really fantastic and you all made our night special. A big thankyou to Katie for looking after us so well and to the whole of your team - what an experience.

On a final note, if you are wondering where to go for a really special occasion, look no further than The Cross. You will not do any better. The meal we had on Saturday was the best meal I have ever eaten. Please thank Ross Sutherland and his team for being so imaginative, creative and attentive - WE WILL BE BACK!!!

Another comfortable stay at The Cross although I do wonder what the droning noise is from some of the rooms, not to worry, slept well enough in the mega comfy beds on woodland side of building. Really enjoy the upstairs lounge and food was great, breakfast really is magnificent but watch your pre dinner bar bill as a glass of rhone and a locally bottled beer will whack you £7.00 and £5.00 respectively, ouch !

Room Tip: Room 5 certainly gets the droning noise ?

The Cross is run by extremely welcoming owners who clearly take a deep personal pride in what they do. It shows in every aspect of this hotel and we sincerely appreciate that. The place feels very 'homey' with a comfy lounge and bedroom with many personal touches. But the food! If you were in London to get this quality and creativity you would need to sell a child into slavery but here, it is very reasonably priced indeed for a truly memorable meal. Being in Scotland I had the grouse that just melted in the mouth with wonderful rich flavour and this after having just enjoyed a lobster ravioli. (My mouth is watering again as I write and recall). Top this with a perfect rasberry soufflé and all the bits (canapés, stunning chocolates with coffee) and statutory Talisker and great wines and I was is heaven. Only downside was being thrashed at dominoes by my wife afterwards but another glass of Talisker helped ease my pain.

Now, The Cross is under relatively new ownership and they are doing an amazing job with tremendous value for money. It is clear too the team in the kitchen are passionate about their work. My feeling is they will need to have a pretty good flow of custom to finance this or...the price has to go up. My motivation in writing in TripAdvisor is to help people who I think really deserve recommendation and with The Cross we really want them to develop their business and do well. It would be hard to beat, anywhere, the meal we had here.

Room Tip: ask to look over the stream (as long as you like the sound of running water)
