“A place to realx”

The Cross at Kingussie

A really nice hotel with a fabulous restaurant. Friday nights meal was one of the best we have experienced. The restaurant had a pleasant ambience with its feature fire, well spaced tables, attentive, friendly staff and serene atmosphere.
The room was fresh, comfortable and overlooked the river. It was a good size for us with all the facilites you would expect, with a few nice additions including a selection of CDs and magazines, and tea/homebaking served on request. The TV signal was poor, but as stated in other reviews TV wasnt our priority! The lounge area for coffee and drinks were full of interesting books and memorabilia which gave the place real character.
Its worth saying that if guests are staying for a weekend the menu should take account of that as we felt the second nights menu was pretty similar to the previous ie more white fish and chicken prepared in similar ways. Having said that all food, including breakfast was superb. Wine was also excellent as expected.
We will definitely return.

We couldn't fault our stay here. It is not a grand hotel with all the bells and whistles of service but rather a small, intimate restaurant with rooms and the emphasis is on the food. We were welcomed by the proprietor who made us feel right at home. Our room was clean, tidy and neat. Nothing grand but everything in good working order, spotless and comfortable. We could have ordered tea in our room or asked for a hospitality tray but didn't feel the need. The room was quiet with the only noise coming from the stream outside. Down the hall was a lounge which made a comfortable area to relax after supper and there was a wide selection of games and books for those rainy afternoons.

The food is everything you'd expect. Tasty, well cooked and imaginative and as that was the main reason for our visit we were well pleased. The wine selection was superb; extensive, varied, thoughtfully chosen and not ridiculously priced, it's been chosen by taste rather than for the label. Breakfast was as good as I've had in Scotland.

Service was attentive but not intrusive and one got the feeling that nothing was too much trouble, that you just had to ask.

We will be returning soon.

Having stayed here in July '04 my wife and I were looking forward to our return visit. We were extremely disapointed. A warm welcome, but no tea and biscuits as before.
At £150 for two people for one night the room was a complete let down and was way overpriced, particularly as we had used another restaurant with rooms the night before for half this price, but with easily twice the space. There were problems of minor value in the bathroom, shower screen did not slide properly and the cold water tap had a minor leak.
The food was very good, but this did not make up for our disappoint ment.
Finally the decor looks tired and we felt that it needed a rmakeover.

The Cross is a 3 AA rosette restaurant set on the steep banks of a rushing highland torrent. Inside it is warm, friendly and is a destination restaurant in the area. The rooms are basic, with a small tv and sloping ceilings but people come here for the food. The restaurant is more like someone's dining room, with pastel colours and ash coloured tables. The menu is a bit limited, offering just a choice of three mains, but this is deliberate so that the husband and wife team can maintain their high culinary standards.(He used to be an hotel inspector) The service was attentive - a little bit too much for my liking, yet also friendly. The over attentiveness - insisting on pouring the wine, checking we're ok at least once per course - was more formal than the surroundings, and began to grate after a while.
Overall however, this was pretty good food for anywhere, and excellent for northern Scotland, which remains a culinary desert awash with haggis stuffed chickens in whisky cream sauce.

The Cross is definitely a restaurant with rooms rather than an hotel with a restaurant. The welcome, friendliness and courtesy of the owners and staff was superb as was the quality of the food and the wine. The dining room is decorated in an unpretentious manner. The food was excellent and the quality of the raw materials outstanding. The wine list was extensive.

The room was very clean if a little basic (we had one of the cheaper rooms at the back of the building looking out onto nondescript scrubland). The furnishings were Ikea (and looked it). The bathroom was quite dark and cramped.

Dinner was excellent and the service faultless. Breakfast equally so - the substitution of chanterelles for the usually tasteless mushrooms served in hotels a delightful surprise.

This is not somewhere one could stay comfortably for more than a couple of nights. The room was too cramped and claustrophobic for a comfortable extended stay.

One night's stay cost us just short of £300. The meal was good value for money. The accommodation less so.
