“Kinloch House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

We have just returned from a most enjoyable stay at Kinloch House Hotel. We received top class service from the moment we arrived. We had a well appointed spacious room facing south with views over the surrounding countryside.
The four course Dinner was excellent served by very pleasant staff as was breakfast.
The hotel is a beautifully maintained country house in a tranquill setting.
We have stayed at most of the top Country House Hotels in Scotland and this hotel is one of the best.

We are still shocked this hotel is associated with relais and chateau. It is no way a 5 star hotel. We paid for a superior upgraded room and it lacked creature comforts and niceties and there are no activities organized or made accessible. The bathroom is carpeted right up to the toilet and the shabby bath with broken wood framing (no shower)- didnt feel to clean. The dinner was good but again many missing qualities of 5 stars...the special bottle of wine we ordered was not brought to us for previewing- just supposedly showed up in a carafe. Wifi not working, blow dryer has no plugs near a mirror, TV in corner and cant view from any bed or chair- have to be standing mid room, bed mushy and uneven, no fitness center or spa or even 1 facilitated experience...a bunch of little things that add up to lack of 5 star comfort of caring for guests. Those are little things, the one big thing is the very poor take-it-or-leave-it attitudes of the staff and manager. We came to work and needed wifi in our room so after a night and morning of calls to try to resolve had to check out to get it (btw, after we notified them of our need for wifi and they did not resolve or even try to accomodate we made a noncancellable reservation elsewhere only to be met at check out from them with an offer to move to a lower room near some construction (a little too little and a little too late) topped off with a bad attitude and a cancellation fee they would not waive (fighting that with credit card company)). This is a 3 star experience at 5 star prices. You can do better elsewhere...we escaped after 1 night to nearby Gleneagles.

We spent three nights on a value deal at this very pleasant and attractive hotel but did not find the hotel worth the 5 star rating.

The ambience was at best strained especially in the dining room where we ate on our first night. The service was attentive but impersonal. The waitresses did not speak apart from taking our order. There were only 6 people in the hotel dining room which meant that all guests talked in hushed tones - hardly relaxing.

The reception rooms were comfortable and the bedroom was large and spotlessly clean. We did expect a 5 star hotel to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Although you could order tea in the lounge (expensiver at £13 for two) it took away the flexibility of having a hot drink when you choose without having the palava of ordering it. This seems to be a common complaint which has not been addressed, suggesting a certain arrogance that the hotel is run to suit the owners' needs rather than the needs of the paying customer.

The hotel seemed to be geared for foreign tourists especially Americans. We certainly felt that being on a value deal we were somewhat inivisible to the staff. Having stayed in really welcoming friendly country house hotels in the Lake District, this hotel did not in our view, offer a particularly personal or friendly service.

Room Tip: If on a value deal you will probably be put downstairs.

Just a one night stay but decided to pay a little more for a suite. A comfortable and pleasantly decorated room, with the emphasis not on an oversized television. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it would simply have seemed out of kilter with this particular house. The focus here is clearly enjoyment of the grounds and surroundings, and relaxation with a nice glass of something or other.

The dinner was particularly good with entirely unobtrusive staff.

The general atmosphere was relaxed and not stuffy - which is important. This is neither a boarding house with rules and regulations, nor an all systems go entertainment and wedding bonanza.

Just a good getaway.

My husband and I spent our 2nd wedding anniversary here, and as always, Kinloch House was a delight. This was our 4th or 5th visit, and although we do try other places we find that they never quite measure up to KH and it is a relief and a pleasure to come back here. There is an understated, quiet elegance yet homeliness about the place. Staff are welcoming and friendly but never intrusive, and the bedrooms and public rooms are comfortable and luxurious without being ostentatious or stiff. The food was great as always. We always wish we could stay longer.

It was a great night away. Clean tidy rooms, Staff were really friendly. Food was fantastic but the selection was not that big but a good mix. We did a deal with travelzoo and we were treated fantastically. Would recommend to friends and family.. one down side was no tea and coffee facilities in the room but didn't bother us that much

My wife and I spent two nights at this very special property that is in a beautiful pastoral setting. We had a superior king room in the main building that was spacious, well appointed and clean. We booked through Relais and Chateau with no problems or surprises. The public rooms were well decorated and inviting and because there are several of them, all the guests were able to find a comfortable and inviting spot to read, relax or socialize. The breakfasts and dinners were really superb with thoughtful choices and professional staff. The wine menu is good, but we brought a special bottle for one night that required a 30 pound corkage fee that struck me as a bit much. If you enjoy fine accomodations, food and drink and serenity in this gorgeous part of Scotland and are willing to pay the price, you will probably like the Kinloch House.

The part of the experience we did not like was on the second evening which involved a fellow in the dining room who chose to wear jeans and a partially buttoned shirt that looked like his boyhood night shirt. All of the other men had coats or coats and ties and the women were well drssed. I was later told by the manager that dress codes have fallen to the wayside, at least at the Kinloch House, even though their written policy prohibits jeans in the dining room. I know I am old school on this, but I believe that in fine establishments there should be dress codes that are enforced.

Room Tip: The Clunie Room was exquisite. We could hear our upstairs neighbor walking, but it was not loud or...
