“Not perfect, but a generally excellent stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2014

First impressions of the Wight Montrene were generally very good indeed; I arrived very late (past check-in time) and was still warmly greeted, as well as being given a free upgrade from a single to a double, which was appreciated.

The room itself was quite basic, but very clean and well-presented. I read other reviews on this website about small bathrooms and thought little of it, but mine was very small indeed, to the point of being almost unusable; it is more of a "lean-to", with a shower, small sink and lavatory, which, when you sit down, gives you little or no room to manoeuvre - I would say that I am larger than average size so this wouldn't be too much of a problem for some. There were good amenities in the room with a strong attention to detail, such as the small jar full of teabags.

Breakfast was of excellent quality and very, very quick to be served. There is a strong choice of options, including which size of breakfast you would like, including the "Jurassic" option, which is very generous and gives you the option to have even more. The sausages were some of the best I have ever tasted, the bacon was thick and tasted of quality, the eggs were perfect and the beans were also a cut above the average. The coffee was also very good indeed.

The hotel as a whole is very quiet, serene and comfortable - the members of staff were always very polite, friendly and welcoming; you felt like nothing was too much trouble and that was appreciated. The bar staff and even the workmen were also quick to say hello, good morning and good evening - this kind of quality of service is quite rare and adds a lot to the ambience of the hotel.

The pool and other gamesroom areas were well-kept and were very popular. The bar area was also well-presented and had a piano player, which gave it an upmarket feel. I didn't take advantage of it and I wish I had on reflection. Sandown itself is quite run-down but has a lot of character, and maintains a lot of independent shops catering for the more mature tourist - it wouldn't be for everyone but it has strong and frequent bus links to travel to most of the island, as well as some good, friendly, pubs.

Overall, an excellent stay at a good price, with a small handful of niggles. There was a bathroom along the hall and downstairs so it didn't feel too much of a problem to have a small bathroom. It could do with some updating in certain areas and the 10.00am checkout time seems quite harsh in an era where people stay up later and sleep in longer, particulary if they have been drinking the night before; I have known people to change their mind on hotels, purely so they can have another half hour/hour in bed so
I think this could be revised, or have an option put in place where people can check-out later, even with an additional charge (I would certainly pay it).

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. The niggles as described certainly didn't have an adverse affect on my stay and I wouldn't hesitate to stay again - the owners have a strong, common sense approach with a lot of attention paid to the finer points and they deserve a lot of credit for running a very good hotel.

I would like to start by saying that I would always recommend this beautiful hotel to anybody that was looking for somewhere to stay.

My husband and I had our wedding reception here in December 2013, all the staff were fantastic, Helpful, polite and a pleasure to talk to. The owner, John, couldn't of been more helpful, he honestly took the stress away from planning a wedding party! Friends and family stayed at the hotel that night and all commented on how great it was, the food was gorgeous and the price of it all was great! Would use over and over.

Stuck in the past!!!

Rooms out dated, headboard was a bit of work top stuck to the wall, central heating pipes banging and clanging all night.

Breakfast not served to 0815.

Not a pleasant experience to say the least.

Very strange. We cannot find anyone from Poole that could have written this review. We are so sure that nobody from Poole has stayed with us this year and left dissatisfied that if the person contacts us and identifies him or herself then we will refund the hotel charge.
Meanwhile we will leave it to readers' common sense as to quite how this person can be so far out of step with normal expectations that he/she is only the 10th person out of 439 reviews to see fit to "award" us with with a "Terrible" whilst 297 have said Excellent, 94 said Very Good, only 25 even just an Average and even fewer (13) a lowly Poor!

very impressed with this hotel, staff very friendly and attentive. Bedroom was very comfortable and warm. The swimming pool, jacuzzi etc. are excellent. Sadly we could only spend one night there, had a great breakfast in the morning, will be returning for sure.

This hotel is a gem; fantastic value for money, friendly and helpful staff, spotlessly clean, comfy bed with duvet. We had an online winter break deal that included ferry crossing, breakfast and dinner and look forward to returning when the weather's warmer!

My husband and I plus my nieces and nephews stayed here for a couple of nights off season. The hotel was super friendly, very clean and comfy. The food was amazing, full five courses that even impressed my very fussy brother who also stayed! The bed was comfy (yet a previous client same room said it was awful and gave one star! Why?) Nothing was to much trouble for the staff who were all a delight, especially the waitress and bar man. This hotel deserves to be much more than a 2 star! The pool, Jacuzzi etc was also very good, clean & warm. You really must try this place! And the best bit, value, we chose the winter warmer and the prices included the ferry, breakfast and free dinner, I don't know how they do it for such a great price. I will be back!

I decided to have a few days away, just me and the dog! And found the Wight Montrene offering a great Winter Warmer deal which included ferry crossing, breakfast and free 5 course evening meals! Great location, couple minutes walk to Sandown beach - handy for the dog (out of season). Great selection of food for breakfast and dinner. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. There was entertainment on two of the nights I stayed, including a Jazz&Blues night which was fab, very 'go-with-the-the-flow" with some of the regulars bringing their trumpets or giving us a tinkle of the ivories; because I enjoy abit of singing I was also able to get up and sing a song too, everyone was very friendly and tried to involve everyone in the evening! Great time!
