“Excellent value - perfect location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

Just returned from a great stay in this hotel. First things first.....this is a two star hotel so don't expect five stars and then you won't be disappointed. The bedroom was adequate. Nothing to rave or complain about, although the stairs up to it were a bit of a trial with a heavy suitcase. And that's really an end of the "cons" . The "pros" are the location, the breakfast, the staff , the facilities and the entertainment. You are a short walk away from the High Street, the beach and several sea front eating establishments and when i say short I mean 5 minutes. You are about a 15 minute walk to the Pier in one direction and the Zoo in the other. You can even have a long stroll into Shanklin along the seafront if the mood takes you.. couple of miles probably.. The beaches locally are excellent too. Lots of sand and not lots of people. The Breakfast is perfect.. have as little or as much as you want basically. Their "Full Monty" is a typical Full English and the "Jurassic" is pretty much two "Full Montys" ... I wish I'd tried one but the Monty was enough. We didn't eat in the evenings at the hotel but it seemed busy every night which I took as a good sign. The staff were perfect in every way, thats all that needs saying really. The facilities on site included a swimming pool, a jacuzzi, sauna , a mini gym, snooker table, table tennis and a nice seating area for families. The entertainment in the bar was most enjoyable most nights featuring a pianist or organ player. But on other nights there were disco and keyboard nights and Thursday was a jazz/blues night featuring the pianists plus some other friends, bass, drum, sax and vocals. Really quite excellent .

Room Tip: Our room (B2) was on the first floor at the back and reached by a tight little staircase which was j...

This hotel is worth more than its 2 star rating!!! The staff are all so friendly and helpful, our waitress was lovely, Hayley (our receptionist on arrival) was more than helpful and Mike from the bar was lovely and a real life "Mr Benn"!!!!
The hotel was spotless & well presented. The pool & steam room were ideal as they don't close during the day. The food was out of this world (good luck if you can eat all courses at dinner!) and the location was perfect..... The beach, Sandown centre & Sandown Pier a few minutes walk away! The beach is sandy and
plenty of sunbeds to hire.
We will definitely return to this
hotel, it's worth every penny!!!

once again I had a wonderful holiday at the montrene hotel very clean very very friendly servicing of rooms perfect the only problems I can report are for returning patrons is that the dinner menu has not changed for three years and it requires a head waiter as at most meals the tables had not been completely set and you had to ask for utensils but apart from that I would return again as the location and peacefulness is perfect

We are delighted that Alanjohn S and friends once again enjoyed their stay with us and would apologise if occasionally an item of table-wear had to be requested. This has been taken up with Tami our Head-Waitress and hopefully the problem will not be on-going.
In respect of our menus we do make changes each year (about 10%) but are ever mindful that many of our clients return time after time BECAUSE they broadly know what will be on our 5 course Dinner Menus. Basically we feature all the roasts plus chicken, lamb shanks, duck, salmon, pies and puddings etc. and frankly rather doubt that many clients, even those that come more than once a year, are too dismayed to find that only minor menu changes have occurred since their last visit.
We are however always open to suggestion, so if Alanjohn S - or for that matter any other client (as our menus are shown on our website) - has any suggestions as to what replacements should be made (and what items should be dropped to make room for same) then any such thoughts would be greatly valued and appreciated.

We have just returned again to this gem of a hotel and as usual we had a wonderful holiday. This time we stayed for 5 days and loved every minute. With three small children its such a perfect location that it draws us back again and again. The food is still lovely - breakfast is exceptional and being a dinner guest is definitely worth every penny - quality traditional english meals such as lamb shank, roasts, chicken and ham pie, salmon fillets - the menu changes daily and always has a great choice. The childrens menu is full of child friendly options if they dont fancy the adult choices and the service is super speedy and the staff very friendly. The restaurant is clean and bright and compared to eating outside of the hotel we found that we actually spent less by eating in - after busy days it was so much easier than having to find a dinner location elsewhere. The room we had was perfect for a family and the children loved the bunk bed. All the thoughtful touches such as room fans, kettle and hot drinks, tv with built in dvd made it even better. Apart from the wonderful staff we always meet some lovely guests when we visit and the atmosphere makes it easy to get to know fellow guests if you wish or keep yourself to yourself. The fact that this hotel is so near to the beach and has a convenience store opposite makes it an ideal location. The car park is a real bonus and makes life with pushchairs much easier. The hotel also has a mixed clientele from babies to 90 year olds and so it has a lovely family feel. The pool was so warm and clean and we spent many a happy hour in there buidling up an appetite for dinner. The steam room and jacuzzi are also a lovely extra. Finally I must say that the addition of the Oasis spa was an amazing treat. My husband had a massage (brilliant) and I had a manicure (beautifully professional and very inexpensive). Even my little girl had her nails painted ! The setting was calm and relaxing and Liz our therapist was fantastic - I am definitely going to be booking some of their unique treatments next time I go. So thanks again for a brilliant holiday - my only complaint is the tightness of my waistband now I have come home.

Room Tip: For families, the family rooms are brilliant

I booked this hotel on it's reviews and we weren't disappointed. The hotel is situated off the road, the drive being opporsite a small supermarket. There is a large car park. The staff are friendly and helpful. And it's really clean. Our room B2 was basic but big enough, the bed is very comfortable. It's really warm up there but at night it's really quite and we were able to leave the window open. We took the dog at no extra charge and they booked the ferry for us. There isn't a fridge in the room so if your dog eats meat like ours you will have to buy it every day. I cycled around the Island one day and managed to get back in time to have a massage which is in house.
The breakfasts aren't self service but there is plenty of choice and you can have what ever you want. There is a well stocked bar and entertainment in the evening. And only a few minutes walk from the beach. We will return next year (weather depending).

Room Tip: Somebody suggested staying in rooms B1 or B2. Be warned, there is a narrow flight of stairs to tackl...

We have just returned from our fourth stay at this Hotel and once again found the staff friendly and helpful. The hotel is very clean and the food was excellent although the menu is extensive if there is nothing that you like they will make you something different. We took advantage of the swimming pool, the snooker room and the pool table. We had our dog with us, for which there was no charge(most unusual). I definitely recommend this hotel.
