got a 3 night groupon deal b&b which was good value and we always wanted to explore Northumberland, the hotel is nice and clean and the room was very nice also, what we didn't realise was we were directly over the night club which opened till 2am whist the one across the street opened till 3am, needless to say we didn't get any sleep the first night. We asked if we could change rooms and the staff could not have been more helpful and put us in a much larger room at the back of the hotel.
I have nothing but praise for the staff on reception and the quality of the rooms however 2 things let the hotel down, the restaurant and the bar. At breakfast it was a buffet and you could order a cooked breakfast however you had to make your own toast which took forever in one of those conveyor toasters, trying to co-ordinate the toast to arrive at the same time as the food was impossible, either the toast was ready first then was cold when breakfast arrived or the toast wasn't ready whilst the breakfast went cold. When the breakfast arrived the bacon and the sausage were pink, it looked like they had been warmed through in a bain-marie and cooked in their own steam, the fat on the bacon was still white so the next day I asked for well done and it was overcooked, the sausage was still inedible and didn't taste like high meat content so next day I asked for 2 poached eggs, one was perfect the other was clearly not fresh and the yolk and the white were completely separate on the plate I cannot believe the chef allowed this to go out or that the waitress served it to me, I sent it back and got no apology or even asked why. My final gripe was that the only coffee available was Nescafe instant which I dislike, they even have a proper coffee machine but apparently don't use it at breakfast only in the evening, anyway onto the pub in the hotel, we couldn't understand why all the bars across the street where packed whilst we were the only 2 people in the bar, we soon found out why.
They don't sell any ale just John Smiths draught, they don't sell any Irish whisky and they only sell 2 wines, a medium red and a medium white so don't ask for a Malbec or a Tempranillo or a dry white, across the street the bars had 30-40 people sitting outside have a drink I would have thought it have occurred to the owners why that was. The only saving grace for the bar was that it sold much the same food as the restaurant (from the same kitchen) but about 40% less, but having had such a bad experience at breakfast we decided to give it a miss.
My opinion is that the hotel caters for stag and hen party's and we should have checked more thoroughly before we booked, as I said I cannot fault the accommodation and frankly for £40 a night I suppose we shouldn't complain so make your own mind up
