Owner description: The Old House of Keys in Castletown was once the centre of 19th century political life on the Island. The building is one chapter in the long and often turbulent history of Manx politics which stretches back to the 9th and 10th centuries when the Viking Kings ruled the Isle of Man. The fascinating Old House of Keys building has been restored to its former appearance of 1866 – a milestone in Manx history when the old self-elected House of Keys took its first steps along the road to modern democracy by passing the House of Keys Election Bill and becoming a popularly elected body. During your visit you’ll see how democracy developed in the Island – sometimes years ahead of England – and the effect that political decisions have had and continue to have on the Manx nation. You’ll meet the costumed secretary of this historic building before taking a seat in the finely restored debating chamber where you’ll enjoy an active debate on setting the laws of the Island.

“Great Insight”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

You may only visit by pre-arranged guided tour, so best to go to the old school and book in on arrival in Castletown, and then see the other attractions (castle, nautical museum) depending on time available. As I was the only visitor, I did not get the benefit of the group Tynwald re-enaction described in other reviews. Instead I had a fascinating discussion with the guide about how the politics of the Isle of Man works which I found most informative. Certainly not to be missed.

“Very interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

This seemed rather dull from the outside, but it was really interesting inside. Lots of museum-type stuff as well as factual historical information. There is another museum right next to it almost, so the two can be done together. You can learn a lot about the island and all free.

“Another must do”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

Unbelievably a free attraction, this unusual, fun and educational attraction is not to be missed. You learn more about the history of the island in one hour than in the rest of your trip !! I haven't laughed so much in ages. Younger children would not enjoy this visit.
